Re: The Politics Thread
Don't get me wrong, I'm not particularly against clubs shutting earlier (from a purely selfish point of view, I hate it when you arrange to hit the town and everyone sits around pre-gaming until like 11pm, that **** me - I'd rather start at 5 or 6 and pack it in at 2am), but I am concerned that this will go the same way as the 'war' on drugs, which is just an attempt to criminalize and restrict the behaviour and movement of individuals without any attempt to actually address the underlying problem. From what I understand, purely time-frames, every single person who's been in the news lately for being the poor sod knocked senseless by some scumbag would have suffered the same fate under the new laws.
Re: The Politics Thread
Is it true that Packer and his casino is exempt from the rule?
So while people can no longer able to enter a new club they are free to walk in a spend the cash in his casino which will be one of the few places 'open'?

Re: The Politics Thread
That's the way it's been in Brisbane since the lockout started years ago, the Casino is the only place exampl from the 3am lockout. Considering the problem of gambling its a bit strange.Schifty wrote:Is it true that Packer and his casino is exempt from the rule?

On the topic of the sticky icky (and without bothering to research, sorry,) wouldn't the respiratory complications and cancers associated with the mouth, throat and lungs be non-existent if you vaporised or consumed edibles? Doc?
Re: The Politics Thread
They would be healthier methods of using but all the things you mentioned are debatable issues anyway, it's been used as a bronchodilator for centuries and help fight cancers, one of the major problems is cost meaning people "spin" with tobacco which causes all those issues smoked by itself.

Re: The Politics Thread
In my home town in Wagga they introduced the same rules re lockouts and closing times about 10 years ago.
Whilst the instances of assaults have gone down, people just get absolutely hammered earlier in the night. Come 1-2 it's a free for all everyone drinking as much as possible.

Well, at least Jack got paid.

These lockouts won't have much of an effect on the groups of bros who start drinking at 10am in the morning.

Don't be a **** child. What a stupid response. I've never thrown a punch in my life, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be concerned with these laws.Shadow Boxer wrote:Don't throw a punch and you've got nothing to worry about.
I'm more concerned with the fact that it is now legally far, far worse to throw a single punch while drunk on Oxford Street than it is to throw a flurry of punches 10m away in Surry Hills whilst completely sober. Almost none of this legislation makes a single bit of sense.

lol, i was being sarcastic, they are as stupid as the bikie association laws in QLD, they will do nothing to fix the problem.Michael wrote:Don't be a **** child. What a stupid response. And considering I can't read your message in a sarcastic context, you may need to look up sarcasm in the dictionary.Shadow Boxer wrote:No need, easy to read that way, the internet needs a sarcasm emoticon.
Or I may have to, one of the two.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Re: The Politics Thread
Here's an article on a subject that we're going to see much more of in the next couple of years. Interesting read:
The trouble with trade unions
Jeez, you’d have to really hate being a union rep right about now. Seemingly everywhere you look there are examples of how the union movement’s relevance is plummeting, while its questionable behaviour is ramping up. Just in case you haven’t noticed, here’s a selection:

Re: The Politics Thread
Why would I be outraged? Corruption is corruption and the rank and file suffer far more than the outraged right wing hacks when corrupt union officials misuse member contributions.
Re: The Politics Thread
Certainly doesn't stop the Greens accepting election donations from those corrupt officials, though.
