Josh Papalii cleans up act in bid to land Canberra Raiders contract

Canberra Raiders big man Josh Papalii has vowed to clean up his drinking and diet, after treating Samoa's World Cup campaign "as a holiday" and fearing he had jeopardised his contract negotiations with coach Ricky Stuart.

"I think my manager has spoken to [Stuart] once or twice but that was before the World Cup," Papalii said of his contract status. "Obviously I didn’t have a strong World Cup, so I think that's still up in the air. It'd be nice to get it done before the season starts, but these things can drag on."

Josh Papalii, Joey Leilua and Junior Paulo shed a combined 30 kgs

SHEDDING a whopping 30kg between them has left Canberra Raiders Junior Paulo, Joey Leilua and Josh Papalii hungrier than ever to make an immediate impact in ... The tubby trio were read the riot act by Canberra coach Ricky Stuart when they returned from the World Cup for Samoa late last season.

Would love to sort this contract out ASAP. Before round 1 would be ideal, I think it would help him keep a clear mind on the job at hand

Only sign one year deals and keep them keen. I'm sick of mediocrecy and poor results.

You generally as a rule don't get mediocrecy from Papalii. He's been our best forward for 3yrs.

I'd hate to lose him, offering him a year would be an insult.

Papalli has shown his lack of professional approach after his work cup effort, represents his country at a league world cup and gets fat...one year deal and last chance. He has had enough chances, drink driving, assault etc

Papa had a crap year. Not sure what was going on there.

But he's been our best forward for years now, and among our most consistent.

I'll tell you one thing. It's clear that last year the players had a shocking mindset. Pure arrogance based on one good season.

Papalii needs to be better than that. He's our only origin and Aust test player. He's been in the best teams with the best players under the best coaches.
He has to lead by example and show that professionalism to the rest of the team.

Playing for Samoa with Joey and Junior while gorging on pies and booze is not what you want from your elite players.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Yeah if Sia's job is to lead that group what has Papa even learnt? Imagine Sia encouraging that crap while they represent their heritage? You can clearly see he's an ultimate pro the way he conducts and maintains himself.

Papa's had a quite a few goes at growing up now. Can't criticise his performances on the park but off it- yes. And who knows what he might have been if he had a better training ethic.

If he wants the big bucks, deliver in all departments.

Papa's had a few disciplinary hiccups and some periods of questionable professionalism, but he's also been our best player for years and it's very likely his best is still yet to come (incredible he's just 25!). For a club like ours that struggles to attract and hold onto elite talent, there's no question that Josh will be in line for some serious cash in his next contract. He's earned it, and he'll get it.

Paulo and Leilua are the bigger concern here for mine. The difference between those guys' best and worst footy is enormous - as others have pointed out Josh is still a class first grader even when he's not in great nick. All that said, would love to see Papa back to his very best in 2018!

Same crappy ideology that forced the raiders to keep persisting with Carney, Dugan and Ferguson... Enough of that crap... Be a professional footballer or piss off.
I am pretty sure Bennett or Bellamy wouldn't put up with poor trainers that cant even keep in shape despite the honour of representing their country for gods sake.

Stuff how many chances he's had, It's worth giving him a contract just so we dont have to watch him destroy us while wear a Broncos jersey

Papalli is the least of our problems.

Sure he indulges in the off season but so long as he works his backside off to get in shape for the season I don't care. We all indulge on our holidays.

As for off field incidents, if we refused to sign/renew contracts for players who've done something untoward outside of footy, we'd be fielding the under 6s.... except for little johnny... he rode his pushbike without a helmet at the local park... there'll be a red line through his name forever!

Papalli is a problem, he is good, but not a game breaker, does his job sometimes, does miss tackles. Any number of people at other clubs could come in to do that job. He needs to step up for the club in my opinion....

Your opinion stinks tbh, you need to go back and watch the majority of games from the last 2 seasons to see he's been the most consistent player by the length of the straight

Josh Papalii was our best player in 2016 and one of our best forwards in 2017. No doubt.

He obviously needs to make sure he's fit. He was not fit at the end of 2017. But, fit and firing, he's a weapon.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

No offence but you are comparing Papa to fringe first graders and TLL was busted by the time he got there. Papa is a consistent rep player. He would probably be the best forward in the comp under Bellamy.

Papa understandably did drop off in 2017. I was very worried with how he came back at the start of pre-season.
Still one of our best players and you can tell he has put in this pre-season. Don't think there'll be any issues with handing him a contract. Hopefully missing out on the Australian side has him raring to go round 1. We need him playing well enough to get back in the aus side.
