Yeah the teachers at training centres have a responsibility some take seriously, when I did karate years ago my first teacher was very strict on the ethics of control etc but after he left the guy who took over didnt give a ****.

I congratulate you that you're taking the time to learn more, but I think you'll have to go a bit deeper and a little broader to get a less biased, more reasonable take on things.

Haha good idea we'll just go round in circles, I do think BBC, Amnesty internal and other outside media are more reliable than trusting someone else's personal experience who might've been shielded from it though and that's nothing personal I'd say the same if I had had your experiences. I hope you're right mate cause I've got a lot of time for every Japanese person I've met so far.

I've no doubt coercion exists in western culture but looking at it our people who are charged have more legal rights and evidence playing a strong part in our system (which can be set up by cops or misinterpreted) helps keep our system a bit safer from that kind of thing.

I'm trying to read a wide variety of stuff on it except the actual governments view as I don't trust any government to be honest to their people, all governments love propaganda.

Now I haven't read the entire thread, just the start and end, so I'm not sure what's happening in-between.

These days when I head out for a beer it's to my local rugby club so I can't really comment on whether or not there are less or more fights in nightclubs compared to when I was young and going out every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I'd go to jolly jugs at Pandoras on a Thursday night, Sails on the Friday night and downstairs Private Bin on the Saturday night. I never really saw any trouble at Pandoras, besides from being thrown down the stairs myself once but Sails and the Private Bin were out of control, Sails especially. Every week there'd be fights and not just one on one but fights where numerous people were involved. I remember one night at the Private Bin where I was at the downstairs bar, walking back with four pints up the small stairs towards the beer garden. A big fella saw me coming and deliberately blocked me off, I asked him nicely to move over a bit to make way but no luck. All sorts of things were running through my head, I even thought about walking all the way around via the dance floor, but those of you who used to frequent the Bin would know that when it's jam packed, going around is a long haul and I'd probably spill half the beer. So instead I turned side on and barged my way past him, continued to walk and didn't look back. Next minute he punched me right in the back of my head, followed by another punch from one of his mates and then a third jumped in. By this stage I was back down the stairs and on the ground and as I attempted to get up some random punched me again. This is the sort of stuff that used to happen all the time, luckily only once to me. I was very young back then, didn't know anything about defending myself and just took it on the chin and didn't do anything about it. Now my father in law who's in his 70's and played for Newtown at one stage ( although I think he only cracked one first grade game ) has told me heaps of fighting stories from when he was young, but they were all straightforward fair fights and no gutless punching from behind or when the other person wasn't expecting it. As an example the garbage men refused to empty his bin one week, so the next week he waited outside for the truck to arrive and challenged them both to a fight ( my wife has verified this, so all true ), he fought them both at once, lots of blood on all of them afterwards, but in the end he came out on top. The garbage men then emptied his bin and never missed his pickup again. That wouldn't happen these days, people don't have a blue and forget about it or get on with things, you'd probably find the garbage man coming back with 20 mates and belting the crap out of you. I think that's the difference, I'm not sure which era violence started to get worse, rather than just a one on one fight and then it's done with it escalates into something worse. In conclusion, coming from the Bigcheese who always finds himself in trouble, let's all just get along.

Secondly, I appreciate the fact you didn't use any statistics. They mean abosultely nothing - apparently - and there's nothing like a good old anecdote to provide definitive results!

Does anyone remember that clock in civic that people used to dive off into the crowd on New Years Eve?

By the time Monday night came along, my apprentice wage was well gone and I was in desperate need of sleep!

I remember the old clock, it was the checkpoint we'd all meet at before going for a drink.

Besides getting the crap beat out of me those few years after school were good times.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but the clock in civic was indeed the way you'd meet up with someone in the years before mobile phones (whenever that was). You'd tie an onion to your belt...

Um why didn't you just do what most people did back before mobiles, meet at the pub at a set time?

I'm usually at the cross say once every 3 weeks these days. Once every 2nd week last year.

But ive only ever seen 1 king hit. And that was over a taxi and wasnt even in the cross, it was closer to town hall. Bloke fell back and cracked his skull pretty hard. Lucky not to have died.

Ive seen a couple of other fights here and there. Never had anyone arc up to me luckily.

Forgetting about the **** that actually deliver these punches.. alcohol can turn an innocent kid, just looking for a fun night out, into a target, because he doesnt have full control over his words or actions and may unfortunately result in a response (king hit) from a **** looking to create trouble. It's all very sad.

But in all seriousness, when the 18 year old (Daniel if I recall?) was killed in the cross there was a massive media hoo ha and I vaguely remember Scipione or a doctor saying there's nothing kingly about it, its a cowards tactic, and from then on most media outlets took it on. Danny green used the term a lot as well, but I don't think he coined it originally.

Ah, right. Yeah, I sort of remember a police commissioner kicking off with it, so it probably was Scipione.

The Telegraph picked it up and ran with it, they made it "a thing". Moral panic.

I went to Bobby McGees one night to have a drink with a couple of mates who were staying at the pub there. It was pretty quiet until all these porn stars and cameramen etc rocked in, about 50 of them. It was a bit of a circus.
