It wasn’t quick though. For us it’s been a long slow descent into hell.

Re: The Cricket Thread
You know things are seriously ****, when Mark Latham starts making good sense:
“STANDARD MEDIA PATTERN:
1. massively exaggerate the importance of the story
2. drive a young man and his family to the point of despair
3. lead the pious hand-wringing, hoping he's okay and "resurrected" (so they can do it to him again).
On Twitter, the Channel 9 journalist Chris Uhlmann has compared Steve Smith's situation to the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ - yet another media over-reach in the ball-tampering story, this time trivialising the meaning of Easter.
Yes, the Australian players cheated, in a manner not uncommon in international cricket. They did the wrong thing and deserved a suspension from the game. But now we can see the real-life consequences of the media's hyperbole in beating up this story (scuffing up a cricket ball).
Just about every Australian media figure is now talking of how much they care about Steve Smith and hoping he makes a successful comeback.
How do these people sleep at night? They pile the pressure on the young man, break him (as we saw at last night's press conference) and then they want to be the ones to help him pick up the pieces (for more ratings glory). It's sickening to watch this pattern unfold, time after time.”

Re: The Cricket Thread
I was pretty disgusted by what took place.
- Premeditated plan to cheat.
- Got found out and tried to conceal the evidence.
- When confronted by the officials they concocted a new lie to explain it (the sunglass cloth explanation).
- realised they had been busted in camera so came clean in the post match presser.....but still lied saying it was sticky tape when it was sand paper.
The whole saga showed that these people were not fit to represent and lead their country in cricket. ICC sanctions are pathetic for incidents like this so I was all for CA standing them down from National duties.
9-12 months I thought was harsh but reasonable. Basically saying they will sit out next season. What I totally disagree with is the ban flowing through to domestic cricket. OK to say they can’t represent their country but what value is there is stopping them playing Sheffield Sheild or the domestic limited overs matches? They still be allowed to play the game, just taken down a level.
The other thing that **** me is the media over blowing it. There was outrage from within the cricket community to begin with and justifiably so. Since it’s been a lot of pathetic bandwagon jumping by people who didn’t even know Australia were playing a test series in SA.

There's no way Malcolm Turnbull knew we were playing in South Africa.
Then to come out and condone sledging after what goes on during every question time just topped it off.
Now another person who should STFU in Barnaby Joyce is chirping away.

Re: The Cricket Thread
- premidated plan to cheat ... No one just goes rogue and decides to take the entire bowling innings into their own hands and tamper with the ball. It’s all premeditated to a degree. Faf Du Plessis didn’t accdidently bring an excess supply of mints onto the field and think to himself “gee rather then let these melt in the hot sun, I might find another use for them”
- bloke panicked under pressure. Highly normal reaction for someone caught cheating.
- then admitted fault post match
As a lifelong cricketer, the word “disgusted” never entered my thought process regarding the whole thing.... until I saw the media/public reaction. Which I think can be fairly described as disgusting in itself.
The ICC’s ban is a demonstration of a thorough understanding of where ball tampering sits in the game of cricket.

Re: The Cricket Thread
Like the changes, Smith and Warner have struggled of late anyways and I personally like Payne and should do well as captain.

Shouldn't they have been farmed out to AM by now.

Did I mention how I love to have conversations with myself.
Imagine my surprise, PJ MIA to start the test match.

Re: The Cricket Thread
Very poor prep by Warner's advisors. May as well have published a written statement and not said a word. Now speculation will increase about who else may have been involved.
Came across as Warner accepting responsibility but not fully admitting guilt.

To be honest, none of them have any insight to the actual events... Warner copping it for not answering, just following the lead of the other two

Re: The Cricket Thread
Be happy if we never see Warner in an Australian cap again. Conversely I hope we see Smith and Bancroft back better than ever after next season. Just need CA to realise a total ban is wrong and let them play domestic cricket.

Wouldn't be surprised to see an appeal against the ban, from Warner in particular.

Hey Azza,
I get the vibe Warners ban would not be overturned.
And righty so.

I agree... but I'm just saying, wouldn't surprise me to see him appeal it (which is why he may have avoided certain questions today).

Re: The Cricket Thread
Fact- He's been named as the main instigator, it's part of his punishment. CA already know how deep he's involved, that won't change.
I expect all 3 to appeal...why not right..nothing to lose..plenty to gain.
But they'll respond to DWarner with a firm NO...surely. He's a cancer on this team.
Also..can someone tell me why Starkers ain't playing in Joburg..Warner has something to do with this..I'll bet my lawnmower on it..

Re: The Cricket Thread
But he’s accepted responsibility for his part in what took place on the 3rd day of the test. I know cuz he said it 5 times. Exactly what his part was and what specifically took place I don’t know as he wouldn’t elaborate.
Seriously why bother calling a press conference if you’re not going to say anythin?

Re: The Cricket Thread
Absolutely agree.
We need to walk away with at least a draw. A win would even be better but..
We need Renshaw and Burns to bat out the rest of the game if needed.
I don't care for they both hit 100s off 8mil balls, just dig in and fight ****.
BTW..Warner is so yesterday..he won't be back.
