2014 FIFA World Cup *tipping comp now open*

Post by Raider47 »

Biggest event on the planet deserves its own thread. Only days away... :thumbsup

I'm leaving on Monday for Sao Paulo where I'm following Australia around. Hoping for some surprises from the Socceroos. Young team, who will hopefully cause some havoc in the coming years.

Nonetheless a football feast over the next 6 weeks. :D

****? Biggest event on the planet - did you not see the rugby league World Cup?

I'm kidding, I can't wait for it. The first few days overlap with exams but after that I'm pretty well free to catch as much of it as I can. Have fun in Brazil!

Pretty sure GE will just argue that the TV viewer-ship is greater.

Mungo's prefer to stay in and watch league, rather than purchasing tickets, going to the game, being active supporters and buying memberships and all those other things that supporters do for every other code of football worldwide.

I don't follow soccer, but I admit I jump on the bandwagon in a big way every time the WC rolls around. John Aloisi's penalty against Uruguay is my favorite sporting moment and the penalty Italy got against Australia is my worst.

Easily the best competition on earth with so many competitive teams.

Shame the times aren't that great, but I'll try watch as many games as possible.

I enjoy watching the Aussies play , I played the game for 20 odd years but Im not a huge fan of it as a spectator . Plus on the local scene I don't support a team.

Anyway I'll watch and cheer the Aussies on.

When and what time are the games on?

Oh dumb is SBS an HD channel? Where'd you get that pic from? Newspaper? I tried to print one off foxsports.com.au and it was disgustingly bad. So cluttered.

This site lets ya change it to your timezone so I'll probably use this on my phone http://m.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/index.html

Josh Kennedy and Tom Rogic miss Socceroos' World Cup squad

Socceroo veteran Josh Kennedy and promising young midfielder Tom Rogic have lost their battle with ongoing injury problems and been axed from the squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as coach Ange Postecoglou listened to the dictates of prudence and pragmatism rather than imagination and sentiment.

Young goalkeeper Mark Birighitti and another Socceroo veteran (like Kennedy) of the 2006 and 2010 World Cup campaigns, Luke Wilkshire, are the other two players left out.

Postecoglou has had to make the toughest call of his short international coaching career in deciding who to leave out of the final 23-man party. He has opted for to look to the future rather than concern himself with idealism and sentiment, especially in the case of Rogic, who many believe to be the most promising player of his generation.

I heard from someone in the know that Rogic actually made the call himself. It doesn't seem to be reported that way so far.

We're in deep, deep ****.

I'll tell you one thing i'm absolutely certain of. I'd prefer my country is represented at the World Cup than not. I've read a lot of commentary from people over the past few months absolutely slamming the Socceroos and how they'll go. That might be the case as we're in a rebuilding phase and have a horrendous draw but people seem to have forgotten that prior to 2006 where we were absolutely spoiled, it was a dream just to go. Now we've got that and football fans in this country that were rejoicing 8 years ago at having a place in Germany are now almost laughing at them and trying to get the uppercut in early rather than getting around them. I'm going to enjoy it and get right behind them as usual. When they walk out against Chile in that yellow shirt and they line up for the anthem the goosebumps will be there, as they were in 1997 at the MCG when I saw them go out by away goals rule to Iran, or Uruguay 4 years later, and of course Uruguay in Sydney 4 years after that. This is the biggest sporting event on earth, virtually every country in the world tries to make it. To be 1 of 32 is an achievement in itself, and when the whistle blows on the 14th of June it is game on regardless of who's on the pitch. C'mon boys.
We continue to **** about with blokes that are part of some fraternity. It's infuriating.

God damn it. I just compared the Socceroos schedule to my exam timetable for the first time. I have an exam at the same time as their first game. Their second game is on the morning of another exam (I also have an exam the next day on my birthday). And their last game is on the morning of my last exam. So there's a good chance I won't get to watch any of their games live.

Australia definitely doing better than they did against South Africa.

Matt Ryan is really taking the playing out from the back to a new level, he was at the halfway line for one corner
