This has given me a new rule to live by though
1. Don’t be that guy who runs for a train
2. Never trust a man with a moustache
3. Alway have a blocker picked out when walking around the CBD to intercept the Charity sign ups
4. Don’t be the guy snapped with a trolley load of toilet paper

The virus just touched down in the shire. Send me your thoughts and prayers. If someone could spare a square that'd also be appreciated.
Re: Coronavirus
Even with the imminent bankruptcy of the TR empire, and the prospect of moving my family to live under a bridge....yes, I think I'll stick with my original answer.
Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

I’ve been watching Peaky Blinders T_R. If the empire goes down, I’ve got your back. We can start an underground TP smuggling business. I’ll take care of NSW, and I’ll smuggle some to the Qld border when you can take over.
All I need to do is get someone inside Quilton, and have them ditch a pallet somewhere

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

There's probably always been a herd mentality... but worryingly, it seems that, increasingly, there are people who seem to revel in rejecting expertise, knowledge and facts and rely on misinformation, simply because that conforms to some unfortunate belief systems. As soon as you hear the terms "fake news" or "politically correct" you know you're in that territory.

Absolutely greeneyed.
The fall of listening to experts has a lot to answer for.
Common sense was never particularly common. But I think the internet has made it near extinct. Everybody being able to look up the answer seems to be destroying the capability for people to think through what a sensible first approximation of an answer is.

Re: Coronavirus
This scenario is fairly straight forward. Initial some people went into Doomsday Prepper mode and stocked up on toilet paper. Media reports it showing some loaded trollies and empty shelves. Now the general population is terrified of not having toilet paper so they many more are chasing it.
We'll be in the same boat by the end of the week. I'm hoping the panic starts to drop off by then. Problem is we'll all need some toilet paper before too long.

Spot on. At some point “I have a right to my opinions” has evolved to “My opinions are worth as much/more than facts”greeneyed wrote:There's probably always been a herd mentality... but worryingly, it seems that, increasingly, there are people who seem to revel in rejecting expertise, knowledge and facts and rely on misinformation, simply because that conforms to some unfortunate belief systems. The toilet paper outage also happened during the Brisbane flood. I couldn't understand it at the time. Wet toilet paper is of no use to anyone.

That's because everyone was looking for dry stuff and many areas couldn't get stock. Straight forward supply and demand issue. This is purely about demand going beserk.

The initial initial scenario was some mums group on Facebook posted a post that originated in Japan about a shortage of supply as it's all manufactured in China.Northern Raider wrote:This scenario is fairly straight forward. Now hysterical people don't do research to know most of Australia's supply is manufactured in Australia.. but by the point reason came to the party it was too late

Um no. This was in the 24-48 hours leading up to the floods, when we knew that there would be flooding, and who would be effected. This was in areas that were never going to be flooded. Don't recall any of that. I do know bottled water sold out because of risks about supply being affected. We had bigger concerns at the time anyway.Dr Zaius wrote: ↑March 9, 2020, 1:11 amUm no.
