Raiders player signing speculation
MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION
What this thread is for: It is for all the idle speculation and discussion about players people would like to sign for the Raiders. Substantiated stories about players the club is linked to: they will have their own threads, with links to credible sources.
People enjoy speculating about who the club should ideally sign, and then debating it, and that is what you'll find in this thread.. or unsubstantiated questions posed on radio talk back etc etc.
It is fun. But all threads of the nature: "Joe Blogs is off contract in 2020, wouldn't it be great to sign him" will be merged into this thread by the moderators.
Have fun speculating... but remember... it's a speculation thread!

Re: Raiders player signing speculation
With respect to all the people starting threads of this sort, we are getting a lot of complaints about how many there are. So if you have a thought on this... put it in this thread.
Moderators will merge any new threads that are simply idle speculation/desired signings etc, into this thread.
If there are genuine reports of the Raiders entering into talks with new players that is a different matter and feel free to start a new thread.

Villasanti retired last year due to chronic knee problems. He was contracted to Harelquins but never played and retired at the start of last year.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation
Kane Cleal wouldnt be a bad signing
Re: Raiders player signing speculation
hill, thaiday and cuthbertson would be nice, the others we don't need
raider 4 life
Re: Raiders player signing speculation
Where do these speculations come from?
Anyway of the list provided, I'd love Cuthbo and absolutely HATE John Morris coming over to the green side

Re: Raiders player signing speculation
Cletus Cleal couldn't even get a run at Souths, Cuthbo is in Manly's long term plans, Johnny Morris would be another hooker we don't need and the others are all pending retirements.jtraider wrote:Adam Cuthbertson (manly) , Sam Thaiday(broncos), Scott HILL (Harlequins), John MORRIS (Tigers), Kane CLEAL (Bulldogs),John SKANDALIS (Huddersfield), Richard Villasanti,

Brisbane tipped to sign Tigers backrower Te'o
Stuart Honeysett and Dan Koch | June 20, 2008
BEN TE'O informed Wests Tigers this week he will be moving on at the end of the season, just days after the New Zealand-born backrower failed to turn up and sign a new contract with the club.
Speculation is rife that Te'o will sign with Brisbane, the Tigers' opponents at Suncorp Stadium tonight, although it is understood St George Illawarra is still in the mix.
After falling out with former manager Darryl Mather, Te'o has been handling his own contract negotiations and is believed to have attracted interest from the Broncos, Dragons, Penrith, Newcastle and Canberra. The Tigers originally placed a deadline of June 8 on Te'o to accept their offer but withdrew it following intervention from coach Tim Sheens, who did not want to put additional pressure on the 21-year-old.
It is believed the Knights and Panthers pulled out of the race after Te'o informed both clubs that he intended to stay with the Tigers.
However, he failed to turn up and sign a new deal with the Tigers last week.
Although the Broncos have said they would be limited in what they can offer Te'o, it is believed he is keen to return to Brisbane having lived there and attended Keebra Park High School, the same stomping ground as the Tigers' five-eighth Benji Marshall.
There is a contract waiting for Te'o to sign in Brisbane but the deal is contingent on the club being able to off-load several players.
David Stagg, Joel Moon and Darius Boyd last month took up one-year options with Brisbane for 2009 but the Broncos have already indicated they would be prepared to release them if they found better offers from rival clubs.
Boyd appears likely to join St George Illawarra, although that could hinge on Dragons prop Jason Ryles joining the English Super League next season, while Moon has held talks with Canberra and also been offered to North Queensland.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation
I was a little shocked when I heard Rooney couldn't get a contract in Aus. I remember when I first joined the GH the speculation was that we had him in the bag. Ahh well, I guess when you look at our backline, there really isn't any room for him
Feel free to call me RickyRicky StickStick if you like. I will also accept Super Fui, King Brad, Kid Dynamite, Chocolate-Thunda... or Brad.

Well I'm glad we've had a crack at Te'eo at least.
F**k I hate Brisbane. Much like the Roosters, they get pretty much whoever they want, don't they.

Mate, I don't like the Broncos much either but I have a lot of respect for the way they are run. They are a very professional operation and have built such an excellent culture that players WANT to play for them. Even to the point of accepting less money.Canberra Milk wrote:Well I'm glad we've had a crack at Te'eo at least.

Rooster on the other hand have links to a number of powerbrokers in the NRL and also some cashed up board members. Money talks when they chase players.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation
plus scott hill is gunna retire i think heard he may head back to melbourne to do sort of coaching, if joel moon has had chats with the cowboys we will miss out on him, cause they need a 5/8, travis burns is up to ****, and the chance to play along side thurston would be hard to nock back, if brisbane sign Te'o, we may have to try keep neville.

Ironically the one player who would be worth getting off that list (Thaiday) is the one least likely to make an appearance in green. Ever. Let alone next season.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation
No thanks to Moon, hasnt done much even outside great players, and if did hit his straps with us then would be snapped back up by a Qld team next contract
I bow down to thee oh great Nickman, the wisest of the wise, your political adroitness is unsurpassed, your sagacity is unmatched, your wisdom shines through on this forum amongst us mere mortals as bright as your scalp under the light of a full moon, never shall I doubt your analytical prowess again. Re: Raiders player signing speculation
Can I just say...
Moon was crap against us, and crap again tonight- scored a try but was pretty dusty.
If we are signing him as a half, he has shown no direction of the team that I can see, and if we want him as 5/8 outside carney, then why? what does he offer over campese?
Also, we have a number of average centre's in the club now; purtell, graham, kelly, and up and coming boys fromm u20's.
I can only imagine from past experience that we will pay overs to get a young up and comer from Brisbane. (it was only this year we were paying $250k for N Smith)
So i ask why? I think we're just signing people for the sake of it...

Re: Raiders player signing speculation
we are signing people just so we can say we had a productive year on the player market. Every year there are fans demanding signings...and justifiably so...but when you are down to the dregs its probably best to just stick with what youve got. If we had added the signings of heighington, barrett, tolman (some, all or any of them), then those would have been decent signings. But we missed out and now the only people on the market are those who are not wanted/needed by other clubs.Beejay wrote:So i ask why? I think we're just signing people for the sake of it...

The Australian this morning has Moon signed by Auckland for 2009.
Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

What happened to chasing Rooney?,since no one else wants him, we could snare him at a bargain price
Re: Raiders player signing speculation
I have heard from a fairly reliable source that Brent Grose has been offered a contract by the club.
I really hope it is true as he is a much better fullback than what we have atm. If it happened, I'd be very, very happy.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation
To be honest I dont think the Raiders should be going out to sign any of them players.
i think your juniors are really starting to step up.
The only thing I think Canberra could use is a really top class damaning second rower and possibly a hooker. Outisde of that, you have a young side who are all improving, and I'd stick with them rather than taking rejects from other teams.
