Canberra Region Rugby League in conjunction with NRL Development officers have been thoroughly pleased with the number of girls who turned out today for the Girls ‘Come and Try’ Day at Northbourne Oval.

Over 50 girls from schools all around Canberra turned out on the day where they were able to learn the basics of rugby league and enjoy a great day in the sunshine.

The motivation for the day was to gain registration numbers for the introduction of an Under 14s competition purely for girls.

“The purpose of the day was to show 12-14 year old girls that rugby league isn’t just for the boys and they could play too,” said CRRL Junior Football Administrator Nikki McLean.

“We had over 50 girls come along, most of whom had never played the game before. The girls were fantastic and not afraid to tackle others twice their size. There was also some great attack with some beautiful long range tries featuring a lot of passing.

“We are hoping this will build a base for our 10 week U/14 girl’s competition with the final being played at Canberra Stadium in September.

“Our clubs have all come on board and will be helping with coaching and first aid. It is hoped that we can recruit enough girls to have five teams from the ACT and Queanbeyan in the first year and grow the competition from there.”

The day started off with a clinic conducted by the NRL Development, and then all girls enjoyed lunch together before playing in several games.

“We had a coaching clinic this morning where we went over tackling, catching and passing and playing the ball and then a nice lunch break in the sun before we got stuck into some games,” said NRL Development Officer Adam Kyle.

“We had a handful of girls that play already against the boys and they helped us out a bit of coaching today which was a great help. The standard has actually been really good and it’s great to hear the girls laughing and seeing so many faces smiling on girls playing rugby league for the first time.

“We’ve been pleased with the numbers, they have really exceeded expectation. To get over 50 girls come down gives us a real hope that we can get a girls competition started for this age group.
