2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 2 Preview
Round 2 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the clash between the Rams and Bushrangers at Phillip on Saturday, while the game between the Sharks and Bulls at Bruce will be the live stream feature match of the weekend.
Woden Valley Rams V Tuggeranong Bushrangers, Phillip Oval
The Tuggeranong Bushrangers produced a good 36-12 win over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos last Saturday at Greenway. New hooker Cooper Purcell and former Raiders junior Niu Mariota produced strong games for the home side - with Mariota making some barnstorming runs to score a try and then to set up Julian Hayward-Whiley at the back end of the game. Hopefully Mariota finds his way back into the Raiders system quickly.
Bushrangers coach Jarrad Teka was happy with his young team's performance.
"It was not the best having the year off last year and it didn't help with our preseason but to go out there and play like the boys did today was very pleasing," Teka told The Canberra Times
"You can deal with a lot of things, but isolation when the world's been turned upside down, it took a little while to get the boys back on track. We debuted six players today. It was a fairly young team so pretty happy."
The Bushrangers now head to Phillip for the Round 2 southern derby - a clash with the Woden Valley Rams on Saturday. The Rams tasted defeat in Round 1 - losing to the Gungahlin Bulls, 32-22, in a see-sawing game. Rams five eighth Sean Maloney scored a double, while lock Siaiku Tapa was one of the best for Woden. He also got a four pointer. This game shapes as the match of the round.
Queanbeyan Blues V Yass Magpies, Seiffert Oval
The Queanbeyan Blues host the Yass Magpies at Seiffert Oval on Saturday. It'll be the first match of the season for the Magpies, after they had a bye in Round 1. The Blues produced a big 52-12 win over the Belconnen United Sharks last weekend - so it won't be an easy start to the season for Yass. Fullback Matt Parsons scored a hat trick, while hooker Josh Mitchell settled right in at Queanbeyan - having joined the Blues from the Bushrangers. The Blues scored a total of 10 tries, seven in the second half. Player-coach Terry Campese is out of the Blues line up for the next two weeks, after suffering a knee injury in Round 1. Christino Manuolevao will fill Campese's No. 6 jersey this week.
Belconnen United Sharks V Gungahlin Bulls, Bruce Oval
The Belconnen United Sharks will play their first game at their new home ground this Saturday, when they host the Gungahlin Bulls at Bruce Oval. The Sharks have adopted the old Raiders HQ at Bruce as their base this year, having been transformed into a regional high performance hub for the NSWRL. The Bulls were too strong for the Rams in Round 1 - with second rower Jack Williams the man of the match. He got a double, plus a try assist in setting up half Jordan Williams for the match winner. Fullback Tristan Eldridge also had a strong game, scoring a try. The Bulls might be a bit too strong for the Sharks in this one.
Goulburn Bulldogs V Queanbeyan Kangaroos, Goulburn Arena
The Goulburn Bulldogs notched up their first win under a new moniker, logo and colours - defeating the West Belconnen Warriors at Goulburn Arena last Sunday.
The Bulldogs went to the break with a big 22-4 lead - after scoring four tries. The Dogs had success out wide, with wingers Steven Cummins and Dom Stephens posting tries in the first half, while centre Dillon Rota made a barnstorming run to get a four pointer right on half time.
The Warriors fought back in the second forty. Five eighth John Veloudas started it off with a try in the 46th minute. Near the 60 minute mark, Warriors centre Kane Rushton then scored a double in the space of a couple of minutes - and all of a sudden it was a very tight affair. The Warriors trailed by just two, 22-20 - and could have drawn level but for a Bailey Graham conversion attempt hitting an upright. The Bulldogs weren't helped by captain coach Tyson Greenwood being sin binned, after the first of the Rushton tries. But a try to Bulldogs fullback Max Flack steadied the ship, and sealed a 28-20 victory. The Bulldogs other captain-coach Jesse Martin had a strong game in the second row, while Raiders junior forward Sila Titiuti was also impressive.
The Bulldogs are again the hosts this week, with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos making the trek north on Sunday in Round 2. The Kangaroos had some injury problems last weekend, but they still played well against the Bushies. It should be a good contest.
