He picked up a bad injury playing NSW Cup for Mounties last year (which is the reason he was eligible for the show btw).CJ42 wrote:so he wasn't even playing NSW cup? hmm. good on him though, exciting times for him.
He's definitely 25.greeneyed wrote:Pretty sure he's 28, just didn't kick on at the Roosters. He's a 25 year old back rower, captained the Roosters U20's and was offered an NRL contract by the Roosters, which he turned down as he didn't enjoy living in the city.

Re: NRL Rookie winner Lou Goodwin signs with Canberra Raider
That's actually a pretty good deal for us. Good exposure for a week, a players contract basically covered by a third party, but nothing really changes for him. He gets to keep playing at Mounties, but his contract is on a different letterhead.greeneyed wrote:Ben explained the rules, it's a no lose for the Raiders. He plays Mounties now, the NRL picks up the vast bulk of his contract, so he's second tier, and it only impacts the Raiders cap if he gets to first grade.
Seems like a very nice guy. I was hoping for the local, Jordan Martin, but both are Mounties players.

Lou Goodwin profile:
The country boy with a city haircut
I’m Lou Goodwin. The country boy with a city haircut.
What would it mean to you to become a professional NRL player?
It’s my dream to play in the NRL. I was very close when I was a young fella.
Tell me why you haven’t already made it? What went wrong?
I made a mess of my chance at making it in the NRL. I was signed for the Roosters but I’d never lived in the city and I had lost my driving license and was working full time, training and captaining the roosters U20’s and doing it all on public transport.
Why will it be different now?
I got myself into a bad head-space and needed to get back to the country. I’m older and wiser and ready to give it another go!
Tell me what sort of lad you are? Country boy or city boy?
I’m a country boy that loves fishing, hunting and hiking but I love my footie and a good cappuccino and I’m ready to give the city another go!
Tell me about your dad? And how he has influenced you and your life?
My dad is a former NRL star. He had a ten-year career where he played for the Penrith Panthers, Parramatta Eels and the South Sydney Tigers. We all moved back to the country when his career ended and grew up exactly the same way he did. It would be amazing if I could have a ten-year NRL career like he did!
How much does this opportunity mean to you?
It means everything, I know I didn’t give it my all when I was younger. Now is the time to make up for that! I want to win this.

He'll be second tier, given the NRL meets much of the contract. But he's a Raiders contracted player.

I watched this show each week (and genuinely enjoyed it). Lou was the standout contestant and a deserved winner but faces a huge task to even challenge for first grade given the Raiders' strength in that area. What really surprised me, though, was that none of the struggling clubs (cough, cough Newcastle) tried to grab him. Lou might be good enough to play FG for them this weekend given what they've been through this year

Watched a fair bit of this show, looked the winner a long way out. Hopefully he can crack first grade one day

Lou Goodwin has already received more FTA airtime this year than any other player in the squad he just joined. Well done.

Re: NRL Rookie winner Lou Goodwin signs with Canberra Raider
Thank you raiders for the tickets tonight , was an interesting thing to see.
Lou chose well, we are one of the few clubs who will work on developing him further
Wondered why no-one of the other clubs put their hands up, cause he dropped out if the big smoke last time ?or they just know they suck at developing players ???
Will be interesting to see if any players fro the rookie group kick in and make first grade

He should use Clay Priest as his model and motivation. Stuart has shown he will pick blokes who put in the effort at training. If he is good enough and works hard enough he will get a run.

NRL Rookie winner Lou Goodwin signs with Canberra Raiders
I suspect the Raiders had decided to draft both Goodwin and Martin if they won. Why wouldn't they? The players are in our system at Mounties already (Martin taken into Mounties for 2016) and they would have spoken to them well before tonight as to whether they'd seek to draft them. Plus the contract is mostly met by the NRL and it's only a second tier. Canberra would be mad not to take either of them. It would have pretty much been decided well before tonight.Big Jack wrote:I watched this show each week (and genuinely enjoyed it). Re: NRL Rookie winner Lou Goodwin signs with Canberra Raider
Everything I've read (and the one episode I watched hungover one Sunday) seems to make the show look like a bit of a joke really. This bloke has been given a 'Raiders contract' and he'll continue to play with the club he is already signed on with, maybe just one park grade higher. Going om what Ben said about his contract, the show means the NRL essentially pay the majority of it, meaning we pretty much get a reserve grader for free. We only pick up some slack if he plays first grade next year, which if we're being serious, is no chance of happening whatsoever. Seems like we've had a bit of a win with this.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.
