Personally I’d rather the Raiders were running their own NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg teams and basing them fully in the region. They are no doubt very good rugby league people at Mounties... and I’ll support them no doubt while this arrangement runs. But I think it’d be better for Canberra rugby league to have those teams playing out of Canberra.

I was thinking about this, part of the Fuiverse. It would be expensive, but Canberra has a good opportunity to go all out Iceland style on the NRL.

Put in place junior competitions in every Canberra suburb for all age groups. Heavily discounted by CRL/QLC/Whoever

Give all coaches and kids equal access to this new Centre of Excellence being built, and give each club all the coaching tips and the blueprints required to succeed and play the “Raiders way”

Have this local competition be used as a feeder into Harold Matts/SG Ball

It would then give Canberra a constant junior pool of Canberra kids from U6’s right through the ranks, with our club being able to help and nurture them all. Like I said, it would be expensive as hell but it would be a sight to see. It would also help stamp Raiders and NRL as #1 club and code in the region

There's about 15 junior clubs in the region... would be good to see more financial and other support for them though... because AFL is certainly pouring the money into the region.

I don't think we scrapped our junior development program though. Nothing much changed in practice from what I could see except the switch to Mounties.

We provide far fewer opportunities in Under 20s and NSW Premiership than we used to. And leave it to Mounties to contract players to fill the gaps in those teams.

Not a lot has changed for Harold Matthews and SG Ball, in fact, the club has invested more in Academy teams in the region.

I thought after the club lost Milford they made a bit of noise about not being prepared to invest so much time and money on junior development? This combined with Ricky dumping Cornish without a chance; and apparent preference for buying more mature players.

That’s true, and not running a NSW Cup team or Under 20s team is consistent with that. On the other hand, there’s been more work with Academies in southern NSW and Fiji... leaving players playing there until they’re older. The Matts team seems to focus on players in the Canberra region... they bring more in from farther afield for Ball.

90% of this years current 20s squad are Canberra based players.

he was talking about glasby adding that experienced drilled workhorse then wanting to add some explosive types to the pack then used those 2 as an example

How do you "sell" contracted players if they don't want to leave?

The only reason will be the salary cap. Ricky Stuart says here that people don’t understand why we’ve lost three top players but aren’t recruiting. He basically says the reason is upgrades plus we’ve recruited Bateman and Sutton: https://www.triplem.com.au/sport/nrl/ne ... o-canberra

The club has also previously stated there are still a couple of spots to fill... but they won’t be big name recruits. I guess I’m hoping there’s some public posturing on how much space is left under the cap... because I do struggle how to reconcile how much cap I’m expecting should have been freed by the loss of Paulo, Boyd and Austin versus who they’ve gained.

And even if there isn’t cap for a TPJ... why we aren’t moving heaven and earth for a TPA.

Thats legit my reaction. Ill never believe this pisspot club could pull this off.
Frankly its **** we're here to begin with, that was a "MUST KEEP" guy and had we handled him the way we should, i dont think he would have ever left. People can come at me all they like about that, but we mistreated him badly, he knew it and left.

If we signed him, i dont think i'd believe it until he's running out for us in the jersey in round 1 2019
