Looking at a possible Canberra move

Post by Sir Green »

Hey All,

I'm currently living in Wagga and work in IT (at an MSP provider) I popped over to see the game on Sunday and stayed with a mate formerly of the Wagga persuasion who had recently moved over for job opportunities. He's loving it and mentioned there's a lot of IT jobs available in Canberra, he could maybe even set me up at his work.

Before the wife and I think too seriously about it, I was just wondering from the Canberra folk here what they think about living in Canberra, what the cost of living / housing situation is and areas to look out for if I would consider a move? We've got a 2yo little one and likely more on the way, as well as her parents who live in Wagga, but nothing concrete to keep us where we are. I'd get the obvious benefits of seeing more Raiders games if I move there, but any other pros / cons people could share light on when we're weighing up a decision?

Mostly just spit-balling at the moment out of curiosity, but thanks for any input!

I lived in Sydney for years
Love the place, but if you've got a young family canberra really is a perfect place for you
We moved down, we've now got 2 little ones (4 and 2 by the end of oct) and we couldn't be happier

Housing prices are expensive in good suburbs, like any city

The cold is offset by having 4 genuine seasons. You get winter, summer, spring and autumn in canberra

The restaurant scene is truely superb. The nightlife is improving...
The draw backs are some hold overs of the large country town it used to be, little things like butchers and bakers who don't open on Sunday drive me mental

I would never recommend canberra to a young guy or girl looking for a vibrant and diverse social life
It can't compete with big cities in that regard, even though it's improving dramatically

But for someone coming from Wagga, with a young family? Canberra will suit you perfectly imo

Thanks for the rundown Pigman, I've got a bit of the family friendly vibe when I've been there.

No real nightlife doesn't bother me, past 30 I'm just after a great meal and some Sunday pints with decent atmosphere.

Time will tell if there's any substance behind the short term plans for a move but the more we're thinking about it the more likely we see it happening long term.

Lucy reckons Canberra is a boring **** hole.. which is fair

I'm pretty young and I enjoy it so I guess it's perspective

It's not fair. It's a great city to live in.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

I spent 17 years there. It's not an opinion based on nothing. It's backed by experience, knowledge and boredom.
