Monaro Colts player/coach Terry Campese all set for Country Championships Grand Final

Monaro coach Terry Campese, who has over 150 first class games to his name, wasn’t expecting to lace up the boots for the Colts but when the side was low on troops in Round Two he stepped up the plate. This Saturday he leads his team into the 2021 Country Championships Grand Final.

“Instead of bringing a player into the squad late it was discussed within the staff that it was best that I run around,” Campese said. “The plan for me was not to play the next game but a few of the players rang me up and asked if I would consider it because they enjoyed playing beside me.”

Monaro Colts hold out Illawarra South Coast Dragons to claim Country Championship

Led by Terry Campese, the Monaro Colts have defeated Illawarra South Coast Dragons in a nail-biting 18-16 win in the Men’s Country Championships Grand Final at H.E Laybutt Field in Sydney.

Campese broke a 16-16 deadlock with a penalty goal from in front, giving the Colts a two-point lead in the 63rd minute. In a last-ditch effort, the Dragons attempted to shift the ball and make their way 80m downfield until a handling error from the Dragons all but sealed a hard fought 18-16 victory for Monaro Colts.

'Brings a tear to my eye': Terry Campese dedicates Monaro Colts Country Championship win to his nan

Joan Campese died on Friday. She wasn't there to see her grandson steer the Monaro Colts to the NSW country championships title in an 18-16 win over the Illawarra South Coast Dragons in Blacktown a day later.

"To hear the news on the way up [on Friday] was devastating. She's in a better place, it's a sad old disease, Alzheimer's. I feel really bad for my old girl, they've been a big part of my footy career, they've watched every game they could get to. It's a special moment to lift that trophy for them.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 1 Preview

Image

The Canberra Raiders Cup kicks off the 2021 season this weekend - after the competition was not played in 2020 due to the pandemic. Three teams participated in a shortened CRRL Cup - the Gungahlin Bulls, Queanbeyan Blues and Woden Valley Rams - along with a Canberra Raiders Under 20s team. An impressive Raiders Under 20s took the title in a competition that featured mostly young talent. However, all nine Canberra Raiders Cup teams will be back in a full competition this year.

In 2021 all matches will be live streamed via the Bar TV subscription service, with one match also streamed for free on the CRRL Facebook page each week. The feature match this week sees the Goulburn City Bulldogs clash with the West Belconnen Warriors on Sunday afternoon, with the other three games played on Saturday.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Queanbeyan Kangaroos, Saturday 3pm, Greenway

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers host the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Greenway on Saturday afternoon. Jarrad Teka returns to guide the Bushrangers this season - a squad that will be mostly familiar to the Bushies faithful from the 2019 season. They have recruited Cooper Purcell, a hooker who has come through the ranks of the Dragons' lower grades, while Liam Oakley will return to the club after time with the Bulldogs. Former Raider Michael Brophy lines up at fullback in Round 1, while another experienced ex-Raider, Drury Low starts at centre. Niu Mariota will feature at lock.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have a new coach and captain in season 2021. Aaron Gorrell spent almost a decade as a captain and coach of the Roos, winning three premierships along the way. But Gorrell has headed to the Cooma Stallions in 2021 - with Adam Taylor taking over the coaching reins at Freebody Oval. Taylor was the captain-coach of the Kangaroos for three seasons, before he moved to arch rivals, the Queanbeyan Blues in 2010.

"There's definitely some unfinished business," Taylor told The Canberra Times.

"When I came to the Roos it was an absolute mess, they hadn't won a game in two years. I was only 27 at the time and I've since done a lot of growing up. I'm chuffed to be back to where it started. Of the clubs I've been involved in, the Roos, Blues and Goulburn, they're the pick of them for me. The culture at the Roos when I left was the best and I want to continue to build that culture."

Hooker Lachie Ingram has been appointed captain, after turning out for the Blues last year in the CRRL Cup. The Roos have also recruited experienced prop Aidan Woods and Michael Cullen from their east Queanbeyan rivals.

