Is this the Raiders best 17 for 2018?

Every NRL club’s best 17 for 2018: The off-season transfers shaking up the competition for next season

RAIDERS

1. Jack Wighton
2. Jordan Rapana
3. Jarrod Croker
4. Joey Leilua
5. Nick Cotric
6. Blake Austin
7. Aidan Sezer
8. Junior Paulo
9. Josh Hodgson
10. Shannon Boyd
11. Josh Papalii
12. Elliott Whitehead
13. Sia Soliola

14. Sam Williams
15. Joseph Tapine
16. Luke Bateman
17. Charlie Gubb

The Raiders are in retention mode, meaning that the core of their roster has been there for the last couple of years and the only tinkering is happening around the edges. Charlie Gubb played some good games for the Warriors in 2017 and he may force his way onto the bench, while Sam Williams will likely fight it out with Adam Clydsdale for the bench utility role.

No, but it's probably the one he will pick.

Personally at the start of the year I would like to see the Papalii / Tapine / Whitehead backrow continue, and I would start with Knight or Gubb (depending on off seasons) in the front row in place of Boyd. Boyd back to the bench with Williams, Sia and the other out of Knight/Gubb.

I'd be tempted to start with Williams but I will give Austin / Sezer the benefit of the doubt to not screw up such a soft draw at the start of the year.

14. Royce Hunt (Comes on to run hard in a short impact stint. Best part of his game.)
15. Sia Soliola
16. Liam Knight
17. Charlie Gubb

Hodgson to play 80.
If Baptiste is still at the club he takes the 14.
I think Williams needs to be either starting in the halves or not in the top 17 at all.

This is all for round 1 of course. If results aren't good in the first 4 rounds then obviously changes are needed. I wouldn't hate trying out:

1. Brad Abbey
2. Nick Cotric
3. Jarrod Croker
4. Joey Leilua

Agreed. Bateman should be replaced by either Knight or Hunt wih Williams in the 14 or 7.

I'm really not quite sure I'd have Williams on the bench, he either starts or is at Mounties for me.

I'd go with....

1. Jack Wighton
2. Jarrod Croker
3. Nick Cotric
4. Joey Leilua
5. Jordan Rapana
6. Blake Austin
7. Aiden Sezer/Sam Williams
8. Junior Paulo
9. Josh Hodgson
10. Shannon Boyd

12. Josh Papalii
13. Elliot Whitehead
-----------------------
14. Kurt Baptiste
15. Sia Soliola
16. Luke Bateman
17. Charlie Gubb

If Wighton can't solve his problems, I'd have him in the centres and work it out from there.

I don't really care who's the halfback out of the 2 named there... neither are really that good.

12. Josh Papalii
13. Elliot Whitead

14. Blake Austin
15. Jack Wighton
16. Liam Knight
17. Shannon Boyd
In general, I like where you are going with this Zim, but I have a tweak or 2.
1. Jack Wighton
2. Nick Cotric
3. Jarrod Croker
4. Joey Leilua
5. Jordan Rapana
6. Blake Austin
7. Aidan Sezer
8. Junior Paulo
9. Josh Hodgson
10. Shannon Boyd
11. Joseph Tapine
12. Josh Papalii
13. Elliott Whitehead

14. Sam Williams/ Kurt Baptiste (Ricky is using this role as injury cover only, but for some reason I feel that all 3 of our halves will make the 17).
15. Sia Soliola
16. Liam Knight/ Luke Bateman
17. Charlie Gubb

As for your 2nd attempt,
1. If BJ was gone, it would be interesting to see if Cotric or Wighton got the gig at centre, and therefore, if Abbey or Oldfield got the other spot (PS. a great reason to be looking at Mocidreki [spelling]).
2. I like the idea of starting Gubb (hell, it could be Knight if he comes good, or even Sia) and bringing Boyd off the bench too. Im an advocate for splitting our 2 big boppa's.
3. I too believe Austin could be our utility 'wildcard' player, and that a Sezer/Williams pairing would be better than Sezer/ Austin. Passing wide to our ball runners is our attack, we don't need Austin running.

11. Joe Tapine
12. Elliot Whitehead
13. Josh Papalii

Papalii is growing outwards. I'm concerned for his agility in defence on an edge. Plus, I want him making making 15 hitups a game in 60-70min, trying to mirror a Taumalolo game. Papalii has footwork at the line and the size (&weight) to make impact runs in the middle.
Whitehead did well at Lock, but he's too skillful to not be on an edge IMO. We only put him there cause our other options were injured and garbage.

Can't we just get Papalii to lose some weight? I mean he was the best second rower in the comp just over a year ago.

If he doesn't lose the weight he won't be able to play like Taumololo anyway. He just doesn't have the same motor and he can't turn the beast mode on as easily.

@matt
Williams to me is either a backup or a starter. If he's here to challenge the halves he's not going to build a good case coming off the bench for 15-20mins a match. Likewise if he is going to provide good injury cover He needs to be playing 80mins in Mounties every week leading a team around a park.

Bateman and Knight are different body types and I think if you've got a Soliola / Gubb / Bateman bench you're running 3 similar guys. For me it'd be either Soliola or Gubb to make way for Bateman if he's coming in. Knight provides a big body on the bench that has regularly punched out 150m when starting for mounties.
But you're also in the camp of Boyd to the bench so that would solve that issue in your side with a bench of Boyd, Bateman, Soliola / Gubb.

Ricky Stuart's selection of Nick Cotric at wing was left field at the start of 2017.

I'm expecting there will be more left field selections for 2018.

Yep. Waste of a bench spot really.

Austin much better in the 14 as he can cover multiple roles in the backline and can give some impact coming in fresh against tiring legs.

Williams and Sezer could be a decent halves combo if allowed to work together and not play exclusively left/right.

I'll have a crack
Wighton
Cotric
Croker
BJ
Rapana
Seezer
Williams
Paulo
Hodgson
Boyd
Paps
Tapine
Whitehead

Austin
Soliola
Knight
Gubb

I always saw seezer as a 5/8 and Williams as a natural 7 over the years, probably not the team I would pick as I would mash up the back 5, but Ricky will stick with that for the first few losses at least

Matt Allwood starting a season at centre, Wighton to 5/8. I agree Ricky usually springs a surprise or two. Hopefully they all come off like Cotric!

Tapine starting on an edge may well be one. He's punched out some very solid 80 minute games there for NZ.

Defs start Tarps in the second row, with Whitehead at lock. It’s the only way.

One of our biggest problem this year was our forwards, we can't carry two massive guys to start then two small props to replace them as it makes it far too easy teams to counter. Play one big one small per rotation and tell Paulo he isn't a 5/8.

Agree 100%, and I would think most posters would.

But if sticky didn't figure that out last year, I'm not sure if he will this time out. My hope is that he plays Tarps on the edge, and Smelly as lock. He had an obvious love for Sia playing in the middle, so hopefully he can pair him with Paulo and shift Boyd to the bench.
