Nicko, if they spoke out the club would never talk to them again. Probably cost the journo his job.

You seen what happened the last time journo had the gall to write negativity about the coach: Ricky ripped him during a press conference, publicly embarrassed the guy.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Has any one on here done a bit of a breakdown on how they think our cap might be allocated per player ?

After letting Paulo, Boyd and Austin go... it is completely incomprehensible to me that there is nothing left in the salary cap, without recruiting a single name recruit.

I've defended the club for a long time about TPAs... but this is simply the club not managing the salary cap appropriately. I just shake my head at how badly it has been managed.

Yep Ricky has the press under his finger in Canberra and we haven’t played many games in Sydney this year so the Telegraph journo’s haven’t been able to get a shot at him at the presser.

I also think Buzz Rothfield still feels guilty about writing the article which saw him ousted at the Sharks so Buzz won’t write anything about Sticky unless he absolutely has too. Didn’t even really mention Sticky’s name in the recent article he wrote about Jack Wighton.

I think it’s safe to say the Raiders was one of the teams who drastically over estimated what the cap would be next year and by Austin, Paulo and Boyd leaving it has probably bought them in-line now however left nothing in the bank to recruit with

Their job isnt to appease the idiots running this club
Their job isnt to be the PR firm of this club

They wont lose their job for being a journalist who has the **** spine to ask tough questions.
The fans NEED these people to be the public voice of the fans. And they steadfastly refuse to be it in favour of happy time beers at the Brewing Company on Friday. **** them. They are totally **** worthless.
These **** gutless cowards lack even the basic level of journalistic integrity to even THINK about rocking the boat

That guy that Stuart apparently "embarrassed" in the presser. Please. Stuart was the one who should feel embarrassed by that display. And everyone knows it.
If stuart tried that **** on a journo worth his salt, the journo would have absolutely stuck it to that idiot. Stuart preys on the weak and he's got a **** buffet on offer here.

There is no excusing this. None.
They are lazy, worthless slobs. They aren't even journalists. They are, as i said, a total and utter embarrassment to their profession. I find it hard to believe these people grew up wanting to get into sports journalism only to spineless worms who are too scared to put some pressure on a small market franchise which has underperformed for 2 decades

You know what? THOSE **** need to resign. The lot of them. Cowards.

Sutton is a bench player for Wigan in ESL. John Bateman and Kurt Baptiste... I'm still waiting on an official announcement.

The issue is we appear to have re-signed a heap of our guys on overs. Thus leaving no space in the salary cap.

We're in a complete mess, salary cap wise. You don't lose marquee players like Paulo, Boyd and Austin... and sign that lot if the cap has been managed properly.

This is what I roughly reckon it looks like for next year. Thats 9.5m below but I'd think its a bit variable with bonuses.

Hodgo 1m
Papa 800k
Wighton 750k
Croker 600k
Tapine 550k
Whitehead 550k
Leilua 500k
Sezer 500k
J.Bateman 450k
Cotric 400k
Rapa 400k
Sutton 300k
Sia 300k
L.Bateman 250k
Lui/Signing 200k
Havili 200k
Oldfield 200k
Baptiste 200k
Williams 200k
Knight 150k
Abbey 150k
Hingano 150k
Guler 105k
Ravalawa 105k
Murchie 105k
Hunt 105k
Kris 72.5k
Hala 72.5k
O'Hagen 72.5k
Horsburgh 72.5k

I suspect our clubs issues come down to what we pay the players from about Sutton down. If you look at the Roosters or Broncos roster those players would nearly all be on minimum. Jack and Croker would be the big overs in the top half of the squad.

According to Gavel we still have 2 top squad positions to sign, which is the good news. The bad news is we are apparently not looking at any halves 😪

I think he was counting Bateman as already signed so 2 more, as much as I love the Gnome surely he can’t be considered a top squad signing!

I love the Baptist, but if we sign him, it says so much about our poor recruiting. Our highest paid player is a hooker. We signed a stopgap this year in Havili, who not only filled in admirable as a first drop, but has shown his versatility playing the roving lock role recebntly. He is EXACTLY the type of utility player a modern squad needs, meaning we have cover for hooker, but dont require to sub the hooker for him to have an impact.

Signing Baptiste means we either have 2 hookers on the bench with both him and Havili, or we push Havili back to Mounties as third drop. neither of which is necessary or optimal. Forget the Gnome, sign some 20 year old as third drop (We have shown this year that even when we have lose our first choice hooker, we dont require our 3rd hooker to actual play 1st grade) and stop wasting money on mid range players.

We are struggling to sign any first 13 players due to the amount of money we have locked in from players 13-25 in my opinion, as edwahu has pointed out above.

I think Baptiste coming back was part of the deal with him leaving. There was really no reason for him to give up a good contract and head off to the UK otherwise.

I think conventional wisdom has it that you need three NRL-readyish hookers in the squad - One to start, one on the bench and one pressing from reserves in the case of injury.

Garvey is clearly not in the plans, so Baptiste makes a lot of sense at the right price.

Other than that, I'm with GE. It is incomprehensible to me that a salary cap could be bungled to this level. Managing a workforce under a set payroll budget really is management 101, whether you're running a McDonalds or a rugby league team. This club needs major changes in its back office.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

I don't know if it's conventional wisdom anymore, most of the top squads don't carry three NRL level hookers. Most have minimum wage depth or only carry two specialists, except for probably the Roosters. E.g

Souths - Cook, Mcillwrick, Brittain
Storm - C.Smith, B.Smith, Grant
Dragons - Mcinnes, Robson, Lovodua
Roosters - Friend, Baptiste, Radley (more backrower at the moment)
Penrith - Katoa, Egan
Sharks - Brailey, Segeyaro
Warriors - Luke, Lawton, Cook
Broncos - Only McCullough (they took it too far)

I think if we sign Baptiste we are really over allocated at Hooker as far as cap. We are probably looking at 1.5m for that position, there wouldn't be a club in the top 8 over a million (accounting for Smith TPAs).

