It's not a massive lead. Any 4th innings chase is challenging.

Another reason to pick Starc is that he is usually very good at cleaning up the tail. Play cut short due to poor light. Smith looks to be maintaining his first innings form. Hopefully the coaches will get to Head and Wade and Paine and tell them that batting time and accumulating runs in support of Smith is vital for the team.

Bancroft just doesn't look a Test player. After Starc is selected, I hope that Joe Burns is given the nod and 'Sandy' Bancroft is given the flick.

35 run lead with 7 in the shed with 2 full days to play.

If Smith, Head, Wade and Paine push ahead and we get contributions from all the bowlers I reckon we are in a fair position.

Chasing 200-250 would be tough for the soap dodgers..

I don't think it's a stretch to think Siddle over either of Starc or Hazelwood was dumb. BUT... Starc in swinging English conditions?!? Is CRAZY! Most of us said that before the team was selected, and more so when both were left out.

As for the batsmen...
Bancroft won his spot back. Hasn't done anything in this Test, but I doubt he is dropped for the 2nd. Don't forget, his partner hasn't done anything either.

That 40 from Uzi was nice, but needed to be a 50+++ score. Once in, you have to go on.

I hope Head, Wade and Paine can all play decent innings. If all 3 made 30+ (in Heads case, 30 more) tomorrow, in partnerships with Smith, the Poms will be chasing 250ish on day 5.

Good knock from Head, but he loves getting a start and departing with a loose shot.

Blessing that his innings was interrupted by stumps and he got a start both yesterday and today lol

I'll join the no ball chorus. Poor Head.

Wade at least seems to have come out with intent.

I think we need to give them at least 250 to chase. I wouldn't be comfortable under that, and we're still a fair way off.

Way on top now.

Great work from SSmith and MWade.

Only 2 possible outcomes now..AUS win or a draw.

The Poms know they're in a contest now...

They showed the split shot, and he drags the side of his boot.

Guys, don't forget, the Poms have been down a 1st class bowler since over 7or 8 of the Test. No Anderson has been a big factor.

That said, Smith IS the best since Bradman. He avges 140 in his last 10 Ashes Tests. That's ridiculous!

Wade just went a long way to proving the critics wrong. Great countering knock. From ball 1 he looked like the guy that has plundered runs here all summer.

Paine needs to find ways to covert a score though. Chasing quick-ish runs or not.