Queanbeyan Blues V Belconnen United Sharks, Saturday 3pm, Seiffert Oval

Former Canberra Raiders captain, Terry Campese, 36, continues as coach of the Queanbeyan Blues in 2021. His team hosts the Belconnen United Sharks at Seiffert on Saturday. Campese has just coached the Monaro Colts to the Country Championships title - and played in the final two matches. He wasn't supposed to be playing, but Campo stepped into the breach after some of the squad became unavailable. He’s still got it, even though the legs are not what they were. Hanging up the boots is clearly hard to do for him. He admits he can "never help himself". He's lining up in Round 1 at five eighth, while Josh Mitchell is starting at hooker, after switching from the Bushrangers. Isiaha Latu, who has impressed his coach in the off season, starts at lock.

Meanwhile, the Belconnen United Sharks have adopted the old Raiders HQ at Bruce as their home ground in 2021 - with the facility transforming into a hub for the NSWRL in the region. Former Raiders prop Scott Logan is back as coach of the Sharks, while another former Raiders forward, Shaun Fensom takes the role of experienced on field leader. The Sharks have struggled to be competitive in recent years, but Logan and Fensom will be aiming to turn that around in 2021. Fensom will start in his favourite spot in Round 1 - at lock.

Gungahlin Bulls V Woden Valley Rams, Saturday 3pm, Gungahlin

The Gungahlin Bulls made the Grand Final of the CRRL Cup last year, and most of the young players who featured in the 2019 campaign will be back under the tutealage of head coach Neil Bijorac. Half Tre Williams, hooker Zac Patch and fullback Tristan Eldridge all featured in the Monaro Colts Country Championship team, and will be key players for the Bulls. Jordan Williams joins Tre in the halves in Round 1, while Jack Williams will start in the second row.

The Rams travel to Gungahlin Enclosed for their Round 1 clash with the Bulls. Former Raiders winger Ken Nagas again takes the head coach role at the Woden Valley Rams in 2021, with captain Steve Ferry leading the team on field. The Rams will feature prop Brad Prior and half Brayden Robertson - also Monaro representatives earlier this year. Ferry and Prior are the starting props this week, with Robertson lines up at halfback.

Goulburn Bulldogs V West Belconnen Warriors, Sunday 3pm, Goulburn

The Goulburn Bulldogs have restructured and in 2021 and will go by the moniker of the Goulburn City Bulldogs - with a new logo and colours. Forward Tyson Greenwood and utility Jesse Martin will be the new captain-coaches. Tyson Greenwood is a very familiar figure at the Bulldogs. Jesse Martin planned to join his twin brother Matt at the Bulldogs in 2020, before the pandemic led to the cancellation of the Canberra Raiders Cup last year. The Raiders junior now lines up in the second row - alongside Greenwood - this Sunday against the West Belconnen Warriors at Goulburn Arena.

Former Raiders back Matt Gafa has the coaching reins at the Warriors, with experienced middle forward Josh Ayers moving from the Queanbeyan Roos to lead the team up front at prop. Nic Whatman will steer the team from dummy half in Round 1.

The Greenhouse will again be going around the grounds to cover the Canberra Raiders Cup matches whenever we can this season. Watch for our coverage on @TheGHRaiders on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, while we also provide live scores on Twitter via @CanberraCup.

Very good to see Niu Mariota lining up for the Bushrangers. Had heard he'd signed for the Bulldogs. Hopefully, that means he's taken the option of fighting his way back into the Raiders juniors. Very good to see.

New-look Goulburn City Bulldogs primed for fast start against West Belconnen Warriors in Canberra Raiders Cup opener

The new-look Goulburn City Bulldogs captain-coach partnership of Tyson Greenwood and Jesse Martin will be on show this Sunday as they host West Belconnen.

"We are a young side, it's good, we've got a lot of local guys and we have a really good junior base," Martin said. "We missed out on our last trial game [but] everyone's ready for a physical game."

Fighting fit Shaun Fensom ready to fire for Belconnen United Sharks

Former Raiders ironman Shaun Fensom will return to the rugby league circle on Saturday - this time to "have a bit of fun" and spend some quality time with his family. The retired NRL star lines up for the Belconnen United Sharks.

