The bowling in the first test match clearly papered over the cracks with the batting . Unless smith and labu find form quickly we are in big trouble

Dud call I reckon. Nothing on video or hot spot. Snicko showed some noise but multiples spikes. And edge is generally a single spike. Not enough evidence to overturn the call IMO.

Other than Warner coming back and Smith and Labu finding their form I can't figure out any solution to the batting woes. The gap between our best 3 bats and the other 3 is massive. Head and Burns are massive issues, they just aren't up to test standard.

Wade at #5> Wade opening. Solves the Head issue.

Green settling in.

Pucjovski getting a shot, may solve the Wade just digging in without ever expanding issue.

Warner as you've said, allows everyone else a bit more room to flourish.

So yeah Warner and then it's incremental improvemens like Wade in his correct spot and a couple of young players settling in that do the rest. Smith will find runs again. Gotta say I just find Labuschange an incredibly annoying character- can't quite trust a grown man whose schtick is being a sidekick/impression of another bloke.

Maybe but Labu has shown he can bat, as annoying as he might be. Relying on young players in a high pressure series to perform is a fairly tall order, so I'm not assuming guys like Pucovski will immediately come in and set the world on fire - just like Green.

My issues are with Wade, Head and Burns. Wade is the best of the 3 but even he is getting out far too often after getting good starts IMO. Agree however that he's better down the order than opening.

Right now it's reasonable to claim their bowlers are superior to our batsmen. That includes Smith and Labuschagne on current form.

Paine got dudded IMO. Cant see any reason to suggest a nic.

Warner for Burns is a no brainer.

The Q is, what to do with Head? He doesn't look uncomfortable at this level, but doesn't look like prospering either. The Q is, is that the Indian attack? Or Head himself?
His 1st class avg is a tick under 40, while his Test avg a tick over. IMO we are getting what Head is. So, do u drop a guy who consistently avgs 40? Its not that long ago we begged for a guy avging 40 to be in the Test team (BTW, Burns avgs 39 and Wade 41 in 1st class).

Here are the options as I see it:
SMarsh 42 1st class, 34 Test.
Khawaja 42 1st class, 40 Test.
Henriques 36 1st class, 23 Test.
Harris 39 1st class, 24 Test.
Maddinson 40 1st class, 7 Test.
Whiteman 36 1st class.
Carey 34 1st class, 36 ODI.

*Patterson 40 1st class, 144 Test.*
WOOOOOOOOW. Yet has disappeared.

Pucovski 54.5 1st class. His injury woes are an issue, but, what more does he need to do?

IMO, there are only 4 options to replace Head, Marsh, Khawaja, Patterson and Pucovski.
Marsh and Khawaja aren't really worth anything avg wise, in fact Heads Test record is better than Marsh.
You can't bank on Pattersons Test avg, but 1st class is the same too, not to mention, where has he disappeared too?
So, Pucovski is the man, but do u open him, move Wade back down? Or, risk 2 rookies in the middle order? I think you need to split them, so Wade to 5.

Khawaja is a ready made test batsman plus has Shield runs under his belt this year. Pointless bringing in a failed test batsman for another go when you have a successful one in form and available.

That said none of them would justify dropping Head to bring in. While Head might be frustrating at least he's contributing.

Whilst you can’t argue Khawaja was in form, the last shield game was 50odd days ago. Bringing Warner in for Burns can go along way towards fixing our batting line up.

My post was mainly responding to the discussion Matt started around Head's placr in the team. We're working on the assumption that Warner replaces Burns. If Warner remains unavailable then the discussion changes.

Aussies continue to get the wobbles in the 40s. Ironically the only ones to pass 50 this series are Paine and Burns
