Well that's an anticlimax. The damn Baton is carried for 380 odd days across dozens of countries... and they hand it to Beattie who passes on a pre prepared speech to Charles to drone out.

For the purpose of being a complete and cynical sarcastic **** on twitter that opening ceremony was fantastic.

Big shout out to channel 7 studios who apparently don't own an atlas, a globe or have google.

Why on earth do we have a giant whale in the stadium?! Didn't they work out they tried that for the Canberra 100th anniversary? And that was a massive fail?!

I do like this final song. Who is singing it? That seems to be it. Unfortunately they didn't blow up the whale.

Was pointless and went on for far too long

This stadium... isn't even finished. There's a whole end of it not covered with a grandstand.

Well that was considerably better than I expected.

Safe to say that my expectations were low. Very low. Very.

I expect that you will now be unable to leave your building for the next week and a half and there will be medical emergencies all over town you won't get to!

This has been a significant concern. Have some Plan Bs.

I sometimes don't get that many in a week, let alone two hours.

No idea yet if one thing in particular caused that

I actually quite liked that rendition of the anthem, for that occasion. It's not what you want before the GF or Origin, but when singing it to the rest of the world it kind of says, this is us, these are our people. I agree though, nothing will ever compare to the Julie Anthony/Human Nature version at the Sydney Games. You could never recapture the emotion of that event and how proud we all were that day.

Overall, on reflection, I think that they did a pretty good job last night. There was always going to be the cultural cringe stuff - always is with these events. I thought that it was reasonably well balanced though.

I went to the Triathlon today, and it was great. The best part was actuality seeing some of the battlers that would never get a run at the Olympics or world champs compete. Chris Walker from Gibraltar was my highlight. Old mate was just ecstatic to be there.