"I'm looking to have a bit of fun and pass on a bit of knowledge to some of the younger players who want to learn," Fensom said.

Indeed, Levi Koloutolu turning out for the Sharks... he's a very good talent. And Enseli Kamuta also turning out for the Bushies. It's impressive to see that all three are prepared to do some hard yards.

Sione Tapuosi quickly switched to the Eels.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers too good in season opener as Queanbeyan Kangaroos lose more to injury

An impressive Tuggeranong delivered the injury-ravaged Queanbeyan Kangaroos a sobering defeat at Greenway Oval on Saturday as both sides took the field for the first time since 2019.

"It was not the best having the year off last year and it didn't help with our preseason but to go out there and play like the boys did today was very pleasing. We debuted six players today," Bushrangers coach Jarrad Teka said.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 2 Preview

Image

Round 2 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the clash between the Rams and Bushrangers at Phillip on Saturday, while the game between the Sharks and Bulls at Bruce will be the live stream feature match of the weekend.

Woden Valley Rams V Tuggeranong Bushrangers, Phillip Oval

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers produced a good 36-12 win over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos last Saturday at Greenway. New hooker Cooper Purcell and former Raiders junior Niu Mariota produced strong games for the home side - with Mariota making some barnstorming runs to score a try and then to set up Julian Hayward-Whiley at the back end of the game. Hopefully Mariota finds his way back into the Raiders system quickly.

Bushrangers coach Jarrad Teka was happy with his young team's performance.

"It was not the best having the year off last year and it didn't help with our preseason but to go out there and play like the boys did today was very pleasing," Teka told The Canberra Times.

"You can deal with a lot of things, but isolation when the world's been turned upside down, it took a little while to get the boys back on track. We debuted six players today. It was a fairly young team so pretty happy."

The Bushrangers now head to Phillip for the Round 2 southern derby - a clash with the Woden Valley Rams on Saturday. The Rams tasted defeat in Round 1 - losing to the Gungahlin Bulls, 32-22, in a see-sawing game. Rams five eighth Sean Maloney scored a double, while lock Siaiku Tapa was one of the best for Woden. He also got a four pointer. This game shapes as the match of the round.

Queanbeyan Blues V Yass Magpies, Seiffert Oval

The Queanbeyan Blues host the Yass Magpies at Seiffert Oval on Saturday. It'll be the first match of the season for the Magpies, after they had a bye in Round 1. The Blues produced a big 52-12 win over the Belconnen United Sharks last weekend - so it won't be an easy start to the season for Yass. Fullback Matt Parsons scored a hat trick, while hooker Josh Mitchell settled right in at Queanbeyan - having joined the Blues from the Bushrangers. The Blues scored a total of 10 tries, seven in the second half. Player-coach Terry Campese is out of the Blues line up for the next two weeks, after suffering a knee injury in Round 1. Christino Manuolevao will fill Campese's No. 6 jersey this week.

Belconnen United Sharks V Gungahlin Bulls, Bruce Oval

The Belconnen United Sharks will play their first game at their new home ground this Saturday, when they host the Gungahlin Bulls at Bruce Oval. The Sharks have adopted the old Raiders HQ at Bruce as their base this year, having been transformed into a regional high performance hub for the NSWRL. The Bulls were too strong for the Rams in Round 1 - with second rower Jack Williams the man of the match. He got a double, plus a try assist in setting up half Jordan Williams for the match winner. Fullback Tristan Eldridge also had a strong game, scoring a try. The Bulls might be a bit too strong for the Sharks in this one.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Queanbeyan Kangaroos, Goulburn Arena

The Goulburn Bulldogs notched up their first win under a new moniker, logo and colours - defeating the West Belconnen Warriors at Goulburn Arena last Sunday.

The Bulldogs went to the break with a big 22-4 lead - after scoring four tries. The Dogs had success out wide, with wingers Steven Cummins and Dom Stephens posting tries in the first half, while centre Dillon Rota made a barnstorming run to get a four pointer right on half time.

