Saw the latest Star Wars. Came out of the cinema feeling a little empty. I can only put it down to the story not being that compelling. I don't believe this is because of the premise. More the way it was delivered. I feel a potential great instalment of the franchise was spoiled by some clumsy script writing, directing and editing.

I think a lot had to do with Fin's pointless side adventure with a new randomly introduced character. It added too much unnecessary fat to the middle of the movie and affected the flow of the main plot. It was like they worked out the key story line then realised they didn't have anything for Fin to do so put this in as an afterthought.

A few other things I found annoying but this is more personal taste than a reflection on the movie.

There was a few minor tweaks they could have made to make it AMAZING.

Like you know who not being saved in the most obscene way
And by having that thing in the Finn storyline being a thing

And if what should have happened happened in Snoke’s throne room, or if they went totally off script and did the thing I wanted them to do in that scene too

This is getting hard without spoiling hahah

Everyone who hasn’t seen it yet needs to gtfo

I'm in the middle of watching "A Christmas Prince" on Netflix. It's horrific, it's compelling, I can't look away. It is every Christmas and minor European royalty movie all wrapped up in one. Every cliche is on track to be used. And I somehow love it!

DO NOT **** READ IF YOU HAVENT SEEN THE LAST JEDI

YOU STILL HERE? **** OFF

Alright, you're on your own...

Really **** hated the way they save Leia with that scene where she forced her way back to the door. I mean i'll let a lot of **** go but that was obscene and kind of ruined the whole film for me. If you werent going to kill her off, then dont and not do that scene. I really hated that.
I think the storyline would have worked way better if the code breaker from Casino planet was actually THE guy and helped the achieve the goal, it would have meant something then. Without it, we just had, as you said, a shoehorned love story that made no sense and had no set up, and a total and complete waste of time

I think one of two things with Rey and Ren could have been super cool... If they literally switched sides... Snoke convinced Rey to turn and Ren went back to the light... that would have made **** really interesting... but also, that moment when Ren asked Rey not to save the fleet and let it all burn... THAT I wanted to see, and fit in perfectly with Luke's mentality. Like it would have been a cool place to be to have this series basically be the death of the sith/jedi, and have Rey and Ren realise it all needed to go for the galaxy to just BE.

I thought Phasma's death and Snoke's death weren't really significant enough, they wasted those moments a little bit (Snoke's less obviously). And at the end of the day, we're basically exactly where we left off. We didnt really move anywhere

Also this is just me being a fan, instead of Luke hologram'ing in to save the day, i would have LOST MY **** MIND to see Luke and R2 in an X-wing swing down and shoot the **** out of the Empire's door breaker and save the day a little bit, but in hindsight i think they nailed that.
Poe and Finn were basically trashed in this film, but i think the next Ep is going to be awesome and really focus on the Rey-Ren thing

That's my thoughts. I had a few of them :lol:

That's my thoughts. I had a few of them :lol:
Yep, on the Leia floating through space. That was a total garbage concept and looked dodgy too. Typical of the clumsy writing/directing I alluded to that held the movie back. There scene added nothing to the story whatsoever. Taking Leia out of action and being replaced by a purple haired Laura Dern was also unnecessary. They had already established the antagonism between Leia and Poe. One valuing lives above all, the other risking lives to try and beat the enemy. There was no need to bring in another character to continue this argument. She really brought nothing new to the story. Her sacrifice with the hyperspace ramming, while spectacular, lacked emotion simply because it was a character we didn't really care about. Funny thing is they had one on board in Admiral Ackbar but they decided to kill him off with only a passing mention. That ramming scene would have carried so much more weight for fans if it was Ackbar sacrificing himself to save the others.

Agree what you say about Snoke's death. Was quite an anticlimax. The arch villain was suddenly gone, leaving many unanswered unresolved questions his own story. Phasma's death and also her reintroduction were both about as pointless as Finn's own quest.

I hear what you're saying about Luke flying into he last battle in his X-wing....but that really would only be some corny fanboy satisfaction play. :lol:

There were also a lot of little plot holes and continuity errors along the way. Those can be annoying but never worry about them too much.

To be fair, I'm not sure it's possible to actually spoil Star Wars movies. I haven't been bothered with them since actual Senate debates were more interesting than episode 2.
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Are there any other kind of movie at the moment, it’s a trend likely to continue for a long time. Disney has about another 10 years worth of Star Wars planned (1 a year) and before even acquiring XMen and FF4 had their next 20 comic movies planned.

I thought they were only doing the last 3 SW films + 3 others (Rogue1, Han Solo + one other). I'll try and see the new one in the next few weeks. Anybody comment on the 2D v 3D, however I will watch in 3D because that is a main reason for watching at the cinema for me, ie the visuals.

They have the next 3 of the actual Star Wars series, Han Solo, Bobba Fett, talk of a Yoda one, with how much they paid for it they will milk the franchise as much as they can, still a few tv series being talked about as well and with disney starting a streaming service they’re becoming more likely. I’m hoping they’ll kick off a whole new movie series back 2,000 years in the time of the old republic.

yeah, there is so much spin off potential in the Star Wars universe you can imagine a multi-season TV series coming into play. Especially considering the public thirst for this kind of entertainment now. I'm with you on the Old Republic theme. It can leverage of the overall Star Wars theme while delivering entirely new material for viewers. They would have pretty much free reign with the scripts and still be able to draw on some source material from the books that have been written.

.....speaking of which, I've very much looking forward to The Witcher series reportedly in production for Netflix. These are meant to be based on Sapkowski's series of books, not necessarily the games.

