I do essentially 0 exercise, but have always been in the healthy BMI range - closer to underweight than overweight.

Decided to try get fit shortly after Christmas, downloaded the C25K (couch to 5km) app and gave it a go; only got through 3 of the 8 runs on the first 'couch' level.

I made some rookie mistakes like not bringing any water, getting closer to sprinting than jogging during my 'runs', and picking a route that just so happened to coincide with a short uphill run just before I gave up... but I still think it was a rather appalling showing. :opps

The worst mistake of all was being ~2km from the start point when I gave up - walking from the Ginninderra Drive bridge back to my start point at Lake Ginninderra College sucked pretty hard having just given up in exhaustion.

Good work sterlk, starting is the hard bit!

Maybe try and get a cheap hr monitor, you can get cheap watches now that have simple functions. That way you can learn about pacing to a heart rate, and not blowing out to quickly. That's how I learnt to control pace when I started running, if you exceed your target, say 160-170bpm, you walk a section to recover to say150, then jog again. You would be amazed at how much more you can achieve when you control things like this.

Just keep at it sterlk. It's important to continue with the incremental gains. Some of us enjoy the long stuff but it's a gradual process to get there. I remember when I started. 5k walks after dinner. When that felt comfortable I started jogging and just did more and more.

And if it makes you feel any better, I still have problems with pacing myself today!

I've got this bizarre habit of planning distance, but not being able to plan speed. Some days I start and can run 5min, sometimes 5.30,5.45,sometimes 6 is all I have. I can really figure out what controls this, but I never really know which one I have until I finish my first km, then that lets me know if it's a good day or a bad day.

I wouldn't be congratulating me just yet, I haven't gone back out since. Dissipating thought bubble.

Some incidental exercise since then like spending a few hours in the surf at the beach, and walking a few kms from/to the mechanic after dropping my car off for a service, but nothing where the intent is fitness.

This BMI index is a bit of a stretch right ?

I'm 180cm tall and weigh 103kgs. My BMI is 31. The healthy range is 20-25.

I will admit I enjoy a beer and put on a few kilos during my 3 weeks off at Christmas but have been back to work 2 weeks now and have stripped a few kilos already.

It seems to me only whippets who eat celery fall within this range. My son is 23, is 180cm tall and weighs 78kgs. His BMI is 24. Which is healthy..he has a belly.

Friends tell me I've lost/added weight all the time but I've always hovered between 98-103kgs.

This BMI is rubbish right ?

I think it is, it doesn’t take into account muscle mass etc

Yeah it must be a joke..

I've just checked out the player profiles on raiders.com

My BMI is better than BJL, Dunamus Lui and Havili, 3 blokes who've been slogging it out all summer.

Muscle weighs more... so the players are going to weigh more... and they probably are more lean than us average people. The BMI is probably meaningful for people like us... but not for athletes, who have specialised programs.

BMI is only useful for people who do zero exercise

Muscle doesn't weigh more. 1kg of muscle weighs the same as 1kg of fat. It is more dense though.

Either way I'm a beer swilling layabout with a better BMI than elite athletes...

BMI is fairly crap, as it doesn't take into account so many variables.

One thing I have started in the last few weeks is a weekly measurement of body fat percentage. As I have cranked up time and distance in training (with swim strength sets and more cycling intervals) I have seen my total weight rise. When I raced Port last May I was 85kg, I came out of Christmas at 92. Have since got that back to 88. I'm significantly fitter and stronger than May, but am 'treating' myself to cheat meals more as I train more. It's easy to say that you are building muscle, and that explains the weight rise, but without any form of measurement it's also very easy to have your diet wrong and be putting on fat.

Diet is a real balancing act of making sure you take in enough carbs for the following days training, getting enough protein to recover from that days 1 or 2 sessions, and not overdoing them and overfuelling.

Too little, too late with two events in March.

Since starting to watch my diet (and adding next to no additional exercise), I've gone from 112.7kgs to 104kgs since early December. almost 10kgs just from tweaking my diet! Basically no more soft drinks, no more snacking on chips and chocolate and tuna salads for lunch at work most days. Saturday is my cheat day cos of cricket. Need to grab something on the way and usually its takeaway for dinner because of the late finish and my son needs to get to bed soon after i get home.

We got a home gym which we havent been able to use (long story, discontinued model that ended up having missing parts, getting it replaced for a new unit this week though). My goal was to be under 100kgs by the start of Soccer season (around easter) which looks very doable now.

I eventually want to settle at around the 90kgs mark so will be shooting for that long term.

Once my weight management is sorted, i'll look to kick the smokes... they're getting mighty expensive these days!

Had a great January, lots of hours and good base build up. Hurt my neck at a work event on Friday, and then while riding on Saturday morning I turned my head to check a side street and BAM, neck was locked and in pain. Got it tweaked yesterday, was a sprain between c4c5, and is a lot better today, may get on the turbo tonight for a light spin.

With a race likely coming up next weekend, timing not great. Neck will be fine by then, but by the time I can train hard again, it will be time to taper!!!

I see you're still getting in those long runs and burpee sessions, you must still have some motivation to get out of bed for burpees!!!

How annoying! What were you doing at the work even though? Haha.

I'm doing some good workouts, just much slower than I have done. Doing stupid hours at new role at work, so I have no consistency with my exercise. Sucks at the moment.

One of the events we do the sponsors for is the Kids Trythlon series, and I was shifting around some concrete ballast blocks and must have twisted the wrong way. That will teach me for not 'delegating'.

What events have you got in march??

I had a week away at a music festival over Australia Day weekend where I ate like crap and drank more alcohol in 5 days than I have in the last 5 years. It's been a real struggle to get the fitness back but I've forced myself to clock up some k's over the past week and I think I'm slowly getting it back.

It'll be fine. The Spartan is just a Super (14km), though I'm doing a Sprint lap (7km) later in the morning with a team from work.

I just don't think I can expect great results from either event, which is a frustrating prospect.

Wow that's good Tim.

My best deadlifts were circa 180kg back when i was fit. Many moons ago.

I'm doing stiff leg deadlifts 3x12. Only about 60kg but ouch!

Deadlifts I tend to start to lose a bit of form when it gets heavy, which I'm wary of, 140kg is my max for that.

Hit a few personal bests over the last couple of weeks.
Not going to be competing in the Commonwealth Games anytime soon, but it's always nice to better your personal milestones

87.5kg clean
60kg snatch
50 consecutive double-unders
