NSW and ACT SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
for LARGE HAILSTONES, DESTRUCTIVE WIND and VERY HEAVY RAINFALL

Issued at 2:53 PM Monday, 24 October 2005.



Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, destructive winds and very heavy rainfall in the warning area over the next several hours. The area east of the ranges north of Newcastle is more likely to experience destructive winds


Major locations within the warning area include Port Macquarie, Taree, Newcastle, Armidale, Tamworth, Moree, Dubbo, Coffs Harbour, Lismore, Grafton, Canberra and Yass.
At 2:40pm the weather radar showed a very dangerous thunderstorm passing east through Bulahdelah and approaching Seal Rocks. Golf ball size hail from this storm was reported at Stroud.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 13 2500.
* In the ACT, ring the ACT Emergency Service on 6207 8455

A second wave of the storm is hitting us again... lots of lightning and heavy rain. No winds though.

Had another big storm at about 4am, with hail this time... Lost count of the number of storms we have had in Canberra lately. Very unusual.

just looked at the weather forecast for the next seven days and it is predicted to rain every day ... the drought has truely boken :D

Looking out my window and things look very very cloudy. Looks like rain is almost certain any time soon, rain is good becuase it makes playing surfaces softer next day.

I think sustained rain over 2 days or so is good for playing surfaces. I remember playing in a mud bath at Gowrie Oval a few years back... I came off the field looking like Al Jolson.

It was freezing last night, had to put the heater on at one stage, and lots of rain in Canberra. Still freezing this morning and windy and threatening to rain....

Well off to sunny WA now. Might yet check back to see what's happening at the GH from over there.

You should of driven through Mitchell at 4:30pm on saturday, you required snow chains there was that much hail on the ground!!

Then 1km up flemington road closer to gungahlin there was not a drop of hail...crazy storm!!
Speed limits are just suggestions....Like pants!

Some of the strongest winds I have ever seen have just hit Civic. Stuff flying around everywhere - anything that wasn't nailed down.

Doesn't seem to be too much damage up here in the inner north, I heard Calvary Lost its power, I was at the sports club so I didn't really see the eye of the storm.

It has been windy over here in WA.... but nothing like that... hope everything is OK at home... just sitting in the Perth airport waiting for the red eye. I will get home at 6am Canberra time... :(