The Warriors fought back in the second forty. Five eighth John Veloudas started it off with a try in the 46th minute. Near the 60 minute mark, Warriors centre Kane Rushton then scored a double in the space of a couple of minutes - and all of a sudden it was a very tight affair. The Warriors trailed by just two, 22-20 - and could have drawn level but for a Bailey Graham conversion attempt hitting an upright. The Bulldogs weren't helped by captain coach Tyson Greenwood being sin binned, after the first of the Rushton tries. But a try to Bulldogs fullback Max Flack steadied the ship, and sealed a 28-20 victory. The Bulldogs other captain-coach Jesse Martin had a strong game in the second row, while Raiders junior forward Sila Titiuti was also impressive.

The Bulldogs are again the hosts this week, with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos making the trek north on Sunday in Round 2. The Kangaroos had some injury problems last weekend, but they still played well against the Bushies. It should be a good contest.

The Greenhouse will again be going around the grounds to cover the Canberra Raiders Cup matches whenever we can this season. Watch for our coverage on @TheGHRaiders on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, while we also provide live scores on Twitter via @CanberraCup.

Bijorac's Bulls down Sharks to stay unbeaten in Canberra Raiders Cup

A fast-finishing Gungahlin Bulls capitalised on the sin-binning of Belconnen United Sharks winger Levi Kaloutolu to notch a 40-22 win at the old Raiders headquarters on Saturday. It continued the Bulls' perfect start to the season, but coach Bijorac said his side was still far from the finished product.

"We put ourselves under too much pressure, we had eight or nine dropped balls and I think five or six of them were in their 20, you can't turn over that much ball," Bijorac said.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 3 Preview

Image

Round 3 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the top of the table clash between the Blues and Bulldogs at Seiffert on Saturday, while the game between the Bushrangers and Magpies at Walker Park will be the live stream feature match of the weekend.

Queanbeyan Blues v Goulburn Bulldogs

The Queanbeyan Blues and Goulburn Bulldogs have a share of the competition lead after two rounds - and now face off at Seiffert Oval. The Blues had a big, 40-6 win over the Yass Magpies in their last outing, with fullback Matt Parsons, centre Cyprian Ale and winger George Morseau all picking up doubles. Coach Terry Campese was missing from the playing field due to injury, but experienced hooker Josh Mitchell led the way. Big wins over the Belconnen United Sharks and the Magpies in the opening rounds have seen the Blues take first place on the ladder, due to points differential. But they now face a tougher assignment against the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs produced a solid 44-30 victory over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Goulburn Arena in Round 2. Hooker Ryan Griffin led the way for the home side, scoring back to back tries inside the opening 12 minutes. The Roos struck back through their own hooker, Jesse Dent, on the back of a couple of penalties - reducing the gap to six points. In the 23rd minute, Goulburn five eighth Thomas Croker was put perfectly into a gap by dummy half Griffin for a four pointer. Five minutes later, Roos half Sione Vuki kept the visitors in the game, converting his own try. But tries to bench forward Jack Peppernell and centre Isaac Walker delivered an imposing 28-12 lead to Goulburn.

Five minutes into the second half, Bulldogs winger Dom Stephens took an intercept and ran 30 metres to score - extending the lead to 20 points. From there it was always going to be difficult for the Kangaroos to come back - but they kept trying to until the end. A crash ball put Roos prop Zachary Noble over under the posts in the 50th minute. But two tries in the space of five minutes - to a flying fullback, Max Flack, and Thomas Croker - saw the Bulldogs take a 44-18 lead with just under 20 minutes remaining. Late Kangaroos tries to Jesse Dent and winger Temple Rupapera were too little, too late.

This should be a good test for both teams, but we'll tip the Blues at home in this one.

Season record: Blues 2 and 0 (1st, +74)
Bulldogs 2 and 0 (3rd, +22)
Form: Blues WW
Bulls WW
Attacking record: Blues 46, Bulldogs 36 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 9, Bulldogs 25 points conceded per match

Yass Magpies V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Magpies host the Bushrangers at Walker Park for their first home game of the season. They had a big loss to the Blues in their season opener last week, with their only try, to hooker David Barrie, coming late in the game. They will be keen to make amends in front of their home crowd this week.

