Travelling down to Canberra

Post by mike »

Looks like I will be heading down to the Friday night game vs Manly on the 3rd of June.

I was just curious if anyone had any suggestions on where I should look at grabbing a hotel? Wouldn't mind a beer or two before and after the game so not sure where that happens in Canberra but would be good to be handy to there?

Easy transport would help as well but don't mind jumping in an Uber.. that's a thing down there right? :P

Cheers in advance for the suggestions team!

Get a bus if you want to wait 30 minutes for each one.

Dickson would also have the worst hotels. Much more choice in Civic.

I always stay at Rydges Lakeside, they do a fantastic buffet breakfast, which is an absolute must. I'll be there again this year for the night of the game

I think they've changed their name though, GE will know more...

I think there called QT now. I agree it's probably better option to stay in civic more options for drinking places i.e. Casino, pubs or night clubs

The QT buffet breakfast is probably the best in Canberra, even has prosciutto on the bone.

The steakhouse is beyond awesome but take your wallet, they don't miss.

I stayed at the QT last night for the Canberra multicultural festival. Not a fan. Walked into the room and the first thing I hear is the Mrs screaming. King Kong put his finger print in the toilet. Requested a room change but the room wasn't much better. Bottles of water bed side had been drunk and filled with tap water. The cleaning staff leave a lot to be desired. Last time I stay there.

King Kong did what ?

I think the festival itself is getting pretty tired and is lining up the shark. Same food in the same places, big price increases, the Greeks dominating everyone for the best food.

Needs a shake up of some kind

Travelling down to Canberra

Hahahah seriously?
Mate every year they get more and more people and you're literally the only person I've ever heard say a bad word about it!

Guess there is no pleasing everyone, but trust me on this one, the MCF is still considered the best event in Canberra by most people

It's a good day out and I always go, just a bit underwhelmed this year. I like to snack on all the different food but everything was like $8-15.

It's quite commercial now, I probably liked it a bit better when it was a bit smaller and less crowded.

It's the only event in Canberra we rearrange holidays for
We were supposed to be in Thailand right now, but knocked it back a few weeks so we could go to the MCF
We're now missing the first raiders home game, which is significant given my wife and I meet at a Raiders related function

Next year my daughter will be 18 months old and were dumping the kids on the grandparents so we can spend a good 4-5 hours there eating and drinking as we please

The Multicultural Festival is getting bigger and bigger every year. The only way it could be improved is if they move it to Commonwealth Park and introduce a 20 metre tower in Lake Burley Griffen for people to jump off inside their home made flying contraptions.

It is only then that our transformation into an NRL powerhouse will be complete.

The old frolic days aside it was a far better location, put the picnic blanket out, relax, listen to music, go on a few rides.

Maybe they need a permanent facility for it and Floriads, something like the Domain.

That sounds....
Amazing!

The crowd factor has been an issue but I noticed this year they did a MUCH better job of making sure they didn't have a cluster of really popular tents.

In 5 years of going there I don't think I've ever eaten Greek food, you can get that stuff just about anywhere, I tend to fill up on weird stuff like Lithuanian dumplings a few years ago which were ridiculously good

Check this out...100,000 people packed onto Regatta Point in 1987, watching people plummet into the lake with not a single workplace safety lawyer in sight. Fantastic stuff! http://www.nfsa.gov.au/blog/2013/10/01/ ... y-griffin/

BTW we get along to the MCF every year when we are in town. It was jammed packed this year...ate way too much food and listened to all sorts of music. Still a cheaper night out than going to most restaurants. Perfect weather for it too.
