Manuka set for $100m upgrade

Post by -TW- »

@TimGavel: Full details of a proposed 100 million $ upgrade of Manuka Oval to be released tomorrow . If it goes ahead capacity would increase to 20k.

Apparently will have a sizeable portion of private investment as well

It's a suburb, not a place for a major sports stadium. It's a village green.

From the perspective of cricket, if the ACT wants to keep regular international games it needs international standard facilities

Yeah I really don't like the idea of that with the SCG 3 hours up the road.

It's looking like Manuka will become a regular stop for touring sides for test cricket.

They'd be better off developing a new Canberra Stadium, at least it'd regularly be used.

CA may be thinking of entering a ACT side into Sheffield Shield or at least ODD cricket.

Remember the Cosmos....good times.

Manuka would get some use if that were to happen, not a lot but some.

This development is likely dependent on taking surrounding land for hotel, apartments and commercial developments. We shall see how much at some stage, I guess and how invasive it is.

Last I heard, they were getting jack of Hobart as a location. Cant remember why, and so Canberra was being raised as an alternate destination. However, our facilities aren't up to scratch. Need a bigger capacity more than anything else.

If they can get a team in the big bash and a commitment from CA for regular international matches coupled with a few GWS games per year then their is no reason not to go ahead with it.

I don't think they'd need to increase seating capacity for Sheffield Shield.

It would be good if they could make it somehow configurable to accommodate a square ground but still be close to the action.

Should be doable with that sort of cash.

20,000 seat stadium for all codes would be awesome and Manuka is such a great venue. Pubs and clubs nearby, plenty of parking.

You only need about 2 dozen seats for the public at Shield games

You could play it at Rivett Oval.

And so it should, how many cricketing nations don't play major matches in their capital?
