@Roger Kenworthy

Hard to say. I wasn’t old enough to critically assess Ricky at the end of his days. I’d hazard a guess at “no” if he spoke then like he does now. Too much dependence on gut and feel. Not the reasoning, knowledge and intelligence vibe I get from Cameron Smith.

Terrible stuff Ricky.
7 losses in the exact circumstance on top of a similar number last year supports only two plausible explanations. Either Ricky has no idea what the problem is or doesn't know how to fix it.

It can't be because he doesn't have the players to fix it because he regularly leaves players unused on the bench and refuses to use sensible options from Mounties.

Ricky won’t even publicly acknowledge there is a problem.

If that’s what he truly believes, how do you solve something you won’t acknowledge exists?

Not only that, we can go back last year.

It's sad to say however I didn't bother last night, probably the first time in maybe 20 years I haven't sat down and watched.

I've totally lost interest, listening to Ricky reminds me of all the crap I listen to day in day out.

I might start fresh next season.

I think 2015 we also lost 6 games by 4 points or less.

I didn't watch it either yesterday, went to watch roller derby instead.

At half time I saw it was 16-0 and commented that we'd probably lose it 24-22...

I prefer listing them this way:

Round 1 - Winning 18-0 ten minutes in to the game, 24-6 after twenty six minutes, 24-12 at half time... Lost 28-30
Round 2 - 14-14 at half time, 28-20 at the six second minute mark, lose 28-30
Round 3 - Winning 12-0 ten minutes in to the game, 13-6 at half time, 19-6 at the 48 minute mark, lose 19-20
Round 4 - Score the first try in under five minutes, make an error immediately in the next set, basically don't see the ball again, half time 6-26, score quick back to back tries to look like a comeback, immediately make an error again, give up, lose 16-32.
Round 7 - Didn't even try... NFI what happened here...
Round 10 - Score the first try, follow up it up with a terrible kick and defence to let them strike back right away, get in a quick couple to be up 16-8 at half time. As per usual useless after the break, lose 16-24.
Round 11 - First try again, go into the half at 10-10, nap time as of the sixty minute mark, lose 18-25.
Round 14 - Half time 8-8, make it all the way to the sixty second minute before nap time, lose 22-23
Round 16 - Half time 18-0, but it was off the back of their mistakes more than our efforts, still a good half, then utter disaster in the second lose 22-26.

Another way:
Overall First Halves = +49
Overall Second Halves = -17 (The Tigers game is really the only reason this is so low)
Just Losses First Halves = +13
Just Losses Second Halves = -74 <<<<<<<<<<<<We have been outscored in our second halve losses by 74 points over 15 games....

We have only had three games where we won both halves (Rounds 5,6,8) and lost both once (Round 7)

Games where a player has seen less than 30 minutes game time:
Round 1, Loss - Lui 23m.
Round 2, Loss - BJ 23m*, Gubb 22m.
Round 3, Loss - Havili 27m, Knight 11m.
Round 4, Loss - Boyd 29m, Bateman 29m, Lui 16m.
Round 5, Win - Hingano 2m.
Round 6, Win - Hingano 10m, Lui 19m.
Round 7, Loss - None.
Round 8, Win - Hingano 22m.
Round 9, Win - None.
Round 10, Loss - Austin 29m*, Gubb 24m.
Round 11, Loss - Gubb 20m, Lui 20m.
Round 12, Win - Hingano 0m, Gubb 12m, Knight 25m.
Round 14, Loss - BJ 1m*, Hingano 22m, Gubb 27m.
Round 15, Win - Knight 15m.
Round 16, Loss - Paulo 29m, Knight 0m.

There seems to be a common theme here of "throwing it away".

Well it's not through lack of ability we know that.

It's not mental, Ricky keeps reminding us of that.

Ricky feels for the players, especially when they are in the sheds hurting. So it's not them.

It can't be the coach. He's got two more years to run so they can't hold him responsible.

The only other common theme here is a lack of responsibility and/or accountability for one's actions and role in this mess.

Over to you Mr CEO.

Canberra Raiders board remain happy with Ricky Stuart as Coach and his direction he is taking the club.

The lurker has reported that the Camberra Raiders hierarchy remain happy with Ricky Stuart and seams there will be no change moving forward.

McFadden is definitely returning to Canberra (not necessarily to work at the Raiders) but you would think he would be at long odds to replace or work under Stuart, but it is interesting that he would move back to Canberra without having a job lined up.
The Warriors on Thursday confirmed McFadden is to leave Mt Smart at the end of the season to take his wife and three young children back to Canberra

This is all pretty cute.

I get the Stuart hate - it's an easy target.

He's only recruited a few decent players in a few years, and hasn't got the halves firing as we expect...but he also isn't the guy that's had the team capitulate each week. There has to be some onus on players. There's a reason why guys like Thurston and Smith earn millions, and guys like Austin don't get offered a contract by a club like Canberra. It's because of their ability to play to a plan and to close games.

Our halves are the biggest waste of time I've seen in many years. Sezer couldn't finish his lunch, let alone a game of football. I've defended Austin for a long time but when the commentators are baiting him and telling the Bronco's where to run - then his days in green are done.

