Two appearances for Australia as well... should have been more.

Am I right in thinking that he was still contracted to Canberra this year and got payed to sit on his ass? Or was he cut after 07?greeneyed wrote:Alan Rothery going to Central Comets in Queensland Cup.

Pretty sure he was contracted to the Scholars and not to the Raiders. A Canberra head may be able to elaborate.julian87 wrote:Am I right in thinking that he was still contracted to Canberra this year and got payed to sit on his ass? What a champ, one of my all time faves. How good was it him scoring 4 meat pies in 1 game. He seemed shocked that I asked for his autograph 1st player at the 25th anniversary, even asked if I knew who he was! I was nervous cos he's a legend.Question wrote:decent ??? understatement.greenraider7 wrote:My cousin Gary Coyne former Raiders Backrower now owns McDonalds Franchise in Gympie in Qld, and he gets free

Not sure how many of you guys remember Gary, he was a decent player with the Green Machine, he played origin for
Qld, played a few tests aswell, he scored 4 trys in a major preliminary final against Manly in 1991.
Gary Coyne goes without explanation.
Say gday' and thanks to him for me ..

Thanx for ya nice comments on Gary guys, i feel really proud that im related to him, if it wasnt for Gary i wouldnt
support the Mighty Raiders
He was in the Rugby League Week last yr, i think it was in early August edition 2007, i think it was the Legend Q and A
section.
Those 4 trys he scored i will rememeber forever, ive never seen a Backrower with such a shocked lok on his face, it
was great

I started watching rugby league in 1991 as a wide-eyed 7 year old enamored with Big Mal.greenraider7 wrote:Thanx for ya nice comments on Gary guys, i feel really proud that im related to him, if it wasnt for Gary i wouldnt

However my clearest, most earliest and resonating memory of the Raiders is Coyne scoring 4 tries against Manly in that semi-final.
I only ever saw the game once, but I still remember him scoring one off a quick-tap when Manly had their backs to him as they were either expecting the Raiders to take a kick at goal, or were simply too dejected to man up in time defensively.
Perhaps someone with a clearer memory of the match can remember what I'm talking about?
Oh and anyone who doesn't know Gary Coyne isn't deserving of the right to even access the GH.

We lived next door to Gary Coyne for a bunch of years in Calwell. Last time we saw him was when we visited him on the sunny coast or something. The day after he scored those 4 tries, he came over to my 11th bday party, all my mates were shocked. Tell him the Browns say hi!

Re: Ex Raiders... where are they now?
Gary Coyne was a favourite of a lot of Raiders fans. A very reliable and tough backrower who never did anything wrong.
He, Dean Lance and Ash Gilbert were a very under rated back row. Coyne and Gilbert used to wear tape around his head, Dean Lance head gear and Steve Walters had ears like dinner plates....and who can forget Sam Backo as prop!
Man we had a rough pack in those days.....
When you look back over the years, Raiders forwards have always been under rated. Maybe its due to the awesome backs we had, but those backs couldnt do their stuff if the pigs didnt win the middle. Guys like Coyne were the epitomy of the Canberra Raiders in their hey day. We owe him a debt.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Re: Ex Raiders... where are they now?
I know Tim Sheens has named Gary Coyne in the past as his favourite player to have coached. Don't quote me on the word 'favourite', but it was something along those lines e.g. gained the most pleasure from this player's success.

Cool - at least I can recognise George Washington, and know that the other half of the portrait belongs to Jebediah 'Hans Sprungfeld' Springfield.

The difference in age between certain supporters is very evident.
69, Michael < 20?

I remember the name.
But that is all.
I'm 23. I don't think its a big deal that his appearence is lost in my brain though. I was 6-7.

I didn't necessarily mean that you have to be able to pick him out of a police lineup, but if you were unaware of Coyne and his achievements then you need to bone up on your Raiders history.
I'm a month or so short of 25, which to be fair is probably the absolute cut-off point when it comes to the Raiders best ever forward to score 4 tries in a semi-final.

Re: Ex Raiders... where are they now?
Coyne scored 4 tries against Manly in 91, from memory it was a semi as well, he also represented Australia. He was a champion player who fitted in well in our champion team , he would of been one of the 1st picked. Great to watch , they dont make 2nd rowers like that anymore ,
Re: Ex Raiders... where are they now?
Gary Coyne...what a competitor,our mr perpetual motion.
The balding head, the tape round the ears,a foot shorter than back rowers like Sironen and Roberts, but jeez he had ticker.
Like the mighty lazo,he'd be as willing in the 80th as the first.
Definitely in my top ten favourite Raider players.
And good to see he is making a quid after footy.

FTR
Gary Coyne - 158 games ('86-'92), 28 tries, Qld Origin 11 games, Aust Rep 2 tests, Raiders most consistent - 87 and 89,
These blokes seem typical Seagulls fans to me