"It's going to be a tough match, they've got some big boys," Magpies captain Willie Peace said this week.

"We know we're not the biggest team in the comp but what we lack in size we’re happy to make up for in other areas. Hopefully we get the ball rolling this week in executing our game plan."

"Yass is a pretty tight knit community so everyone gets around the team and the club. If anything I think we've got a lot more support this year."

"We're expecting a big crowd of local supporters coming out to support the boys so fingers crossed we can get the result for the team and the club."

The Bushrangers had an impressive win over the Kangaroos in Round 1. However, they suffered a 26-22 loss to the Woden Valley Rams in a very tight affair at Phillip last weekend. Niu Mariota again impressed for the Bushies, scoring a try, while five eighth Wez Alexander-McCarthy got himself a double.

"We got a bad result last week, we lost in a few effort areas that we are not happy about," Bushrangers second rower Jacob McGrath said this week.

"It's all been about making up for those one percenters, that’s where we failed last weekend. It'll be a good battle, it's always tough going out to Yass."

Expect the Bushrangers to be too strong in this clash.

Season record: Magpies 0 and 1 (7th, -34)
Bushrangers 1 and 1 (4th, +20)
Form: Magpies BL
Bushrangers WL
Attacking record: Magpies 6, Bushrangers 29 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 40, Bushrangers 19 points conceded per match

Woden Valley Rams V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

After recording their first win of the season against the Bushrangers in Round 2, the Woden Valley Rams are again at home this week - and will host the winless Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The Rams had a 10 point loss to the Gungahlin Bulls in their season opener, but just managed to get over the top of their southern rivals last weekend. The Rams led 26-18 with just a minute left on the clock, before Wez Alexander-McCarthy crossed for his second try of the afternoon. And despite the Bushrangers having one final shot at scoring, the Rams managed to hold on. Halfback Brayden Robertson steered his team around well, while centres Aiden Agnew and Lachlan Eveston scored doubles. The Kangaroos have had some injury problems and effort has certainly not been a problem in their opening matches. They've looked good at stages, but have been conceding too many points. We'll tip the Rams at home in this one.

Season record: Rams 1 and 1 (5th, -6)
Kangaroos 0 and 2 (8th, -38)
Form: Rams LW
Kangaroos LL
Attacking record: Rams 24, Kangaroos 21 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 27, Kangaroos 40 points conceded per match

Gungahlin Bulls V West Belconnen Warriors

After making the CRRL Grand Final in 2020, the Gungahlin Bulls have got off to a good start in 2021. They have a share of the competition lead after wins over the Rams and the Sharks. Last weekend, the Sharks put up a good effort, but the Bulls were ultimately too strong in the final stages.

The Bulls led 28-16 with around 10 minutes left on the clock, before a try to Sharks winger PK Amponn-Nyamekye saw the gap narrow to just six points. But late tries to Jordan Williams and winger Todd Sherd sealed it for Gungahlin. In the end, the score line probably did not reflect the closeness of the contest. The Williams trio, Tre, Jordan and Jack, again orchestrated proceedings for the Bulls.

The West Belconnen Warriors had the bye last weekend, after falling to the Bulldogs at Goulburn in Round 1. They'll want to get themselves on the winners' list for the first time when they travel to Gungahlin on Saturday. Given the form of the Bulls, however, I'll tip Gungahlin to continue on their winning ways.

Season record: Bulls 2 and 0 (2nd, +26)
Warriors 0 and 1 (6th, -8)
Form: Bulls WW
Warriors LB
Attacking record: Bulls 36, Warriors 20 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 23, Warriors 28 points conceded per match

Yass Magpies set to soar in Canberra Raiders Cup comeback

Yass Magpies captain Willie Peace hopes his side can soar in their return to Walker Park on a landmark day for the club.

"We didn't have a team, we lost a few boys. Just having the year off we realised they didn't have to play footy any more," Peace said.

