It is always tough playing teams whose season is over. They can throw caution to the wind which can be very difficult to defend against. Normally though they don't really have the heart to win a game against a team that is really committed in defence.
To win we need to start fast with high completions and we need good line speed and bruising defence. If we can manage that then I think the panthers will struggle to go with us.

What are you talking about?? We were up 4-0 after four seconds against the Titans, and scored 24 points in the last 90 seconds!!Raidersrawesome wrote:There has to be uncertainty at the base of the mountains. But if we turn up like we did against the Titans they will beat us.

If we defend like we did last week, we will be in with a chance. But 17 blokes need to be committed to the cause.
Re: 2012 Rd 23 V Panthers: Teams and Previews *Team p1*
It appears Shillo's been talking up our finals chances in the press again. Panthers by 20.

"If we won all four, that means we are in," he said.
"If we won three, there's a possibility we could be in.
"I'd like to play it safe and win all four."
Comments like this from Shillo, really give me the ****, and I don't know why

Fensom's best form of defence is attack
by David Shillington
The amount of defence Shaun Fensom gets through makes all the headlines, but I would argue his attack is just as crucial to the Canberra Raiders getting wins on the board. Fenno became the first player in Raiders history to make more than 50 tackles and 20 hit-ups in a game in our win against the Brisbane Broncos last weekend. It's a statistic I wasn't aware of until a couple of days after the game. More pivotal was what he did with the ball, the plays he shut down with a desperate tackle in the middle of the field and the opportunities he created with second-phase play.

Canberra Raiders halfback Josh McCrone has a strange ritual with his mouthguard
From the moment the footy boots go on to the time he's in the shower after a game, Josh McCrone's mouthguard remains firmly clamped inside his jaw. He's been doing it ever since his mum passed on some timely advice after he left it in the dressing sheds after a junior game when he was 12. ''After that mum said leave it in, that way you won't lose it,'' he said. ''I keep it in until I'm ready to go, it's the last thing I take out.''

Frustrating injury run disrupts Harrison's sleep
Raiders forward Bronson Harrison has opened up to club members about the most frustrating season of his NRL career and addressed speculation about whether he is being squeezed out of Canberra. ''It's not my preference to leave, I know things have popped up in the paper along the way,'' Harrison said. ''I've got another two years but sometimes the decision's not always in my hands, so I'm not too sure yet. If the club would like me to stay that would be my preference.''

If they won three they need to win by a combined total of about 150 points and rely on the Tigers winning two or less.Toviii wrote:"If we won all four, that means we are in," he said.

If Harrison has a further 2 years on his deal i dont undertand how it isnt up to him?
The club could tell him to look around but at the end of the day he doesnt have to leave.

Alan Tongue on ABC 666:
# Good win, Raiders really had to grind away, will take plenty of confidence out of that. Penrith have been inconsistent, Raiders should win, but must show the form they did last week.
# Away performances. We've gone the full circle, used to be we could perform at home, not away. It's a bit all over the shop, staying in a hotel at home was amazing last week.
# Dane Tilse should be right to go, but can't be certain about the timing of child's birth. Expect Joe Picker to be right as well, not quite sure, and Jarrad Kennedy to drop off the bench, but David Furner keeps these things close to his chest.
# Laurie Daley was great with NSW Country and Indigenous All Stars. I think he'd be great as NSW coach. He has the passion and that's what counts.
# Terry Campese and Ken Stephen Medal nomination. He does a lot off the field for charity.
NEXT WEEK: Tim Gavel will return to Canberra Grandstand from the Olympics and we'll return to a separate thread for the best in breaking Raiders news on a Saturday morning.

So no Bronson this week. I was as critical of his 'performances' as anyone last year, but based on this years play, if he has some form and fitness then I would look to play him. The side is very low on experience when you look at the line ups and games played printed in the Friday Tele. It is always about performance though, but should one of the forward line up be injured or lose form then he would be a chance to play.greeneyed wrote:Canberra Raiders expected to take to the field 1-17 after today's captain's run.

Read About a Raider: Josh McCrone
David Beard - Have you changed your habit of not taking out your mouthguard until you hit the sheds? It doesn’t appear to be reliable! We’ve lost more than we’ve won!
Josh: No David, I’m still doing it. The mouth guard only comes out once I’ve come out of the shower and got changed and tied up my shoe laces. It’s a pretty weird trait but it’s something I’ve been doing since I was for a while now. When I was 12 I left my mouth guard in the dressing sheds after a game and after that my Mum said to leave it in my mouth after the game so you don’t lose it. To this day I keep it in until I’m ready to go. It’s always the last thing I take out. I don’t think that my strange habit is the reason we’ve lost more games than we’ve won though David!
Greg Delaney: Hi Josh, I was wondering if you are happy with your kicking game? And how much time a week do you spend on your kicking game?
Josh: It’s probably not a finished product as of yet Greg. I’ve been reasonably happy with my kicking game this year but I feel there’s still a lot to improve on. Getting repeat sets and good field position is crucial in the NRL so I’ll never rest on my laurels as far as my kicking game goes. I do practice kicking before every training session and it’s something that I work hard on. I practice my short kicking game – grubbers, chips and bombs – on different days to when I practice my long kicking game so I can focus more effectively on each.

