55th min TRY KNIGHTS to Christopher Veaila. They ran it on the last, Sasagi kicked ahead and there was no one back there for the Raiders. No conversion from Camroux from the sideline.

61st min PENALTY KNIGHTS with Leo Thompson obstructing the Knights' defence, with Kaho in possession. But the Knights can't take advantage. They knock on.

14 mins to go TRY RAIDERS to Brad Schneider. They attacked from half way, with Lui offloading to O'Donnell, who set up the halfback. Schneider converts his own try.

75th min TRY KNIGHTS to Matt Soper-Lawler. The Raiders were attacking at the other end of the field... but kick ahead for the Knights and it ends in an easy try. Zane Camroux converts. The Knights really have been the better team.

79th min PENALTY RAIDERS They tackle Kaho in the air and a penalty try probably should have been awarded. He would have scored if they hadn't tackled him in the air.

TRY RAIDERS to Toby Marks. Schneider can't convert.

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders lose nail-biter in NSW Cup

The Canberra Raiders went down 22-20 to the Newcastle Knights in nail-biting a finish on Saturday in NSW Cup. The teams were level, at 16 all, with five minutes remaining. But the Knights turned defence into attack, going almost 100 metres in a couple of plays to score through Matthew Soper-Lawler. The Raiders had a chance to force a draw when centre Toby Marks scored untouched out wide right on full time, but the conversion was unsuccessful.

Newcastle Knights 22 (Tries: Croker, Huth, Veaila, Soper-Lawler; Goals: Camroux 3) d Canberra Raiders 20 (Tries: Kaho, James, Schneider, Marks; Goals: Schneider 2)

Also, according this article, the Parramatta reserves team will be 'full strength' as they are no guarantee to re-enter the NRL bubble

AT A GLANCE:

Last round: The Canberra Raiders again tasted defeat last Saturday, losing to the Newcastle Knights by just two points. The Raiders had an opportunity to draw the match, after Canberra centre Toby Marks scored a try in the final minute, but Brad Schneider was unable to convert. Both teams scored four tries, but the Knights kept their noses in front for a good part of the match.

Manase Kaho opened the scoring with a try for the Raiders in the 10th minute, with half Brad Schneider setting up his winger with a great cut out pass. But Newcastle tries to lock Matt Croker and hooker Luke Huth saw the Knights go to the half time break with a 12-4 lead.

Prop Ryan James put the Raiders right back into the contest three minutes into the second half, after he crashed over the line. A try to Knights winger Chris Veaila - after he chased a kick down the sideline - gave the Knights a 16-10 lead at the 55th minute. But a brilliant offload from Dunamis Lui to Kai O’Donnell, produced a much needed try for Schneider. The Raiders then drew level with 12 minutes remaining, when Schneider converted his own four pointer.

The Raiders looked threatening as the clock ticked down. But the Knights turned defence into attack in the 75th minute, producing a long range try in the space of two plays for centre Matthew Soper-Lawler. And in the end, Newcastle held on, 22-20, despite the last gasp try from Marks.

The Raiders' error count and discipline proved costly. They produced 13 errors (Knights eight) and their completion rate was again low (69 per cent, Knights 84 per cent). Canberra also conceded five penalties (Knights two). The Raiders had their opportunities, making six line breaks (Knights four) - but the Knights converted all their chances.

Dunamis Lui (125) and Leo Thompson (124) made the most metres gained in the forwards for the Raiders, with six Canberra forwards beating the 100 metre mark. Fullback Adam Cook ran for 201 metres, while Manase Kaho (147 metres gained) and Toby Marks (139 metres gained) also impressed in that department. Harry Rushton (42), Ryan James (40), Adrian Trevilyan (32) and Leo Thompson (31) topped the tackle count for Canberra.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS: Raiders v Knights: https://www.nswrl.com.au/news/2021/05/0 ... s-round-9/

This week: The Raiders were due for a bye this week, but the washed out Round 2 match against the Eels has now been scheduled for this Saturday. The Eels are coming off a 39-0 win over the North Sydney Bears. The Sydney Roosters withdrew all their top players from the Bears' team in that match due to COVID concerns in greater Sydney - placing them back in their NRL "bubble". The Eels did not and ran over the top of the Bears, scoring seven tries. The Raiders are now coming off back to back losses for the first time this year.

The Raiders and Eels met just a few weeks ago at Canberra Stadium, in Round 6, with the Green Machine running out 30-22 winners.

Season record: Raiders 3 and 4 (5th, +18)
Eels 4 and 3 (4th, +69)
Form: Raiders WLWLL
Eels WLWLW
Attacking record: Raiders 26, Eels 31 points scored per match
Defensive record: Raiders 24, Eels 21 points conceded per match

Team news: Speedster Xavier Savage will make his NSW Cup debut on the wing, while young forward Trey Mooney will also debut on the bench. Four players from the Raiders 2021 SG Ball premiership winning team will appear - with SG Ball captain, Clay Webb and Caleb Esera joining the debutants. Esera and Webb made their NSW Cup debuts earlier in the year.

Winger Elijah Anderson drops out of the team, while Manase Kaho - a late inclusion as starting winger last week - retains his place in the starting team. Props Dunamis Lui and Ryan James move back up into the NRL squad, with Leo Thompson and Ata Mariota to take on the starting prop roles. Siliva Havili has dropped out of the Raiders top 17 in first grade, and will start at hooker. Kai O'Donnell moves into his regular postion in the second row. Darby Medlyn shifts to lock. Keaton Walkington-Meads drops to 18th man, while Sila Titiuti has been omitted.

I really like that side, there's opportunities to earn the next step.

I keep saying it but I think Leo Thompson has something to offer, he's pretty mobile and built in the Taumalolo mould, 120m and 30 tackles last week not too shabby for a bloke transitioning from centre to middle

GE, my oldest dearest friend, if there is one thing you can count on, its me committing fully to my bits... What started off as a joke is now a fully fledged love affair. Webby is my guy, now and always.
Pumped to see how he and the others from the SG Ball team develop.

No, but you probably wouldn’t watch anyway seeing it is the same time as the first half of first grade.

If it was on at the same time as the second half of first grade - you would watch!!

Yeah the both played against us only a couple of weeks ago.

We were due to play Parra in Round 2 and Round 6. Never understand that although it has some excuse for NSW Cup.

I can’t fathom why a number of NRL games last week and this week are matchups that have already played this year (ie Tigers played Knights in Round 3, Warriors and Manly played for the second time last week)

Have the Covid restrictions for top 30 players playing NSW Cup in Sydney ended? The fact NSW hasn’t had any more cases plus the fact we don’t leave NSW/ACT again after this week until August means the risk has gone.

The Tigers pulled their NRL players out of NSW Cup last night just in case it goes back to level 3 by next week
