Re: The Television Thread
Just finished the last episode of Modern Family. There's quite a few longstanding shows finishing up this year.
Probably closer to comfort food than critical darling in its later years, but I'm sad to see it end - even though it had to happen eventually. It was frequently heartwarming, and I've now seen the last of a whole bunch of loveable characters I've been watching for over a decade.

Another one down, this time it's "The Good Place".
I came onto that one a year or two after it started, though enjoyed it all the way through. A fascinating concept and story, executed really well.

Yeah I can vouch for Good Place. Such a unique show. I’m a big fan of anything Michael Schur is involved in. I’ve nominated at least one character from each of his shows in the Best Character poll
Ted Danson impressed me in it. Before this show, I thought he was only really good at one type of character, but then he does Michael

Watching First Dates, I have a theory that 95% - 98% of men on this show say yes to a 2nd date, regardless of how successful the date is.

Re: The Television Thread
Caught up again on Last Dance. I’m finding MJ more and more fascinating as the doc goes on.
People have been saying how the show makes you see how much of a dick he was, but to me it’s showing how far he would go to be the best, and how far he would push his teammates. Reminds me of that movie Whiplash in a way, it’s the cost of his success.
They covered his gambling, and how he would bet on everything from his golf game, to who could land a penny closest to a wall. How he’d go from playing $1,000 hits of cards with the highest paid players in the Bulls, to playing $1 hits of cards with the lower paid players, simply because “He liked to say he has your money in his pocket.” They asked him if he’s addicted to gambling and he said no, because he can stop anytime, he’s addicted to competition.
It’s got me curious to see if there’s an NRL equivalent, or even a Raiders equivalent.

Yeah I heard about Jerry passing on. I didn’t see a lot of his work. I knew him from Zoolander and King of Queens... which he was the best thing about that show.

Re: The Television Thread
He was magnificent on Seinfeld.
One of the many great things about the show was their eye for characters and they nailed it replacing the original Frank Costanza with Jerry Stiller early on.

The Jerry Stiller news really had me feeling sad. He was such a great comedic actor. I dont think i ever saw a scene of his in Seinfeld that didnt make me laugh.

Well... yeah... I was meaning whether there's been anyone in the NRL/Raiders who's been such a pusher for perfection and success as he was. The closest thing I can think of is maybe Bellamy at the Storm, but he's not a playerBotman wrote: ↑May 14, 2020, 8:24 amThere is not.Fuifui Bradbrad wrote: ↑May 10, 2020, 6:42 am It’s got me curious to see if there’s an NRL equivalent, or even a Raiders equivalent.

What a freaking finale and what a season.
I have spent the last 2+ hours in contemplative silence and disbelieving discussion with my best Survivor friend.
There's just too much to unpack right here, right now. But man, I have never been more satisfied with an episode, season and win.

Re: The Television Thread
Just booted up Netflix, there's a new Steve Carell show called "Space Force" that appears to mock Trump's Space Force. Gold!
In the quick trailer, they're all laughing about the creation of Space Force, unbeknownst to one of them that he'll be running it.
EDIT:
There's some big names behind this thing. Steve Carell, Lisa Kudrow, Noah Emmerich, the late Fred Willard, John Malkovich.
The list of familiar faces goes on; Jimmy O. Yang (Jian-Yang from Silicon Valley), Jane Lynch, Patrick Warburton, Kaitlin Olsen from Always Sunny, a couple of guys from Veep whose names I don't recognise but instantly know them onscreen (Diedrich Bader and Dan Bakkerdahl).
According to the reviews it's rather middle-of-the-road, and not particularly funny for a comedy... but given the star power behind it, and the fact it's only 10x 30min episodes, I might just have to watch it.

Re: The Television Thread
Yeah I watched the first 2 eps, and was pretty disappointed. I had high hopes since it was the same guy who gave us the US Office, but I wasn’t a fan. It helped justify my theory that if a show/movie has a ****tonne of A Listers, the script isn’t good

I’m 2/3 of the way through and I think it’s **** brilliant.
It’s not as good as the office but I’m starting to think as it gets older people will start to like it more. It’s not mind blowing but the to and fro between Carrell and Malkovich is enjoyable and Jin Yang from Silicon Valley is great in his role too.

Re: The Television Thread
Probably the best place for this. Thoughts on shows like Tropic Thunder, Gone with the Wind and Faulty Towers being taken down?
I’m still working through my thoughts. While I agree with the cause, I don’t think this is the right step. Fair enough, put a warning at the start declaring the show contains themes that were common at the time, but are now acceptable, but I don’t think I support removing the show all together.
I feel if they do this here, then shows like I Love Lucy, Shameless, Wolf of Wall Street and any other show that depicts domestic violence should get the same treatment.