Raiders out to end topsy turvy NRL season
Canberra coach David Furner says the lure of finals football can finally put an end to the Raiders topsy-turvy NRL season.
Canberra have been one of the most inconsistent and frustrating teams this season with big wins followed by big losses or vice versa.
This has been nowhere more evident than their efforts in the past three weeks. Last weekend's impressive 28-12 win over Brisbane was preceded by a 36-6 hammering at the hands of Newcastle which followed a 36-4 round-21 away thrashing of Cronulla.
But Furner said he saw signs in last week's defeat of the Broncos that his side might have finally turned the corner for good.
"I thought last weekend we played a very good brand of football - we completed and defended quite well. Basically, it has given us a chance to stay alive," Furner said.
"We have worked hard as a group to get that consistency. Some of the losses we have had have been big. With results in the competition, possession is having a massive impact on scorelines and we have been on the wrong end of some of those due to our completions.
"Last week, we completed well and we can draw confidence from that."
The Raiders sit two points adrift of Wests Tigers who are in eight place and, realistically, need to win all four remaining games to be a chance of playing in the finals, beginning with their match against Penrith away on Sunday.
Furner acknowledged Canberra's fate.
"We have got no second chances - we have to treat every game as 'must win'," he said.
The Raiders will turn out as named for the Panthers clash.
Joe Picker has been cleared of concussion and will play, while Dane Tilse was expected to miss the match due to the birth of his child, but his wife is not due until Tuesday.
Jarrad Kennedy and Bronson Harrison will drop off the Raiders' extended bench.
Penrith are also expected to be as named, with coach Ivan Cleary to cut one player from his extended bench closer to kickoff.

Robinson twins create their own identities
WHEN Penrith rookie Travis Robinson was overlooked for today's game against Canberra, his mother Christine's reaction was a mixture of disappointment and relief. ''No I wasn't [disappointed] actually because Travis was threatening all week to smash him, and I said no one's smashing anyone,'' Christine laughed. ''They've never played against each other the boys, they've always been in the same team and never had to compete against each other.''

Raiders must put destiny in their own hands: Shillington
You can't mention the Canberra Raiders' finals chances without the word ''mathematical'' close behind. ''I just spoke to the boys at training and said 'just make sure we're taking care of ourselves with our preparation','' Shillington said. ''We can't control other results, although they've been coming together nicely for us, what we can control is having a win this weekend. We win this week and next week [at home against 14th-placed Roosters] and we'll be looking at sitting in the top eight, not mathematical chances, we'll be up there.''

Former Penrith winger Sandor Earl unloads on Ivan Cleary
James Phelps
CANBERRA winger Sandor Earl has lit the fuse for a fiery clash at Centrebet Stadium today, with the former Panther suggesting Ivan Cleary has created a culture of fear at the club.
Set to face off against Penrith for the first time since switching to the Raiders mid-year, Earl said he was saddened by the plight of the club and the players Cleary had encouraged to move on.
Earl also said Cleary created a divide when he stripped Luke Lewis of the captaincy.
"I thought what happened to Lewie was really wrong," Earl said. "He has the most respect out there, from everyone in the club, and it just wasn't right. For whatever reason, it was still wrong. He was our leader and if he was upset by it all, well, me and all the other players were, too. We were always going to back him.
"People say that it was the wrong call and him leaving proves it. It shows there is a lot going on at Penrith."
Sandor, who has played six games for the Raiders, said he was a happy at Penrith until Cleary led a cultural change.
"Whatever they are going through, whatever the process is, they think it is right," Earl said. "I am not sure it is, but that is up to them.
"I, personally, think it is sad to see the place crumbling. I came there when the likes of Luke Lewis, Trent Waterhouse, Petero Civoniceva were there. It was a good place to be and with the group you always think something good was about to happen. This year it wasn't like that."
Sandor revealed he is on the verge of signing a new two-year deal with the Raiders after a call from Canberra captain David Shillington helped to resurrect his career.
"I was in a tough situation," Earl said. "I didn't have a pre-season, was coming back from injury and there was a new coaching staff.
"I thought I was playing well, and I was in good form for Windsor, who had a very good set-up. But I wasn't in Ivan's plans. We had a conversion and when it came to the serious end, yeah, he told me I wasn't. It was disappointing.
"Shillington told me of the interest and we did the deal a couple of weeks later."
Earl also said he felt for suspended Penrith utility Travis Burns, who has been told to look for another club.
"It is never nice to see (the taps on the shoulder). But that is just football these days," earl said. "As bad as it is, that is the way it goes. I just hope there is something around the corner for the blokes that don't have a future there."
Despite scoring two tries and running for 757m in his six games for the Raiders, Earl has a point to prove today.
"It is going to be weird," Earl said.
"Definitely exciting. I can't lie and say I don't want to go there and beat them by 40 and score a hat-trick. That would be great."
