Competitive total by the Aussies but the bowling of Coulter-Nile and Stoinis was well off the pace. Stoinis one over for 22 runs after Coulter-Nile went for 39 off 3. Kohli the difference with the bat. 61 runs off 41 balls faced says it all really.

Joe Burns getting a few runs vs the Vics on a green deck. Siddle, Tremain, Pattinson, Holland not a bad attack either. Could be in line for a recall if Aussies struggle against India.

The Test side's results this shield round so far:
1. Aaron Finch - 50 (batted at 3)
2. Marcus Harris - 2
3. Usman Khawaja - 41
4. Shaun Marsh - yet to bat
5. Peter Handscomb - 81
6. Mitchell Marsh - 0/58 from 15
7. Tim Paine (c) - 16 (Worth noting, the Tasmanians have 4 keepers in their top 7, at 3, 4, 6 and 7. Doran, the youngest bats 4. All made more than Paine)
8. Pat Cummins - DNP
9. Mitchell Starc - DNP
10. Josh Hazlewood - DNP
11. Nathan Lyon - 3

12. Travis Head - yet to bat
13. Chris Tremain - 9 and 2/20 from 7*
14. Peter Siddle - 1

#Joe Burns - 71
#Matt Renshaw - 2
#Glen Maxwell - 0
#Kurtis 'forgotten man' Patterson - 107
#Marcus Stonis - 0/39 from 13

At least there are a few runs in that top 6, but not too convincing TBH.

They’ve picked arguably the best 11 from the squad. Surprising.

I can understand them wanting Finch to open with Warner out and I hope it works but I’m just worried by it. I also think Renshaw and Maxwell have a stronger case than Travis Head. Head has only scored 7 centuries in 70 odd first class games, many at Adelaide. His conversion rate is horrendous. But he’s a real CA project player, much like Peter Siddle was 12 years ago.

Its Australia. Of course you bat if you win the toss.
Hell... cricket pretty well anywhere, if you win the toss these days you bat.

At least the past 3 season we have picked an in form debutant to open the batting. Renshaw, Bancroft now Harris. So, at least the selection criteria works here. Though, having heard Renshaw demolished a 1st grade team for 300+ perhaps overlooking him was a mistake. Only time will tell.

Finch has always had the talent. We have seen it in short form cricket. However, as we have seen in his career, his 'staying power' and/or 'powers of concentration' stink. So, he has never been a success in the longer formats. He is a good slip fielder and an experienced head. We need both in this team ATM.

I like Head, but agree with you. The question is, is he player who wastes his talents? OR Is he exactly what his career suggest, a good state player who is on the fringe of international status? At least he is playing in Adelaide where is record is very good. Id have picked Maxy, but he is on the nose at CA for some reason.

Im also a little surprised that Stonis's success in the shorter format hasnt at least elevated him to the top 14-15 squad players at Test level. Thats how MMarsh got his rise to fame after all.

Aussie Bowlers well on top due to some top catching. The Uzi catch is sensational. Sometimes they just stick and this time it did. Pardon the pun but Uzi is a gun. The bowling has been about pressure and mostly they have stuck to the plan. Very hot day so they will be hoping to clear the remaining 4 Indians up, as soon as possible after tea.
