We've had 2 days relatively smoke free here at 2284.

But apparently there's another change in wind direction coming and we'll get more smoke soon..

All week I've been all set to go for a run after work but the smoke seems to settle in as soon as I got home. Had to bust out a 5k on the treadmill at work this arvo.

The smoke is back in Canberra with a vengeance.

Others elsewhere obviously doing far worse than us, though visibility at the moment here is probably the worst its been yet. I can see the road down in front of the building, everything beyond that is indistinct shapes.

I usually have a view of a mountain, have probably seen it twice in the last three-and-a-bit weeks since this mess began - definitely can't see it now. Saw it this morning though, if memory serves.

It changes quickly.

Hope everyone is safe. My dad lost his house in Batemans Bay today. He's safe, though. Still waiting to here from some extended family that live in the area. Appreciate they might be preoccupied right now

Sorry to hear reptar, glad your father is OK though. All of the places on the South Coast that are being devastated, they're dear to the hearts of Canberrans. It is so sad.

Thanks. He's okay, thankfully memories are mostly digital now, but I think he lost a fair few things, slides from Vietnam during the war, some memorabilia from when he played junior Waratahs. I'm not overly worried about my extended family, I'm sure they're just preoccupied, but they all live around the Catalina/Surf Beach area as well.

Weather Watch

By the light of day, the bushfire smoke in Canberra is thicker than I’ve ever seen here, even worse than the 2003 bushfires to hit Canberra... though that day the sky turned red, then black. It’s like thick fog. All windows shut tight but still the smell of smoke gets inside. How bad must it be on the South Coast?

Random fire alarm going off in the background, nobody seems to be doing anything about it.

The graph says it all, really:

We've got really thick smoke at 2284 this morning.

There's been bushfire at Wangi, Awaba, Myuna Bay the past few days and still burning.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.