MATCH REPORT: Yass Magpies score last minute try to beat Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Yass Magpies have defeated the Tuggeranong Bushrangers 42-40 in a thriller at Walker Park on Saturday. With five minutes remaining the Bushrangers lead 40-32, but two quick tries saw the Magpies snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Cooper Harris scored the winning try on the final play of the game.

The Gungahlin Bulls also produced a last minute try to snatch victory, while the Queanbeyan Blues won the top of the table clash with the Goulburn Bulldogs. The Blues trailed with 20 minutes remaining, but finished far the stronger in the final quarter to take a 38-20 victory.

Queanbeyan Blues produce late surge to overhaul Goulburn Bulldogs at Seiffert

A 26-point blitz in the final 20 minutes helped the injury-hit Queanbeyan Blues overhaul a determined Goulburn on Saturday, and maintain their unbeaten start to the year.

"We still haven't had the perfect game or played consistently for the 80 minutes. I was impressed with some of the attitudes today, especially in defence, there was that one that stood out where Parso [fullback Matthew Parsons] chased their winger down from the other side of the field." player coach Terry Campese said, who is six weeks away from returning from a PCL injury.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 4 Preview

Image

Round 4 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the clash between the Bushrangers and the Blues at Greenway, while the game between the Warriors and Rams at Kippax will be the live stream feature match of the weekend.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Queanbeyan Blues

The Queanbeyan Blues prevailed in the top of the table clash with the Goulburn Bulldogs at Seiffert in Round 3 - and maintained their hold on top spot on the ladder. The Bulldogs had a 20-18 lead at the 60 minute mark, but the Blues finished by far the stronger. Queanbeyan scored four tries in the final stages of the match - with Charlie Woolford, Josh Baker, Cyprian Ale and Atu Tupou all crossing. The Blues head to Greenway in Round 4 for a clash with the fifth placed Tuggeranaong Bushrangers.

The Bushrangers put in a strong performance against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in their season opener, but they've now lost back to back. Coach Jarrad Teka would not have been happy with the finish last week against the Yass Magpies - nor the defence. The Bushies led 40-32 with five minutes remaining - but a try to prop Manu Vanisi closed the gap to just four points. And then in the final seconds of the game, second rower Cooper Harris scored, chasing a Josh Fattore kick. That levelled the match and the conversion from Shaun Davis delivered the last gasp, 42-40, victory for the home team. Cooper Purcell again performed strongly for the Bushrangers, while Niu Mariota, Oscar Schmidt and Julian Haywood-Whiley all scored doubles.

The Blues are rolling along nicely despite the loss of player coach Terry Campese to injury, while the Bushrangers have now had narrow losses to the Rams (26-22) and Magpies. This should be a good contest, but the Blues will be favourites in this one.

Season record: Bushrangers 1 and 2 (5th, +18)
Blues 2 and 0 (1st, +92)
Form: Bushrangers WLL
Blues WWW
Attacking record: Bushrangers 33, Blues 43 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 27, Blues 13 points conceded per match

West Belconnen Warriors V Woden Valley Rams

The West Belconnen Warriors are yet to win a match so far in 2021. They lost their season opener to the Bulldogs, 28-20, at Goulburn - and suffered a last second, 34-30, loss to the Bulls at Gungahlin last weekend. The Warriors made a good comeback in the second half, twice taking the lead inside the final 15 minutes. But a spectacular try from Tre Holten-Williams - finishing a movement that went 70 metres downfield - broke the Warriors' hearts. Lock Kirren Roughley and veteran forward Josh Ayers were strong for the Warriors. The Warriors now host the Woden Valley Rams at Kippax - with the match commencing at the special, earlier time, to accommodate the Canberra Raiders NSW Cup match against the Rabbitohs. Kick off in NSW Cup will be at 4pm.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos produced something of an upset last weekend, defeating the Rams, 26-12, at Phillip. It was a tight affair in the first half, with the scores locked at 6-6 at the break. But the Roos then piled on four consecutive tries, taking a 26-6 lead by the 60th minute. A consolation try to centre Aidan Agnew was the only joy for the Rams in the second half. The Rams have only one win to their name this season - a 26-22 win over the Bushrangers in Round 2.