Fair call, but I'd argue that they are playing two hookers - Hodgson and Baptise, and one utility.

I get that point, but that utility has proven to be an adequate fill in when Hodgo was injured. Would Baptiste be a better hooker option? Probably - but by using Havili we have both hooker and back row covered, and he could have a role to play in any game in the 14. I always thought it was an absolute waste that we bought Baptisete on and shifted Hodgo to lock simply to accommodate him - having Havili in the 14 would remove this need. If Hodgo gets injured again, we could either use a young hooker on minimum or a half as a 14 role - Havili is now able to play the majority if not all of the 80 minutes.

My point is - we would still be adequately covered with Hodgo, Havili, Minimum wage youth player in the hooking department - but we are short in the halves and prop. Why would we spend money in an area we are ok with, which takes away money that requires players???

Raiders player signing speculation 2018

Post by LastRaider »

Yeah it’s just crazy what the club is doing with the players from 15 to 30. Literally these should be all minimum wage players except for maybe 1 or 2. I even believe the number 14 utility should be a minimum wage, just out of u20’s hooker or half. Hell I would love it if every year we raided the u20’s comp and field our backup squad with mainly these players.

We are the only club in the comp which runs our cap up side down. It’s the left wing side of Canberra coming out of us

Yeah, I reckon we are probably 5 or 600k overallocated on players 13 - 30 and we are paying individuals about 600k overs in the top 5 relative to their market value. Jack and Croker are 400k players on the open market when we re-signed them, but they would be on well over a million total.

you need a decent 22 man squad.
I'd be very keen to see the stats on comp winners and their used players. It's not supercoach

The last 5 premiers:

Storm used 31
Sharks 24
Cows 28
Rabbits 27
Roosters 25

You can probably subtract a few for Origin. I think a better measure of the need for depth is the number of players who played 20 + games.

Storm 14
Sharks 17
Cows 16
Rabbits 11
Roosters 17

Assuming minimal season ending injuries, investing in players beyond about 10 doesn't give a huge return. If you look at most of the premiers seasons it's really very few games where these players were needed to contribute much. I think it would probably minimize the damage if you have a lot of injuries but it won't win you comps.

I suppose you need to balance that against the need for competition but I think a lot of that has to do with the mentality of the players you sign. It's more important for us where winning comps and playing rep footy wouldn't be viewed by the players as a relatively achievable goal.

The other thing is to look at the spine of those sides.

Smith, Cronk, Munster '17/ Widdop '12, Slater
Ennis, Townsend, Maloney, Barba
Granville, JT, Morgan, Coote
Koroisau, Reynolds, Keary, Inglis
Friend, Pearce, Maloney, Minichello

Only the Bunnies have a 'cheap' spine. And TBF, thats due to their age more than anything. Maybe you could argue that with the Chooks too.

You need to invest in the spine. Something we havent done since... well... since Ricky was playing.

We have Jack on 750 and Hodgo close to a million. We probably spend enough just not very wisely.

I mean if you look at all those spines they look stacked now but all of them but the Storm have a couple of great value buys or rookies at the time.

I've defended the club for a long time about TPAs... but this is simply the club not managing the salary cap appropriately. I just shake my head at how badly it has been managed.
It’s because Clubs over pay players now, this trend starting a few years back. Clubs will pay a lot more to keep certain players over pay them. Boyd esp Paulo were overpaid their value. Wigjton isn’t a 700k a year player but that’s what he is on. Look at what the Broncos are paying Hass, they over paid for Bird. So the Raiders have thrown a lot of money to players like Pappa etc. We have a few players on too much cash.

The Raiders haven’t had a good coach for a long long time....
Furner, Stuart pfft ... we need a coach that can take this talented bunch of players to the next level.
Stuart has had 5 years already and we have him till 2020 so expect more of the same.

This year is another wasted year, we blew so many games this year if we won half of them we would be in the top 4 but it’s been like this for years and years with NO improvements.

Stuart started in 2014 in that season we had the 11th best attack in the league. The following year Mick Crawley returned to the club and we have had 2015 -3rd, 2016-1st, 2017-3rd and currently 2018-1st best attack in the competition.

In that time defensively the best we have been is 7th in 2016 and the rest have all been 11th or worse.

Despite this as a club when Dean Pay moves on we decide to bring in one of the boys in Brett White. Once again our defence and inability to concede less then 20 points a game continue to cost us.

Whilst we obviously could benefit from adding to our squad until we go out and recruit someone who knows how to fix our defensive issues we will continue to be mediocre.

It is consistently shown that to win the comp you need to have a top 4 defence. I couldn’t be bothered to look it up but I would argue that in the last 10 years no team has won it without being at least in the top 5 defensive teams in the comp.

You seen what happened the last time journo had the gall to write negativity about the coach: Ricky ripped him during a press conference, publicly embarrassed the guy.

Cowards.
I can't disagree.

Yeah it's Stu Flanagan vs Dave Furner all over again.

We really do need to sort this out. Hopefully Austin's replacement knows how to defend and can work with Leilua to fix that edge.

How good would it be if we had the confidence and ability to defend errors and manage double digit leads late in the game. Most of it is mental IMO.
