Cleveland McGhie just happy to survive Australia Day

Canberra Raiders junior Cleveland McGhie just happy to survive Australia Day

For some it's Australia Day. But for others, it's Invasion Day. Or Survival Day. That's why former Canberra Raiders junior Cleveland McGhie is taking his Mawang Brothers to Sydney to play in the Survival 9s tournament on Saturday. For McGhie, playing in a team with Indigenous family and friends the day after January 26 was the perfect way to say they'd survived.

"I believe for many reasons it should be changed. The 26th of January is the day where our culture and our people look for healing," he said.

Scullion is ok, it’s Linda Burney the one who we should be worries about.

it will be interesting to see the new date settled in the next few years.
The end of january is suitable for a public holiday maybe what we celebrate on that day can shift? Maybe it can have an element to celebrate the Aboriginal people or new initiatives to close the gap?

Eddie McGuire suggested May 27, because it was the date the White Australia policy was dropped, so White Australia and Black Australia became Australia.

Now I don’t agree much with Eddie, but I think that is probably one of the best, serious date suggestions I’ve heard

Except for being a few days from bloody Winter!

Anyone moving Australia Day from summer loses my vote.

3 March is a good one ATM as it was the sign off of the Australia Act

But whenever we become a republic will be the new date

3 of March I could handle. Close enough to Summer and they could do a giant long weekend launch to the NRL season.

Prefer Sunner though.

too close to easter imo and may 27 is too close to queens bday public holiday.
i read something the other day that one of the things holding back a date change is that a public holiday that marks the end of the xmas school holiday period works well.

Mate, that’s exactly why I said in another thread it should just be the last Wednesday in April. Every now and then you’ll get a double header when it’s next to/same day as ANZAC Day.

Then, every 5-10 years, you’ll get Australia Day, ANZAC Day and Easter weekend all in the one week. It would be the perfect storm of free holidays.

Apparently no indigenous person has ever told Nigel Scullion they have a problem with Australia Day being on the 26th January. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-01-19/s ... le/9342442 It appears the bloke needs a written invitation to realise that this is a massive issue for many Australians, both indigenous and non-indigenous.

All stupidity aside, celebrating Australia Day on a day that merely commemorates the time NSW was established as a penal colony for the Brits is a bit of a joke really. It has nothing to do with Australia being recognised as a nation in its own right, nor does it recognise in any way shape or form the original inhabitants of the continent.

It really makes no sense.

29th August. A new nation was born upon the symbolic death of another.

We could also go the 10th December. This was the date the Great Emu War in Australia ended in 1932

After a quick google search of Nigel Scullion he may knows his politics but I highly doubt he knows much about indigenous affairs probably just like Julia Bishop who I don't know weather shim was a man or woman.