POSSIBLE STAR WARS THE LAST JEDI SPOILERS BELOW
*************************************

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yeah I agree with what you're saying Pigman and NR, I'll put you guys in charge of editing the next Star Wars movie.
Like you said there were a few times when the story looked like it was going in a way that would've been interesting, but didn't.
and yeah, the near death of some characters who survived through a miracle, kind of takes away from the actual deaths of others since you're not discounting some kind of last moment miracle to save them... half expecting phasma bouncing off some sort of trampoline out of the fire pit to save them or something lol.
Yeah, if you're not really into Superheroes and/or sequels that go for 3 hours long then you've been **** out of luck going to the movies for the past decade and for the next one to come.
A mate of mine came up with an even better option for the hyperspace kamikaze run. This scene could have been Leia's heroic exit from the series. Considering we lost Carrie Fisher well before production had finished they knew Leia could not have a major part in the next movie. Would have given this scene the ultimate emotional impact.
Of course that would have involved a whole swag of re-writes of earlier scenes. But they stuffed up to start with by introducing Laura Dern with purple hair as a new character who added zero value to the story.
My least favourite of the current reboot. I'm going to digest it a bit before I decide if it deserves to be banished with the prequels or not. **LAST JEDI Spoilers below**
* Floating space Leia. Why? What was the point of the scene? Didn't work for me- it had a weird fairytale godmother vibe and was the least effective Leia moment (the whole film could have done with more Leia).
*Porgs. Cutesy and annoying. Then again, I loved ewoks as a kid. The difference here- whilst ewoks were cutesy kid-bait they had a role in the movie, they had their own little story arc, going from suspicious and hostile, to tentative allies and playing a crucial role in a battle. What did Porgs do?
*The "Cloud City" rehash of the casino planet was on one level completely extraneous to the rest of the film and cut have been cut out to make a tighter film. It DOES serve a purpose though in setting up the possibility of NEW star wars adventures that do not exclusively focus on The Force and special chosen ones who battle for the fate of the universe. It sets up people who don't take a side and creates a space for people who just exist in the SW universe without being tied up to the original metaplot. This ties in with the "leave the Jedi behind" theme running through the film.
*The above leaves me interested that Disney Star Wars could potentially go somewhere interesting once they have finished with this Skywalker/Solo plot arc, which in some ways is an albatross around the neck of the new films- they can't really go anywhere surprising since Lucas did it all in the originals and they seem to think that to make a Star Wars film they have do follow the exact same conflicts/themes.
*Turning the climactic light sabre handover at the end of TFA into a literal throwaway joke... Felt like a bait and switch, not cool. Although it DOES fit with the "let the Jedi thing go now" undercurrent the director was establishing. Overall the film felt like a rejection of many aspects established in TFA and that scene summed it up.
*Kylo Ren has a character arc. Rey has a clear personality. Poe is a clear archetype, played quite well. They don't seem to know what to do with Fin at this point. What is his arc? What is his personality? What is his archetype apart from "not really part of the resistance"- I feel like there is a lot of untapped potential to actually do something interesting with this character that they just aren't doing.
*Too much exposition talking about feelings and earnestly explaining how important everything is. They break the golden rule of show don't tell. Han didn't care. The originals just got on with doing cool stuff and let you care /wonder about things by deciding for yourself, not having everything explained at ypu.
I'd have cut half an hour out of it, whuch would have eliminated the annoying Asian lass completely.
Why a film that has had what appears to be a prawn commanding battle fleets needs to worry about adding characters for diversity, I will never know.
Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.
They should have stopped the Star Wars sequels a long time ago.
If people enjoy Will Smith “Bright” his new movie on Netflix is enjoyable, worth a look.
I went to see The Greatest Showman and Call Me By Your Name today.
The Greatest Showman... well Hugh Jackman qualifies. He’s a great performer in musicals. I like him. But the film is somehow glib, shallow and the songs lack true emotional depth. Disney animated film songs have more emotional depth. There’s no subtlety. If in doubt, pump up the drums seems to be the thought. The idea that PT Barnum was somehow not exploiting those with physical deformities, but was liberating them... so this is a celebration of human differences, well it just doesn’t stack up. Like P.T. Barnum’s Circus, this film is not what it pretends to be... and puts a 21st century gloss over the motivations of the people at the time. A poor man’s Moulin Rouge. It’s like they were going for that... but failed.
Call Me By Your Name is not going to suit everyone, and it’s probably going to be confronting for some people, maybe a lot. But it’s a film that is not getting rave reviews for nothing. Gay coming of age film set in the early 1980’s, it’s beautifully filmed over a languid Italian summer in an idyllic Italian villa and country town. Incredible performances from the leads, and the almost monologue from the father towards the end of the film is full of tenderness, compassion and understanding. It’s complex, it’s subtle, it’s heart breaking and the final scene from Timothee Chalamet is one of the cinema’s most memorable. Amazing performance. If he doesn’t get a Best Actor nomination, if he doesn’t win, there’s something seriously wrong.
Sorry Bonehead, I know it is sacrilege to most people... but they’ve become comic book films in my view. I’ll probably watch this one when it comes free on Foxtel, but it’s got to be something out of the box, like Deadpool, before I watch comic book movies. Hollywood is pumping out the same film, with bigger and better special effects and CGI, but they’re all the same film. Nothing original and I’m personally finding them really boring. I watch a lot of movies out a sense of duty... Star Wars movies have fallen into that category for a while.
But I do understand why a lot of people would disagree, and I can see the nostalgic appeal of new episodes of films loved in youth.
