Could be without papa and Taylor as well pending suspensions.

Assuming their both out I've got

1. Wighton
2. Lee
3. Turner
4. Leilua
5.Rapana
6. Austin
7. Sezer
8. Boyd
9. Hodgeson
10. Lima
11. Soliola
12. Whitehead
13. Bateman

Interchange:
14. Clysedale
15. Tapine
16. Priest
17. Sorensen

I want to put Cotric in at wing but I think Eddie deserves the chance to defend his spot if he's still at the club.

I also considered putting cotric on the bench to come play centre and Turner can shift to hooker so hodgo can do his running ball player like when baptiste comes on. But I'm not sure Ricky will be so experimental in round 1.

Sorensen comes in to fill in for soliola at second row.

Canberra Raiders Adam Clydsdale has sights set on round one game against North Queensland Cowboys

He was down on himself after the Canberra Raiders' trial, but Adam Clydsdale has impressed coach Ricky Stuart so far this pre-season, with the next two weeks to decide whether he's travelling to Townsville.

"I played a few minutes there today, but I've just got to be better than yesterday and better than today. We've got two weeks to work on that and two weeks for me, personally. I've known [Baptiste] is going to be out for a couple of rounds so I've set my sights on [the Cowboys], but after that performance I don't know, I've just got to be better than that.

My side assuming Papalii and Taylor are eligible

1. Wighton
2. Lee
3. Cotric
4. Leilua
5. Rapana
6. Austin
7. Sezer
8. Boyd
9. Hodgson
10. Tapine
11. Papalii
12. Whitehead
13. Soliola

14. Turner
15. Bateman
16. Taylor
17. Priest

I couldn't in good conscience select the Horse in my NRL team. Yuck.

1. Wighton

4. Leilua
5. Rapana
6. Austin
7. Sezer
8. Tapine
9. Hodgson
10. Boyd
11. Papalii
12. Whitehead
13. Soliola

14. Turner
15. Bateman
16. Taylor
17. Lima

Hodgson to play 80, or have a short spell at some point. No interchange just not at hooker for a few sets.
Turner to cover any issues we have with fatigue to hodgson or injury elsewhere, or just a point of difference during the match.
With Paulo out Tapine starts. Puts our best available mid 3 against Scott and Lolo.

Edit:
The reason for Cotric over Turner is he actually looks like causing problems when he has a bit of space. Turner looks much more like he should be at 5/8 than further out.

I'd be swapping Bateman and Soliola. I know the positions are pretty much identical, but so,etching doesn't seem right about Bateman in No. 8

I wonder if the NRL will refuse to register Taylor without some form of ban... so he won't be available for Round 1 either.

Maybe so but I don't want to see Lachlan Croker anywhere near first grade this year unless there's an emergency

I've included him due to lack of options if we lose a playmaker.
The injury to Baptiste is a real shame, he gives us that extra little bit of speed and energy through the middle. We won't get that from Clydesdale or Turner.

I can certainly understand the thinking behind starting Taylor. Most similar body type to Paulo. Lots of experience. Ready to go with a point to prove.

Cotric in the centres
Lima starting front row
The rest pick themselves.

Bench
Bateman
Tapine
Taylor
Clydesdale I am happy for him to sit on the bench for 80 min if Hodgson is okay but I think first game of the season in North QLD we may need to give Hodgson a ten min break around the 55min mark.

I like this team, although I wouldn't mind seeing Lui/Priest there for Taylor as I think in the heat they may be suited a bit better.

What he would need a rest from is the workload in defence as a result of being on the middle of the field. That is not something you then want Austin to pick up.

Canberra Raiders to work hard after trial loss: Sezer

Canberra playmaker Aidan Sezer says the club has plenty of work to do ahead of the NRL season after a significantly under strength line-up was thrashed 44-0 by Newcastle in their only trial match.

"We've got a lot to work on and we'll talk about that internally," Sezer said on Monday. "It was a disappointing result but we'll go back to training and assess things."

VIDEO: Canberra Raiders five eighth Aidan Sezer: We've got a lot to work on

Despite the disappointing result, Raiders halfback Aidan Sezer says the fitness gained from Saturday's trial against the Knights is one positive to take out of the match.

Sezer spoke to the media today at Harrison School as part of the Raiders local school blitz, which saw the team help deliver wellbeing and health messages to schools around Canberra.

The three times I have watched Turner this pre-season I haven't been impressed. I think he is going to need a few 80 minute performances with Mounties before he will be ready to come into FG. Cotric looked more comfortable in the trial and looked to handle the pace better.

Not sure what's happening with Fensom but if he's going to be around this year I would consider moving Sia up front and starting Fenno at lock.

Missing Paulo and Croker is going to be tough to overcome.

Just on Dunamis Lui: I'd be happier to have him in the side if he'd learnt from his first few hit ups against the knights but he seemed determined to just keep trying the same thing. He'd go in high trying to run over guys that were bigger than him and then get pushed back. He's not big enough to always bend the line like Boyd. He should have realized what was going on and changed it up. Hit the line then get to the ground quick and play the ball.

Good to see no fear in his running though.

I am assuming the following will be unavailable;

Jnr Paulo
J Croker
K Baptist
D Taylor

1. Jack Wighton
2. Edrick Lee
3. Nick Cotric
4. Joey Leilua
5. Jordan Rapana
6. Blake Austin
7. Aidan Sezer
8. Jeff Lima
9. Josh Hodgson
10. Shannon Boyd
11. Josh Papalii
12. Elliott Whitehead
13. Sia Soliola

14. Dunamas Lui
15. Joseph Tapine
16. Adam Clydesdale
17. Luke Bateman

I think Turner needs to play a few games for Mounties to get used to the pace and after hearing Priest's comments he could do with the same.

He did end up on his back pretty regularly, which put pressure on the next runner.

That bench is absolute madness. Totally absurd. I've been over this 1000 times, but here we go again:

- Stuart can barely get his 3rd running bench forward on the park. What was he slipping them on for last year? 20 minutes? And that was with Boyd, Paulo and co not even playing 50 minutes a game.
- The team you've named is using 7 players to cover 240 minutes of football. There are also only 8 interchanges permitted.
- This bench covers no injuries outside of the forward pack at all. We'd see Tapine or Taylor at centre or in the halves or Bateman at hooker.

You can argue that the 'utility' is a waste of space until you're blue in the face but it really isn't. Because a 4th running forward who gets no minutes and covers no injuries is the true waste of space.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

* Dave Taylor's bench spot, I doubt he'll be cleared to play though.
** If Papalii is out, I'd actually be tempted to bring Sorensen straight in as not to disrupt the middle third even more after already losing Vaughan and being without Paulo.
*** I'd have Edrick, but I have no idea what the go is here. Cotric is obviously next in line.
