So the preseason is over, it's time for the season to start! The Raiders had an impressive trial win over the Newcastle Knights in Orange. It was not impressive because of the 34-28 final score, but because of the slick performance in the first half with something close to a first string squad. The forwards were outstanding, making big metres. Try and single them out, you couldn't. Boyd and Nuuausala were terrific as starting props. Then there was Whitehead, Papalii and Soliola... in other words, everyone! Hodgson was outstanding from dummy half.
The Raiders put on all their 34 points in a first half blitz. It was all the more impressive, given that the spine was still missing Blake Austin and Jack Wighton. In the second half, the Raiders started with all the second string players and the Knights came back in the scoring. But Canberra had already done what they needed in the first half: put their top team through their paces. It's hard not to be excited.
2016 Trial Match: Canberra Raiders V Newcastle Knights
The Raiders are at home for the first match of the season and take on the Penrith Panthers. The biggest surprise is that coach Ricky Stuart has selected star five eighth Blake Austin on the bench, a sign that he is not fully fit after his off season shoulder surgery. Sam Williams is in the No. 6, alongside Aidan Sezer. The Raiders have an 18 man squad, with hooker utility Kurt Baptiste named as the extra man.
Other surprises? Jordan Rapana won the battle with Sisa Waqa for a Raiders wing spot - and some are surprised at that, but others not. I am. The other surprise is Mal Meninga Medalist Sia Soliola pushed to the bench, with Elliott Whitehead to start and Papalii moved. Most expected Whitehead would have to force his way into the starting team. But there is no doubt the English international is a top quality player.
With new captain Matt Moylan missing through injury, the Panthers have veterans Soward and Wallace in the halves, while Will Smith has been named at fullback. New recruits Trent Merrin and Peter Hiku make their official debuts with the club. Waqa Blake is included at centre for the injured Dean Whare. Hooker James Segeyaro will play his 100th NRL game. It's also the first official match with the club for new coach Anthony Griffin.
Late changes: Blake Austin has been cleared to play, despite doubts about his fitness early in the week. This means Kurt Baptiste drops off the bench. Some murmurings around that Matt Moylan might be a late inclusion.

History: Canberra has won 34 of 68 matches against the Penrith Panthers, with one draw. In the last 10 matches, the Raiders have won five, the Panthers five. In 2015, the Raiders won both matches against Penrith - in Round 20 and Round 25. The Raiders have a strong record at Canberra Stadium against the Panthers, winning 17 of 25 clashes - though results have been fairly even in more recent years.
2015 Round 20 Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers
2015 Round 25 Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers
And, here's some Raiders-Panthers history for you... the famous 1990 Canberra Raiders Grand Final win!
1990 Grand Final Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers
Form: The Raiders are on an official LLLWW form line in their last five appearances, while the Panthers have a LWLLW form line. But that was las year. The Raiders won their only trial of 2016 against the Knights in Orange. Meanwhile, the Panthers won 24-20 over the Bulldogs through a last minute try - and then lost 22-8 to the Eels. The Panthers played both trials at Penrith Stadium.
Betting: The Raiders are $1.68 favourites in the match; the Panthers are paying $2.20. The Panthers have 3.5 points start.
Our tip: The Raiders need to make a strong start to the season, given the number of matches at home - and given many of the opponents are teams in the lower half of the 2015 competition ladder. The Raiders had their worst ever home record in 2015 and that needs to be turned around. The match will be played in very hot conditions - with the top temperature forecast in the mid 30s. With a 3pm kick off, the game will be played at worst time of day. But both the Raiders and Panthers have been training in these conditions in recent weeks, so it should not favour one side or the other. Even if Austin is out, I'm tipping the Raiders will have enough points in them to defeat the Panthers. What the fans will also be hoping for is a solid defensive performance. Raiders by 10.
What they're saying:
Sia Soliola on the expected hot weather: "You can do as best as you can preparing for it, but the weather is out of our control. We've just got to do our best to prepare for the weather and the opposition."
Joey Leilua: "It's my first full pre-season in a long time and I just feel great, I feel like I can do a lot more things. I reckon I've lost about eight kilos, but it's more the fact I've actually lost.. I feel this is the start for me. Last year I came [to the Raiders] and did a couple of shoulder charges and didn't play much. I've been working hard on that tackle technique this pre-season and it's been tough, but I'm enjoying it."

Still expecting 34 degrees at kick off.
Can't remember the last time I wore shorts to a Raiders game at Bruce stadium.
Maybe that Knights game in 06.
Hopefully it doesn't end like that match