Neither of these teams are really in top form, but their losses haven't been by large margins. The home ground advantage might prove the difference for the Warriors.

Season record: Warriors 0 and 2 (6th, -10)
Rams 1 and 2 (7th, -20)
Form: Warriors LBL
Rams LWL
Attacking record: Warriors 25, Rams 20 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 30, Rams 27 points conceded per match

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Belconnen United Sharks

Coming off their first win of the season, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos host the Belconnen Sharks at Freebody Oval this Saturday. This is a battle between the two teams at the bottom of the ladder, but the Roos will be hoping to build in this game. The Sharks have suffered some big losses to the Blues (52-12) and Bulls (40-24) in the opening two rounds - but the Belconnen outfit did put in a strong showing for much of their clash with the Bulls. They are coming off a bye this week - but it probably didn't come at the best time for them. Expect the Kangaroos to be too strong, at home.

Season record: Kangaroos 1 and 2 (8th, -24)
Sharks 0 and 2, (9th, -56)
Form: Kangaroos LLW
Sharks LLB
Attacking record: Kangaroos 23, Sharks 18 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 31, Sharks 46 points conceded per match

Gungahlin Bulls V Yass Magpies

The Gungahlin Bulls have started the season with three wins in a row - but they had a narrow escape last weekend against the Warriors. They are level with the Blues on six competition points, with points differential pushing them into secoond place on the ladder. The Magpies also produced a last gasp victory in Round 3, with winger Bruce Barrie the try scoring star. He bagged four in the high scoring match. While the Magpies sit in fourth place, they'll need to improve significantly if they hope to remain in the top four. They have leaked 40 points in both of their matches. The Bulls should win this contest at home, and win well.

Season record: Bulls 3 and 0 (2nd, +28)
Magpies 1 and 1 (4th, -32)
Form: Bulls WWW
Magpies BLW
Attacking record: Bulls 35, Magpies 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 25, Magpies 40 points conceded per match

Canberra Raiders Cup tackling concussion issue with introduction of 18th man

The Canberra Raiders Cup has implemented an 18th man policy to help clubs deal with failed head injury assessments. But unlike the NRL, Canberra Raiders Cup sides can use their fifth bench member after just one player cops a head knock and is unable to pass the assessment.

"We have a duty of care to the players and as a sport we are probably one of the best prepared to handle concussion, with all of our trainers level one or two qualified," CRRL boss Mark Vergano said.

West Belconnen Warriors too strong for Woden Valley Rams in first Hardy Cup

The Warriors claimed the inaugural Brad Hardy Cup, beating the Woden Valley Rams 30-12 at Kippax on Saturday. Hardy, the son of Yass Magpies coach Cameron Hardy, played juniors for both clubs, but tragically died in a motor vehicle accident in March.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 5 Preview

Image

Round 5 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the clash between the Bulldogs and Bulls at Goulburn on Sunday, while the Queanbeyan derby between the Blues and Kangaroos on Saturday will be the live stream feature match of the weekend.

Yass Magpies V West Belconnen Warriors

The Yass Magpies host the West Belconnen Warriors at Walker Park on Saturday. Both teams have produced just one win so far this season. The Magpies produced a last gasp, two point, victory over the Bushrangers in Round 3, scoring two tries inside the final five minutes. However, they are coming off a two point defeat at the hands of the Gungahlin Bulls last weekend.

The Magpies went to the break with a 16-12 lead, after finishing the first half with three consecutive tries to lock Mitchell Turner, five eighth Charlie Shepherd and winger Bruce Barrie. The Bulls went to a 28-16 lead after producing three tries of their own in the opening 10 minutes of the second half - but the match continued to see-saw. Two tries to the Magpies in the final 10 minutes of the match to second rower Cooper Harris and Barrie were not enough to overcome the home team. The Bulls held on for a 36-34 victory. Prop Manu Vanisi was one of the strongest for Yass, while Bruce Barrie scored a double.

