Canberra is now the cool city of Australia

Canberra is now the cool city of Australia

CANBERRA has long been the butt of many jokes. A punching bag for Australia’s more esteemed cities.
“Boring”, “no personality”, “a place to retire”, it’s forever been likened as a trip to grandma’s house.

But something’s changed in our capital.

Could it be that Canberra has actually become cool? While we’ve all been busily avoiding the place, Canberrans have been chipping away at their image and quietly come to the forefront as sophisticated, quirky and somewhere you’d actually like to go.

It honestly seems like some Bull advertising for a hotel.

It's certainly on the improve, Braddon, New Acton and the Kingston Foreshore are really adding a lot to the city.
Agreed about Gungahlin though, that place is a soulless, depressing concrete prison.

It's going alright. I had a long weekend there recently and I saw four bands, a game of footy and some roller derby, went bushwalking, and ate some pretty good and diverse food. Frankly it has always been a place where you have to make your own fun but those who reckon it is dull aren't trying too hard. I'm a codger but, get over yourselves if you don't like the place, you're welcome to steer clear.

Yeh see even that is not remotely true, Canberra has four very distinct seasons, that's one of the things people love about it.

Canberra in the autumn is sublime.

100% agree with that, take out the hay fever aspect of it, which for me is a **** nightmare...
But Canberra really does deliver all 4 seasons, and spring and autumn in canberra are both fantastic. The summers arent any hotter than you get in sydney (or at least Western Sydney where im from).... im not going to dispute the winter being a **** of a season though, been here 5 years and still not used to them

I love the winter since we went out and bought the largest wood heater on the market. There's nothing better than a roaring fire on a crisp, cold day.

It's warm and cosy and I can keep the house at about 28 degrees all winter.

Canberra’s creepy underbelly: Why the capital really is a ghost town

ASK most Australians about Canberra and you’ll get little more than a yawn, with the capital known mainly for politics, peace and quiet.

Yet there’s another side to the city, one filled with strange stories of underground bunkers, secret listening towers, a disappearing lake, ghosts, UFOs and a hairy beast.

The ghost of Ben Chifley in the Brassey Hotel. All the ghosts in the film and sound archive, which used to be the Institute of Anatomy... right next to the eskimo embassy.
