Canberra Raiders legend Laurie Daley emerges as shock contender for Kiwis coach

Laurie Daley has emerged as a shock contender for the New Zealand Test coaching job. Sacked by the NSW Blues after losing last year's State of Origin series, the highly respected Daley looked like having a break from coaching this year.

But he is being pushed across the ditch to rescue the reputation of the Kiwis, which is in tatters after last year's disastrous World Cup campaign.

Forever Green: Where are they now? - David Shillington

What do you do for work now?

I am the Queensland manager for the Men of League Foundation these days.

What’s your favourite memory as a Raider?

I think playing semifinals football, particularly at home in Canberra. Obviously, the Raiders haven’t had a lot of success in finals footy for a long time so to be a part of that was pretty cool. With the home ground advantage, the whole town got behind us. A couple of times we went on those late runs where we won most of our games in the last eight or ten rounds to make the finals.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

I think a big part of Milford's problem is the added responsibilities Bennett has placed on him. Instead of focussing on his strengths as a runner and support player he is trying to add game manager and kicker to his repertoire and it isn't working IMO.

Agree. It’s like us giving that responsibility to Austin, it wouldn’t work.

No doubt Milford is a good player but I dont think he will be as good as many thought 3 years ago.
I agree he looks heavier and not as zippy on a consistent basis.

Im hoping he fails personally, he left us under dubious reasons...traitor.

Some leave and are welcomed back, like Fensom, loved the interview with him last night.

Milford isn't in the same class as dugan or Ferguson on the EDIT scale, but he is pretty close, good to see him playing crap, in a crap team. Hope they miss the 8. Suck it.

How Dave Taylor is turning life around at CQ Capras

Dave Taylor has rediscovered his love of the game, has become a leader of men and got himself a job as the former NRL star takes massive strides in transforming his life.

"Dave’s training ethic has been unbelievably good and he has also taken on a leadership role with us," Capras coach Kim Williams said. "He is the first one to talk in video sessions and in drink breaks before training and after training.

This week we catch up with former fullback Gary Belcher. Belcher, who also represented Queensland and Australia was an integral part of the Raiders Premiership winning sides in 1989 and 1990. Belcher made 148 appearances for the club while scoring 69 tries in the process.

“I do some media work with Crocmedia doing some radio. I might do a bit more work with Fox Sports but we’ll see what happens. I’ll think it’ll just be mainly radio now, so I still haven’t got a real job.”

Love the Badge! :D Alongside Daley he's one of my fave players of all time. It's easy to forget how good he was in that 1989-91 period.

I'm not old enough to have seen Langlands play, but Belcher was one of the best fullbacks I have ever seen. He had it all - he was a great defender, could kick goals, was positionally outstanding, had a brilliant running game and ball playing skills to boot. His impact on our club should never be understated.

There's another great Raider. **** I loved watching Josh Miller play. Was like seeing the second coming of Terry Regan, without the obvious mental instability.

It's a pity his madman style literally knocked him out of the game. He gave it absolutely everything he had when he was on the park. If all of our current squad played with the same attitude each week we'd be winning games by 30...until most of them got suspended or concussed that is.

This week we catch up with our former winger Steve Keir who played First Grade for the club between 1983 and 1984. His son, Dan represented the Raiders Under 20’s side the last two years and is now plying his trade for Mounties in the Jersey Flegg Cup.

Former NRL star Joel Monaghan to play large slice of season for Albury Thunder

FORMER NRL star Joel Monaghan is confident of playing at least half the Group Nine rugby league season with Albury Thunder.

Monaghan will move from Canberra to Melbourne in coming days with the 35-year-old likely to debut in the season opener against Brothers on April 14.

“Once I get to Melbourne I’ll know more, but I’m looking at playing the home games and hopefully a few more,” Monaghan said.

Forever Green: Where are they now? - Troy Thompson

This week we catch up with our former forward Troy Thompson who played for the club between 2001 and 2010.

What’s your favourite memory as a Raider?
There’s probably too many but it would have to be my debut. Just to play one game was pretty cool and my debut was against the Broncos up in Brisbane and I think it was the second last round of the 2001 season. We didn’t have a chance of making the finals and their team was full of Australian Internationals but we ended up beating them 36-6. It was unreal.

It was great playing with Laurie Daley in reflection to that now. We also played a couple of finals series there which was good. I played in the game in the snow in 2000, that was an interesting experience.
