Raiders player signing speculation 2018
Yeah, no reward for developing juniors under the current scheme and there’s no evidence to suggest it’ll change
Would have won Boogs - 2016, 2017, 2018

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
I disagree. The panthers are in an incredibly strong position now in large part because they have invested more in juniors. The broncos too are making this adjustment. The storm too, identified and developed all their stars. The trouble is that having a good production line of juniors is not enough if you don't have a good administration to nurture and develop them. Think para, knights and we'll us in years gone by. Investing in juniors is the right path

I'd wait for Penrith to achieve something before I got carried away.FROG wrote: ↑November 12, 2018, 5:30 am I disagree. You can't apply things other clubs do to us and hope it works the same way. We have unique challenges which far exceed anything Brisbane or Melbourne do.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
I think we do develop a lot of players and give others opportunity. Eg JC, Papa, Cotric and Rapa.
We have not been able to develop a 9, but made a great buy in Hodgo.
Our current coach has a poor history with the development of halves although he himself was a champion.
I don't think player quality is the issue. I think coaching quality, particularly defensive quality coaching, has let us down for years.

To be able to rely on juniors we have to overcome two things. The first is how to stop such a big percentage of the local ones from been career wrecking idiots, and the second is how we can retain them at the same market value as the strongest clubs.
The first one is on the club's control, but the second is not.

The NRL doesn’t have to introduce a player draft, just develop a salary cap adjustment to protect the juniors of weaker clubs from being poached by stronger clubs.
A slight tinker and see how the player market responds over a couple of seasons. The current free for all on junior development isn’t helping the code or young players in their pathway to the NRL.
I’d rather see the likes of Eels, Knights, Titans and Raiders developing players than the Broncos, Storm and Roosters stockpiling the best young talent.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
Hopefully its the Macs role to pull the 20’s halves out and model them to what they want. If they dont commit to them if they show some sort of ability then other clubs will. Lock them up early and use NSW cup for what it should be. A testing and development ground for young spine players. There are not many good halves that come from the 20’s straight to grade so use the system and smarter longer term incentive based contracts to allow them to mature

Dont believe this if you wish, but...
The most unexpected thing just happened.
I just arrived at my gym in canberra and who do I see as soon as I walk in? None other than shaun fensom!!
Pretty stoked to be brushing shoulders with him at the gym but also just wondering what this could mean about his playing future? A return to the raiders might be on the cards after all?! Or maybe just on a holiday
He is in his cowboys shorts and smashing out the cardio

As a depth only forward, id be very happy to see Fenno in lime green again.JezTez1984 wrote: ↑November 12, 2018, 12:51 pm Dont believe this if you wish, but...

Minimum wage, depth - OK.
But if it's a classic 'Raider old boy homecoming, have several hundred thousand dollars' then no thankyou.

He's worth more than minimum but he's a spot or two outside the 17.

He doesn't currently have a contract at all so anything is possible. Would he be a good bench option? From memory we dont have the strongest bench in the world.

Sutton, Guler, Lui, Murchie, Horsbough, Knight* (I think he is off contract? Might need to re-sign), L-Bateman and Havili of course.
Starting pack probably is Sia, Hodgo, Papa, J-Bateman, Tarpz, Whitey

Agree 100% . Lets not forget the big factory and stockpile at Penrith!BJ wrote:Excellent comment Edwahu.edwahu wrote:To be able to rely on juniors we have to overcome two things. Hopefully we snag one that actually kicks on for a change
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
I see now we'd actually already listed him in the SG Ball squad.

Fox suggesting we could be interested in Tommy Makinson if rapana ruled out long term. I appreciate this is likely to be baseless but what are peoples thoughts on him?

Would be a great buy. Could play Fullback or Wing so he gives you options.FROG wrote: ↑November 12, 2018, 6:15 pm Fox suggesting we could be interested in Tommy Makinson if rapana ruled out long term. I appreciate this is likely to be baseless but what are peoples thoughts on him?

I just think we are automatically linked to any English players now..
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
He was quite good (obviously) in the Test series. Good finisher. Courageous. On the small side (but not dramatcially) so gets belted occasionally but comes back for more. Puts his body where needed in defence and not shy of contact. Very good hands under a high ball.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
He hasn’t got a contract sorted but is apparently close. I still feel like it might be ESL. I did hear that he and Ricky mended some bridges though, so you never know. Don’t think he’s the type to come back to play NSW Cup again and I don’t see how he fits in our 17.JezTez1984 wrote: ↑November 12, 2018, 2:07 pm He doesn't currently have a contract at all so anything is possible. Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
Yep. Agreed. Your first point has been the most comprehensively covered topic on this forum but it’s no less true. And, to me, it all comes down to one guy: Todd Carney. Our junior development would have been considered a success if just Carney had have had the attitude of Croker. We’ve developed heaps of talent over the last fifteen years but the most important one (and a few other big ones) killed faith in the whole system.edwahu wrote: ↑November 12, 2018, 9:00 am To be able to rely on juniors we have to overcome two things. The first one is on the club's control, but the second is not.
Your second point doesn’t help either.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
Carney being a jerk and Campo's knee away from it actually coming off as a roaring success.
