Handy backup for Brees after losing Bridgewater. Winston will also get to learn behind one of the smartest QBs in the game. I imagine a 1 year deal is to leave the door open for a starter's contract beyond next season. Whether its with Saints or another team is to be determined.
Agreed

Reading up on Philly draftees. It's seems they are looking to convert another QB to WR. They did it with Piggys boi Ward, now Khalil Tate Arizona Wildcat, is on the same path apparently.

Wonder if Hurts is too?!? .... :roflmao :P

Somewhat related to both topics above, Saints just signed Taysom Hill for 2 years at $21m and $16m guaranteed. Obviously putting a high value on having the gadget play QB. Pheagles must be looking at the same with Hurts and making a serious commitment to it by spending a high draft pick.

Interesting that they still signed Jamison. That's a lot of coin into a gadget guy.

My dude, Tate is an UDFA. He's EXTREMELY unlikely to be anything but a camp body (if they even have camp this year)... that's a wild swing

They picked Hill up off waivers too. Discarded from a practice to $16m payday in 2 years.

I think that's exactly what it is
I heard on the Ringer NFL pod today, Lurie tells anyone who will listen the Eagles aim to is to have an NFL calibre QB as their back up, that's how they value it.
Pederson has spoken extensively about how the Saints use Hill and that they'll explore it.
Our QB coach Press Taylor has spoken openly about how he thinks the next iteration of offensive innovation is having multiple players who can pass on the field at the same time.

The eagles, right or wrong, feel like with Hurts they have a player they'll develop into a high level NFL QB, that is their back up, who can provide something in specialist packages and could be a valuable trade asset. I know @the bone doesnt think that's possible, but the Eagles have gotten a ton of value over the years doing this, NE have done it, the Saints and GB value trying to do it.

And no one is giving up major assets for Hurts now, but in 12 months time if he looks legit? Who knows. I know Bone wants to pretend Bradford was something he wasnt, but the eagles got a first for a broken down Sam Bradford who couldnt throw down the field because he was mechanically compromised. Teams do dumb ****, ask the NIners who got picks twice in 3 years for moving back 1 spot so teams could come up to take players they were taking, ask the Cardinals who got out of the DJ contract, got Hopkins back and didnt even have to give up their first to do, or ask Chase Daniel's who managed to earn nearly 35mil in his career for 218 passing attempts

Again, it's not the pick i'd have made. I think the eagles should be trying to win now. But certainly i can see why they made the pick.
Also a point made on the Ringer NFL pod... fans always scream about teams taking BPA, GM's always want to do it, few do, and this is why... this is what BPA looks like. And fans actually **** hate it

When you say give up major assets for him, you mean like a 2nd round draft pick? :)

The Winston to Saints thing is interesting
It's widely speculated that Drew Brees almost walked away this past season for his media deal and that this coming year is his last for sure.

Obviously Winston has rare arm talent and if you could fix his decision making and get him to get the ball out a bit quicker, he could be a very good starting NFL QB... I'll be curious about what happens post this season there if Brees retires... is the the Taysom Hill show as Sean Payton would have us all believe right now, or does Jamies do enough to cinvince the Saints they can work with him.

That'll be very fascinating to see.

That'd be a hell of a story
Carson Wentz in a pseudo NFC East championship game, as a heavy underdog, against Dallas. And he wins the game when his best reciever is an UDFA college QB converted to WR. Despite Dallas having an all star offensive line up.

Can you even imagine something that crazy?

This is a big year for him. The back injury has been reoccurring and a problem, but with Peters gone and Big V gone, and Dillard stepping into the LT role, the spot for our swing tackle spot is open

I think this is the year he'll get some real NFL playing time. If Lane or Dillard go down (or Dillard struggles) i think he'll be the next cab off the ranks. Im pretty pumped to see him

Im loathe to do it but this discussion has played out to show exactly why i feel compelled to. The level of criticism the pick has gotten and continues to get is absurd and ignores the reasons the pick was made.

If you dont like Hurts as a player, then i get panning the pick. That's not what's going on, the pick is being panned because... well, it's a QB and Philly already have one. That's it! That's the reason. Not because the player, not the value, not some medical issues or off the field issues... just that a team with a QB drafted a super versatile QB with a late second round pick.

And three of the smartest analysts in football - Gregg Rosenthal, Evan Silva and Warren Sharp have all supported the pick.

