GE's grammar tips

Post by greeneyed »

GE's grammar tips. Today, I'll be covering the correct use of the word, "myself". It's one of my pet hates.

Myself is a reflexive pronoun to intensify the meaning of me. It should never be used to replace me. So these are correct uses of the word:

I was able to answer all the questions by myself.
I, myself, have been a Canberra Raiders fan since birth.
I took it upon myself to fix the problem.
That was a great job, even if I do say so myself.
I'm going to treat myself to a cup of coffee.
I see myself here for the next five years.

This is incorrect:

Please contact Joe or myself if you have questions.

A good test is to take Joe out of the picture in that sentence: Please contact myself if you have questions. Doesn't sound correct does it? You'd say: Please contact me if you have questions.

Another good check is this: if you haven't put "I" in the sentence first, it's quite unlikely to be the correct use of the word!

I think Joe is irrelevant, Luffty. What GE means is that you can contact either Joe OR himself if you have any further queries about grammar.

Myself I doubt Joe even knows anything about the correct use of the word myself.

Can we all chime in?

I *accept* that the Raiders may not win a premiership next season, though I am hopeful.

It is not;

I *except* that the Raiders may not win a premiership next season, though I am hopeful.

I really really hate the above example.

Joe is clearly SBW mate (the plumber).

I don't agree with the second one.

I, myself, have been a Canberra Raiders fan since birth.

Why would you include 'myself' when the sentence makes perfect sense without it? You are complicating an already complicated language by using unnecessary words. Secondly it is a false statement for those born before 82.

But grammatically correct. Myself is a word that simply adds emphasis in this instance.

I usually add emphasis with an "F" word instead of an "M" word. More to the point why do you need to emphasise "I"? It's generally pretty self explanatory. For example if you say "I, that other bloke, have been a Canberra Raiders fan since birth" would just be ridiculous. In what context would stating "I have ...." require more emphasis?

EDIT.

By the way, this thread has EPIC written all over it. I can see this one eclipsing the Gambling thread by the end of next week.

Today we'll be covering split infinitives. Now some people say it's perfectly alright to split infinitives, but it's another pet hate!

Infinitives are made up of two words, for example:

to go

to run

to jump

A split infinitive involves putting an adverb between the two parts of the infinitive. The most famous example is from Star Trek: "to boldly go where no man has gone before". What the people from Star Trek should have said is: "to go boldly where no man has gone before". If you remember the Star Trek example, it's easy to avoid splitting infinitives. You just need to rearrange your words. For example:

"Joe decided to quickly throw the ball to Josh."

You shouldn't change it to: "Joe decided quickly to throw the ball to Josh." That changes the meaning.

What you could do is say: "Joe decided to throw the ball quickly to Josh."

There is is! Simple!

Actually it made me feel pretty sick. It's not real good, is it??

GE, I often struggle with when to use the word "tomorrow" and when I should use the word "tomorry". What is the correct context to use the two in??

Myself reckons you are too anal. As long as we get the message it's ok. I've noticed your generosity with the use of commas – no need. Treat them like gold medallions mate.
