OFF! are pretty rad. I like ACP, but that kinda stuff becomes pretty unlistenable after a while - I can only listen to that old-school hardcore sound in short bursts.

Even though they aren't new, you should sink your teeth into some DRI. I'm pretty sure you aren't really familiar. 'Thrash Zone' and 'Dealing With It' are the places to start.

They are pretty much the first band to fuse hardcore and thrash to create the genre of crossover (a name of one of their albums). Every Municipal Waste song is basically an homage to DRI.

The problem I have with really old-school stuff (like early '80's) is that the production values are so horrible - it has a certain charm and authenticity, no doubt, but it becomes pretty painful after a while. Even that AC4 record which was released in 2010 has that same feel to it, which is a bit of a cool throwback to old times, but if you try and listen to it too often it gives you brain damage. The over-produced metal-core sound with triggered kick-drums and friggin' auto-tune vocals sucks just as badly though.

Metalcore sucks. Period. I never want to see that term appear again in this thread.

Obviously there are limits, but I like the rawness of 80s production. Punk rock and slick production don't mix.

That DRI song I linked to is kind of a novelty, party anthem song, but cool nonetheless. The majority of their stuff is killer 90 second HC/thrash. Worth persevering with, believe me.

I hate the term post hardcore. **** is that anway? Although, the Alexisonfire concert I went to years ago was **** insane!

No, but it seems to me like it might be a bit Amorphis. Metalocalypse seems intriguing- and they have dvds. Pending disposable income.

Thoughts on bands like System of a down and Rob Zombie? (No, I'm not joking). I just can't take RZ seriously. Quality music, but I get tired of it quickly. SOAD are OK, but they are, in true Armenian style, pure bumpkins high on meth that somehow create some bloody good music at times while other times are dross.

Rob Zombie's new album is okay. I get that his schtick can get pretty tiresome. I will always love Astro Creep (White Zombie) though. Such a great album. Do you have it, dubby?

ps I quite like System of Down, apart from the stupid Armenian folk music schtick - when they want to get into the rock, they rock - tracks like Aerials, Violent Pornography etc. That said even when they don't rock they're sort of funny.

On his 91st birthday, Sir Christopher Lee, the world's oldest metal performer, has launched the sequel to his epic concept album about Charlemagne.

If you missed Sir Christopher Lee's symphonic metal concept album Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross, about the emperor Charlemagne, then you missed out — but right now is a fantastic opportunity to catch up. The nonagenarian singer and actor launched the second album on 27 May — his 91st birthday.

This officially marks him as, among many other awesome things including his friendship with Tolkien and his interest in occultism, the oldest metal performer in history.

However, for fans of prog metal, the new Dream Theater album is well and truly a return to form. Mangini seems a whole lot more robust on drums than Portannoying was recently. (Especially as I made the mistake of getting the Adrenaline Mob album). Mainly though the songs are much better than A Dramatic Turn of Events and the lyrics are way better (ie not embarrassing) than on Black Clouds... In short, I've heard it twice and I like it.