The only issue I have with Stuart is he continues to persist with Austin and that under his guidance, Sezer somehow and inexplicably got offered a two year contract.

If a new coach did nothing but make some decent choices with playing ranks - then move Stuart on.
Otherwise, get some players he can do something with.

We can't persist with doing neither of the above.

Of all the terrible (much worse on paper than ours) teams I’ve seen play, none have consistently looked like they would win a game easily and then lose as much as the raiders in 2015/17/18.
It’s mental fragility that needs to be addressed off field.

Pigman wrote: July 1, 2018, 8:08 am Yeah I think any arguements over which era has been worse is asinine

Furner’a teams were generally poor and played accordingly. He couldn’t attract flies to ****. He didn’t really improve the squad to the level expected and results really only came with Campo was on a run

Stuart’s team is much better talent wise, because he can recruit and sell the club better, his teams generally plays tighter games but is clearly fair less prepared and alarmingly the in game management appears much worse

It’s nothing worth debating. Ultimately they’re right now 1a and 1b for worst coaches in this clubs history, so clearly the results have not been remotely close to good enough

UJL throwing serious faint and disingenuous praise by trying to compare this to the Furner era. If he feels it’s not time to sack Stuart at this point then my only conclusion is that he must be part of the board that hired him
Because no one else in their right mind could argue that this **** doesn’t need to be sacked
I'm not starting an asinine debate on which era is worse, just trying to illustrate my point that I'm not so sure things are as catastrophic as is being made out by some. When you look back on past Raiders teams and how genuinely poor they were than perhaps it shows that this current team of ours isn't actually too far off the pace. We are well in the fight in nearly every game except Souths, at this stage I'm more of the mind to keep a steady hand. We aren't winning but we aren't losing by much either as evident in our positive for and against. I think its worth showing some patience and trying to build on what we have, it might be that we are just a couple of player signings away from being a winning team. If Ricky can pick up a good replacement for Blake Austin in particular, that is critical I believe.

I'm not sure how you mean "disingenuous praise" so I'm not sure how to respond to that. I don't even disagree with you that he should be sacked as the results since 2016 are poor but just not at this point. We are close in my opinion so I'm willing to give him a chance to fix the holes in his roster. If we aren't genuine contenders next year than he has failed and his time should be up.

Lastly though what is actually asinine is your last paragraph. So I have a slightly different opinion to you so you conclude by way of joke that I must have been on the board that hired him, suggesting some sort of irrational bias towards Ricky Stuart? And that I can't be in my right mind. Please... :thumbsdown

I just cannot believe that Stuart has effectively wasted 2 whole years with a very capable roster...and absolutely nothing will be done about it.

Do you reckon he knows he is done? Like obviously, he would never publicly admit he has no idea how to fix our issues; but do you think he realises that he has simply run out of excuses? I don't see how he could go to another club and sell them any sort of vision. He has had everything on a silver platter here: Stability, time to build a squad, a healthy mix of capable rep players, exciting outside backs and young talent coming through.

And yet he has still failed. DO you think he knows the clock is ticking for him?

You'd have to assume going from a narrow semi final loss to missing the finals altogether in the space of 12 months that he'd be thinking to himself where it all went wrong when he goes to sleep at night. I'm not too concerned if Ricky knows or not if his time is running out but you'd hope the board does, you'd hope they have an eye on other options if we continue to lose. I'm not too confident about that though..

As much as I sympathise with the argument for halves closing out games, we are so poor defensively we don't deserve to be a contender.
Take the Bronco's match where we grubbered into the their ingoal and Asaako was able to make a break because we couldn't do a basic straight line kick chase defensive play.

It doesn't matter where the opposition gets the ball. They always make strong yardage against us. What is the point of having a great kicking game if the kick chase is so poor that the opposition can easily avoid a staggered line and head downfield at their leisure.

As I've said dozens of times, scoring points is not the main issue with the side. We are one of the top attacking sides in the comp (in terms of tries scored). It is defence which does not apply pressure when we don't have the ball which lets us down again and again and again. Sticky has had 5 years of failure in the Defence department. He should be off kicking chairs somewhere else.

UJL I think that’s almost worse. For three years we’ve had a team who is almost there. Ricky has not been able to identify and fix the problem. He won’t even admit there is one despite a million capitulation.

He did a great job assembling the squad and bringing fans and business support. He seems incapable of solving this problem though.

Of course the players are the ones out there and have to take responsibility but we've lost a lot of those games because of coaching decisions before or during the game. Often both. It's become painfully obvious to most fans that he's a good man off the field and he's very passionate about the club but he's just not good at coaching Rugby League at NRL level. It doesn't need an inquest, his record speaks for itself and this is yet another season that looks like a failure. I don't know how many times one club can review every aspect of why we're not winning games except for possibly the most critical one. You can have nice things like a centre of excellence in every suburb in town if you like, but if you have a bloke calling the shots that plays a small half as an impact hooker in the middle of the field or doesn't use all 17 players on game day then all the shiny weights and streamlined preseasons etc are insignificant in a competition where the margins are so small on game day.
We continue to **** about with blokes that are part of some fraternity. It's infuriating.

Simple fact is if Stick uses the bench properly, i.e. bring on some fresh legs for the last 20, we win that game.
