That was very hard to watch at times, and I certainly shed some tears. One thing Kato's brother said was that the Dragons offered him a possible contract, but wanted him to miss the World Cup to have further clean out of his knee. He refused, as it was his dream to play for PNG in the World Cup at home. He was prepared to forego an NRL deal to represent the Kumuls.

There is more now GE, this has been tough to watch but I hope the fact so many people are watching it live (nearly 2 thousand at one point) brings comfort to everyone from his family to his teammates and club staff that he has inspired and will continue to inspire.

Disappointing nothing from the NRL though today...

Kato Ottio: Hospital recommends autopsy after PNG rugby league star's sudden death

The Papua New Guinea hospital that treated rising rugby league star and former Canberra Raider Kato Ottio has recommended an autopsy be conducted to find a definite cause for the athlete's death.

At 1:00pm he was taken to a suburban Port Moresby health clinic in the suburb of Gerehu, which said it would not speak publicly on its treatment of Ottio until Monday. It was another five hours before he was taken to a much better-equipped facility, the Pacific International Hospital.

Funeral of former Canberra Raiders winger Kato Ottio told of loyalty to PNG Kumuls

It was standing room only at the Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium in Port Moresby as thousands of family members, teammates, PNG government ministers, members of the country's rugby league community and fans gathered to farewell Kato Ottio.

Kato’s brother, Ahulo Ottio jnr, was moved to tears as he revealed that the 23-year-old had turned down a contract from St George Illawarra Dragons on the eve of the World Cup because it came with the condition he withdraw from the Kumuls squad to undergo surgery before the 2018 NRL season.

Just saw Willie Mason and Jarryd Hayne on Twitter put the call out to NRL players to chip in and make this happen.

It’s good to see that, despite me thinking they’re a pair of clowns, they are still thoughtful and have a conscious.

I don’t know if it would happen, but I would love it if the club organised some form of scholarship in his name. We’ve seen the impact us giving Kato a chance made, we should try and give other PNG kids a chance as well.
Feel free to call me RickyRicky StickStick if you like. I will also accept Super Fui, King Brad, Kid Dynamite, Chocolate-Thunda... or Brad.

Former Canberra Raiders winger Kato Ottio turned down St George Illawarra NRL contract for World Cup

Former Canberra Raiders flyer Kato Ottio knew this could be his only chance to represent his people in a World Cup in front of his people. That's why he turned down an NRL contract with St George Illawarra and was instead heading to England to play for Widnes in the Super League.

"I lost count of how many times I practically begged him to take up the Saints' offer and forget the World Cup," an emotional Ahulo jnr said.

Dispute over where to bury former Canberra Raiders winger Kato Ottio

A dispute has emerged between the families of the deceased Papua New Guinea rugby league star Kato Ottio over where to bury him.

His body rests in a funeral home where police yesterday intervened when Ottio's father's family, who are from Bougainville, tried to claim the body over his mother's family, who are from Tatana in the capital.

Ottio to be laid to rest at Tatana today

The body of late Kato Ottio will be laid to rest today at Tatana Island in Port Moresby. One of his relatives and Tatana councellor Opao Udia told the Post-Courier details of his funeral and burial service have been moved one day forward given Monday’s dispute over the body at the Funeral Home.

“All the proceedings in the program were delayed one day but the funeral and burial service will still be held tomorrow (today) at Tatana island,” said Mr Udia.

Widnes Vikings to wear tribute on jerseys through 2018 for former Canberra Raiders winger Kato Ottio

Widnes Vikings players will be proudly wear a special tribute to Kato Ottio on their home and away jerseys, throughout the entire 2018 Betfred Super League campaign.

The Club was approached by senior team members, who wanted to show their respects for their fallen team-mate. In response, a special ‘Kato 18’ shirt transfer has been created, which will be worn at the heart of the player’s shirts. With a distinctive yellow and red design, in honour of the traditional colour of the Kumuls playing strip, the transfer is a fitting tribute to the late PNG international.

I would expect the raiders will do something once the season starts, might even get announced at the members day in a few weeks.

The NRL have been noticeably quiet in it all though and the players association only got involved once Mason suggested it on twitter

Canberra Raiders players decide to create Kato Ottio Memorial Fund

The Raiders have already thrown their support behind a campaign by the Widnes Vikings, but have now decided to appeal directly to their own fanbase to help make Kato’s dream of buying his mother a house a reality. The 2018 Raiders playing squad has rallied behind the cause, with Sia Soliola helping to get the support going for the Kato Ottio Memorial fund.

“Kato was one of the most humble and wonderful people you could ever meet and his recent passing has had a huge impact on the club and his former teammates,” Soliola said. “We’ve decided to appeal directly to Raiders fans to help us make Kato’s dream a reality.”

Canberra Raiders could create Kato Ottio scholarship for Papua New Guinea players

The Canberra Raiders will look to set up a Kato Ottio scholarship as a lasting legacy to help further the careers of promising Papua New Guinea footballers. Furner said the club would hold a tribute to Ottio at their first home match of the NRL season - against the Newcastle Knights at Canberra Stadium on March 18 - which would also double as a fundraiser.

"We did pinpoint that first home game as the major fundraiser. It starts online and we'll do a tribute to him at that game," Furner said.

Could put something on their Jerseys like Widnes are doing for the whole season. Just a little something would be great.
Widnes have used the logo they put on their training shirts a few weeks ago. Maybe the Raiders could use the same on their jerseys.

Canberra Raiders to fly Kato Ottio's mum from PNG for Newcastle Knights game

The Canberra Raiders will honour Kato Ottio at their first home game of the NRL season. And his mother and siblings will be there. In a moving gesture to the family of the former Green Machine flyer, the Raiders will fly Ottio's mother Joyce out from Papua New Guinea for their round-two game against the Newcastle Knights at Canberra Stadium next Sunday.

NRL: Ahulo Ottio thanks the Canberra Raiders for emotional tribute to Kato Ottio

An emotional tribute to the late Kato Ottio was a timely reminder that losing a close game of football was just that - a game. Ottio's brother Ahulo says the family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support offered by Raiders chief executive Don Furner, the club and its fans.

"[Kato's] life was almost a bit fast but he had a good head on him. The thing that resonated with him throughout his whole playing career was humility," Ottio said.