Legit question. In an ideal scenario what major asset do you see him being worth in 12 months.
In the next 12 months... ideal scenario being that Hurts gets a pre season, and plays at a pretty high level in it... i could see a scenario where the Jags look like trash with Minshew under centre, they've got a malcontent in Yannick Ngakoue creating problems in their locker room, they're going to lose him in FA for nothing this time next year... i could see a trade that gets Ngakoue to Philly for Hurts... again thats in an absolute ideal situation where he's been given the chance to play and plays well

If the plan is to flip him, they eagles themselves are probably thinking 2022 and beyond. But again, this is the NFL and if the eagles are right about him, and they develop him into a quality starting NFL player (so top 20 QB) then they're going to get better than 2nd for him at some point. If he sucks, they'll get nothing from him, and they'll be in the same boat as 60% of other teams who drafted a 2nd round pick who busted

Related topic. What's the status with Mailata? I know he's been slowed by back issues.

Im pretty pumped to see him
Is this his last year as a bonus slot on the practice squad for the International program?
He wasnt involved in the bonus slots for PS with that program, as he was on the active roster
But yeah you only get a year on that, then you gotta make a call.

I think given the limited scope of this years off season, he'll at least start the year as the eagles swing tackle... so thats pretty cool. Im torn because i really want to see him play but as the swing tackle if he plays it means either Dillard or Johnson are hurt, or Dillard sucks
Which would not be ideal

If he turns out to be good, the eagles can move him for a future first.
No one is giving up major assets for Hurts now, but in 12 months time if he looks legit? Who knows

Major assets isnt a 1st. Christ man. Those were from two entirely different posts. And i had the caveat that if he turns out to be good.
Jesus man, work on your comprehension

So in short a major asset with be another high quality NFL starter rather than a draft pick.

Potentially. Or maybe he's involved in a package to get something or someone. I dont know.

What i do know is the Eagles believe they can develop him into a quality NFL starter, and if they're right, his value as an NFL calibre starting QB will be higher than a 2nd round pick.
If they're wrong, and he's just a good NFL back up... well they got a cost controlled good NFL back up QB for a 2nd round pick, which isn't an A+ pick, but it's a solid C
If they're REALLY wrong, and he just sucks ****... they lost a 2nd round pick, along with 60% of the league

I guess what im saying is, the only downside to this is opportunity loss to use that pick on another player, and the reason i was annoyed was i wanted them to grab more WRs... well they got another 3 in the draft (including the trade for Goodwin), so im ok with that.

What im not and may never be OK with, unless he **** sucks is not moving heaven and earth to get CeeDee Lamb

Putting a lot of effort into something you're loathe to do. Have to admire the commitment. :cmon

The valid criticism has not been so much about drafting a backup QB but more about the price paid. Pretty much everybody projected Hurts as a Day 3 pick, even those smart analysts you've mentioned. The pick is viewed as both a reach and a low positional need. Combination of those factors will always generate a negative reaction and it gets a lot more focus in a relatively dull draft.

I've seen you quote that figure of 60% failure with 2nd round picks a number of times. Where does that come from?

Without bothering to go back all over the discussion, I don’t think there has actually been a huge level of criticism of the pick from Matt, NR or I. Yeah we’ve made a few jokes and have enjoying riling you up, but for the most part, our reaction was of surprise and confusion, as none of us were expecting the pick or thought it aligned with our sense of what their strategy should be. Most of our criticism has been about your justification of the pick, and how you’ve gone from saying Howie should be sacked if it doesn’t help them win this year, to posts upon posts of defending the pick despite being loathe to do so. As I wrote in an earlier post, this is classic fan behaviour, and despite your denial, you Pigman are also subject to fan bias the same as every other sports fan in the world.

In all seriousness, a few non-trolling opinions about the pick:
> as I said, I’m surprised they spent a second rounder on a back up QB. For a team that can win now, I thought they would invest in immediate help (i.e. someone that would have a much higher snap count)
> kudus to the eagles for putting such a high value on a backup QB. It certainly helped them in them in Jan-18
> we’ve heard a lot of comparisons to Taysom Hill... but it’s such a ridiculous comparison IMO. Taysom Hill was (and is, assuming Winston signs) QB3 on the Saints depth chart. The eagles are not going to let their backup QB take the hits that Hill does by playing H back, tight end, special teams etc. A much better comparison would be what the Ravens did with Jackson and Flacco, except without the intention of replacing Wentz with Hurts. Which leads me to my next point...
> anyone thinking that the plan is for Hurts to replace Wentz has no idea. Max Kellerman was arguing this point on first take this afternoon, and I know it’s your job to come up with controversial opinions, but dude shut up
> I actually feel a bit sorry for Hurts in this. Yeah he’ll be part of this self styled “QB factory”, but compare his situation to Jacob Eason, who gets to sit behind Rivers for a year and compete for a starting job in 2021

I guess that was my point. The amount of effort in justifying the pick to us does not come across as somebody who is loathe to defend it. We have questioned the logic but to suggest that "The level of criticism the pick has gotten and continues to get is absurd" is a bit of a stretch.
