Fui Flips it: Odd Numbered Tapas Dishes

Posted: March 8, 2021, 1:42 pm
by FuiFui BradBrad
After reading some of the regular segments on this site, I felt inspired to start my own. So welcome to the first instalment of Fui Flips it.

Essentially I'm going to post about something that's been grinding my gears, and see if I'm the only one out there feeling the same way. Looking at my initial list, it seems to be very restaurant related

And with that, here we go

Fui Flips it: Stonegrill

You all might be familiar with this place, but for those who aren't, here's a description of what Stonegrill does from their website
Stonegrill Ascot Hotel wrote:Stonegrill dining enables patrons to enjoy a meal freshly grilled to personal taste, whether it be rare, medium or well done. When a Stonegrill meal is presented at the table, diners simply turn over their Stonegrill selection, then cut and side-lay a portion or two, allowing these to sear and cook to their liking. Their meal remains hot and enjoyable, as the natural volcanic stone retains a prime cooking temperature for 30 minutes, allowing diners to eat at leisure, with every bite as hot and delicious as the first.
Essentially you order a steak, it comes out of this stone plate, which is still cooking the meat as it rests. You then cut it all up and eat it to your liking. This is where Fui Flips It. The chef isn't even cooking the steak anymore, you, the patron are. So you're probably thinking "Ok, so the chef isn't cooking the steak, its got to be cheaper than a regular steak right?" Wrong. Looking at the Ascot Hotel menu, the cheapest steak is still $33, with an average price of $30 - $40.

In other words, not only are you paying for the experience of cooking your own steak, the price is still comparable to your typical steak place.

Tell me I'm not wrong, and this whole idea is a rip?

Some korean restaurants can be a little similar, dropping the raw food at the table for you to cook yourself and can also be a little pricey. I don't mind it too much though because the wife takes over.

Cooking up some asian bbq while politely sipping your soju is where it's at.

100% with you
the Kingo here in Canberra does that

If i wanted to cook my own steak, and often i do, ill go and buy a nice bit of meat and do it at home...if im going out to eat, the reason is mostly i want someone else to do the **** heavy lifting.
Why would i pay resturant prices for a steak i have to cook myself?

**** that noise.

One should always have their meat cooked by someone when out, you only cook your own meat in the privacy of your own home imo.

Alrighty guys, week 1 down, and despite the poll results, the majority seemed to be in agreeance that Stonegrill is a dumb idea. I feel the serenity wash over me as we speak. Time for this week, and its a similar theme

Fui Flips it - Disassembled cuisines
So last weekend Mrs Fui and I went to this Mexican restaurant. I ordered Burritos. I was looking forward to them, until they came out. What I got was
  • One plate for the Wraps
  • One Plate for the Chicken
  • One Plate for the tomatos
  • One bowl for the Guoc
  • One bowl for the salsa

There is where Fui Flips It. To be, its the same as Stonegrill, this Chef is having a bubble bath. The whole idea is so I can have the food the way I like it, but nope. Once again, paying to put my own food together.

So GHers, once again, am I wrong?

Similar to stone grill I'm not making my **** food. It either comes assembled or I'm having it at home.

Why on earth you would want to pay restaurant prices to cook your own steak is one the two biggest mysteries to me.

Why on earth you would want to get fish and chips with Craig Kelly is the other.

Stone grill is the biggest rort. Paying extra to cook your own steak? If I wanted to cook it myself I'd go buy one from the butcher

We're getting on a bit of a roll here. Welcome to this week's installment. I've taken the hint that anything disassembled is a no no, so we're moving on to

Fui Flips it - Microwave etiquette

So you're all familiar with the scenario. You have your lunch ready to whack into the microwave. You put it in, try to enter the time, and nothing's working. When you look at the Microwave, you see there's 1 sec left on the timer. So you need to clear it out, and away you go. The other scenario is when you're in the office waiting to use the microwave. You're waiting for the person ahead in the queue to do their thing, only to see them open the microwave with 5 secs remaining, get their food, and leave the microwave for you to deal.

This is where Fui Flips It How hard is it to
  • A. Reset the microwave once you're finished
  • B. Set the microwave 5 seconds less than you meant to, if you're not going to use that 5 seconds
  • C. Wait until the microwave is finished, then take your food
I don't understand the rationale. The microwave alerts you when it's finished, why are you taking it out early?

So once again GHouso's, is Fui wrong?

I take it out early usually, but I hit the stop/reset button when I do it.

But I can't say I've ever got to a microwave and been that stupid I can't operate it because the guy before me didn't hit reset... that's on you, pal.

Just for laughs I cover my junk while the microwave is going.

I usually take mine out at 5 seconds cause it makes **** all difference

And it takes .00001 to reset it, so it doesn't phase me in the slightest

I never take my out early. When i commit to something, that's it. No turning back.. if it's over flowing like a **** volcano so be it.

What broke me was this is something I'd see happen at work, then when Covid hit and we started working from home, the microwave at home started doing the same thing.
I never thought Mrs Fui was capable of such things
