Shire is taking on the world

THE battlelines are drawn for the local version of War of the Worlds.

A group of friends has decided to make the rivalry between the Shire and St George area an international event when they stage a Shire vs Rest of the World cricket match on Australia Day at Woolaware Oval.

The Shire team is being captained by options trader Ryan Thompson and the Rest of the World team by his girlfriend Sarah Jane Becroft who lives in the St George area.

The friends started the competition 3 years ago as the Shire vs St George. Since then some of the St George tem have moved out of the area so their team name has been changed to Rest of the World.

A lot is riding on the outcome. “After the match the winner has the right to make fun of the losing team for the rest of the year” Sarah Jane said.

Ryan said the match is all in fun but there is a lot of pride in defending the reputation of the Shire.

**************

Oh boy I hope the Shire killed them. Anyone here not going for the Shire?

By going against me remember you are supporting Tonio and possibly Stu. Who are now my enemies after hearing of this cricket match.

Can’t wait till *'s Leader to see if we (The Shire) won. 8)

Matthew Hayden is terribly out of form - i reckon the best possible opening pair at the moment would be Gilchrist and Clarke.

and how bad is Andrew Symonds going?? the guy needs to be dropped. not only is he getting low scores, he looks awful in getting them too. and i've never rated his bowling.

nice team, but i'm not big on Katich. i'd bring back Bevo, whack him in at no.6. also, i can't for the life of me understand why Justin Langer's not in contention for the one day side.

True That.... I would happily slip Langer into the team! I'd love to have Bevo back but its not going to happen!

Martyn was out of form for a fair while there, but wasn't dropped 'cos other guys around him, such as Ponting and Hayden, were in stellar form. it didn't really matter that our no.4 batsman was slightly out of form.

he was more than "slighty out of form"
he was in piss poor form and should of been dropped 100 times over IMO

he wasn't that bad - look at the stats. he got plenty of starts just never went on with them.

Yes Martyn was out of form but look at him now. IMO the best player of 04. Without a doubt.. 69, HAyden deserves to be dropped aswell. Exactly the same situation. Once critics and the like jump on someones back its hard to get back on track. Martyn is there now, has worked hard and deserves to be there. Keep going strong champ!

actually now i think about it, i'd have Kasper in there somewhere, too. this'd be my team:

1. Gilchrist
2. Hayden
3. Ponting
4. Martyn
5. Lehmann
6. Clarke
7. Hogg
8. Lee
9. Gillespie
10. Kasprowicz
11. McGrath

i ended up going with Haydos - i think he's better than Katich. plus, with the strength of our batting line up and a tail that can wag, i dont believe we need an all rounder such as Watson. why not use our strengths and have a 5 pronged bowling attack?

3/79 - Symonds is going great guns! i thought Kasper was extremely unlucky not to make the team, though. i'm very confident he would have and could have contributed much more to the team than Shane Watson.

gee Symonds looks awesome when in form and striking the ball well. i reckon these two will put on a partnership of at least 100. i'm tipping a century from one of them, probably Symonds.

Symonds is saving himself at the absolute 11th hour, no way was he going to NZ IMO.

I hope Kat makes some runs.

Good call considering I don't think you would have had him in the team after your comments in the other thread ;)

i'm tired of Katich and Watson. quite simply, they're not up to international standard. a bit like Symonds before he got that 150 or so against Pakistan in the World Cup. Symonds was a rare case of someone **** turning excellent - i doubt htis will happen with Katich. Watson, possibly, but i can't see it happening any time soon, although his bowling has improved a lot.

put Langer or Haydos down the order - they may be opners, but they're still batsmen, i'm sure they could bat well anywhere in the order.

I think the easy option would be drop Katich, Clarke go down the order again, and reinstate Hayden.