The West Belconnen Warriors produced their first win of the year last Saturday at Kippax, defeating the Woden Valley Rams, 30-12. The Warriors took a 12-0 lead by the 20 minute mark, courtesy of tries to Kane Rushton and Tim Sloman. The Rams hit back in the 28th minute when five eighth Sean Maloney crossed - but the home side took a 14-6 lead to the half time break. Rams bench forward Andrew Chard charged over under the posts just four minutes into the second half - reducing the Warriors' lead to two. But that was all she wrote for the Rams. The Warriors scored three tries in the final 25 minutes - to Sloman, second rower Kiarn Wilson and Logan Reis - to secure a comprehensive victory.

These teams are fairly evenly matched, and the home ground advantage helps the Magpies. But the Warriors were only just beaten by the Bulls in Round 3, and were not far off the Bulldogs in the season opener. It should be a good contest.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 2 (6th, -34)
Warriors 1 and 2 (4th, +8)
Form: Magpies BLWL
Warriors LBLW
Attacking record: Magpies 27, Warriors 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 39, Warriors points conceded per match

Queanbeyan Blues V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Queanbeyan derby is always eagerly awaited - as both teams have been powerhouses of the competition for the past decade. The Blues host the Kangaroos at Seiffert on Saturday in a clash between first and fifth on the ladder.

The Blues are undefeated this season and sit on top of the competition ladder. They are clearly the No. 1 team in both attack and defence. They have scored 40 or more points in three games, and were two shy of that mark in the other. They hit 60 in the clash with the Bushrangers at Greenway last weekend, while conceding just one try. Prop Richard Holani got a hat trick, while half Charlie Woolford, winger Cyprian Ale and fullback Matt Parsons all got doubles. They scored 11 tries in all. Parsons now has eight tries in four games and is the competition's leading try scorer. Woolford - the son of former Raiders captain and Blues coach, Simon - was one of the stars.

The Kangaroos are coming off a 24-18 win over the Belconnen United Sharks at Freebody Oval - and have now posted back to back victories after losing their opening two matches. The Roos led the Sharks 18-8 at half time, and 24-8 with only a few minutes remaining. Two late tries for the Sharks proved to be some consolation only for the visitors.

These Queanbeyan derbies are always fiercely contested, but it is difficult to see anything other than a win for the Blues this weekend.

Season record: Blues 4 and 0 (1st, +146)
Kangaroos 2 and 2 (5th, -18)
Form: Blues WWWW
Kangaroos LLWW
Attacking record: Blues 48, Kangaroos 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 11, Kangaroos 28 points conceded per match

Belconnen United Sharks V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Belconnen Sharks host the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at their new home of Bruce Oval - the old Raiders HQ - on Saturday. The win-less Sharks conceded big scores in their opening two matches, but it was at least a better performance in defence last weekend against the Kangaroos. They still conceded four tries. The Bushies started the season with a solid win over the Kangaroos, and then suffered narrow losses to the Rams and Magpies. But they were blown off the park last weekend by the Blues. The Bushrangers, however, should turn things around this weekend.

Season record: Sharks 0 and 3 (9th, -62)
Bushrangers 1 and 3, (5th, -18)
Form: Sharks LLBL
Bushrangers WLLL
Attacking record: Sharks 18, Bushrangers 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 39, Bushrangers 28 points conceded per match

Goulburn Bulldogs V Gungahlin Bulls

The Gungahlin Bulls are undefeated this year, and are only second to the Blues on the competition ladder on points differential. They've had some close shaves in the past couple of weeks, and only beat the Magpies last weekend by two. They now travel to Goulburn for a meeting with the Bulldogs on Sunday. The Bulldogs are coming off the bye. They suffered their first loss of the season in their last outing - going down to the Blues, 38-20. That's closer than any other team have got to the Blues this year. It's a top four clash and it should be a beauty. The numbers says the Bulls should win, but the home ground advantage might prove crucial for the Bulldogs.

Season record: Bulldogs 2 and 1 (3rd, +4)
Bulls 4 and 0 (2nd, +30)
Form: Bulldogs WWLB
Bulls WWWW
Attacking record: Bulldogs 31, Bulls 35 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 29, Bulls 28 points conceded per match
