Yeah they sure were. We got a penalty in front with about 3-4 mins to go and I was shocked we didn’t just take the two. We were totally out of petrol.

Massive loss with Clarkson today, Savage will probably be a couple of weeks.

Awful to see the Illawarra bloke do his knee today too. So innocuous. Just went for a catch and as soon as he landed it went.

If we can get some troops back, as most other sides play their best 19 year olds in Jersey Flegg, I suspect we are the team to beat.

Hope both the injured players (Clarkson and Savage) can recover in time for finals.

First time seeing Sandford play and I saw enough. Great recruitment.
Moala is ready for higher competition and worked well with Thorburn who needs to kick less.

Agree Sandford was good as was Saddler.

Also big shout out to Jack McDougall in 19. I would have thought to be honest, if Mooney and Esera were in the side and we hadn’t have needed move on a few guys who played up, McDougall would be a fair way from the side. But when Clarkson went down, McDougall just ripped in and make so many tough carries and played big minutes.

It is that sort of spirit from lesser likes that builds character in teams. Great stuff.

I think JJ will be massive odds to play any more footy this season. Savage should be back and his one move was all class.

Yeah thought he was good, big body for a half. Will wait to see a bit more before making more of a judgement about whether he can progress past this grade.

It was a very good performance. The 10 points we conceded were when Savage went off and Connor Williams went to the wing. He is not a winger. They jumped all over him.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale team was defeated by the Illawarra Steelers, 28-16, last Saturday at Kippax. It was a fairly close contest in the first half with both teams scoring two tries - and goal kicking proving the difference to the 12-8 half time lead for the Steelers. But the Raiders could not keep pace after the break. The Steelers' speedy fullback Teegan Berry scored an impressive hat trick - and the Raiders gave her too much room, too often. Madyson Tooth opened the scoring for the Raiders in the 13th minute, with a very good run on the last tackle. The best try for the Green Machine was scored 10 minutes later, with winger Chloe Muggleton making a great break down the scoreboard touchline. Captain Krystal Blackwell scored a cheeky consolation try in the final minute, taking off from the scrum base for an incisive run. But by then it was all too late.

Round 3 Tarsha Gale Cup highlights: https://www.nswrl.com.au/news/2021/02/2 ... a-gale-r3/

The Raiders are yet to produce a win in this grade in 2021, and are placed seventh in a nine team competition. Canberra did not lose by much in the opening two rounds, but some crucial errors have proven costly. The Green Machine now meets the eighth placed Canterbury Bulldogs - another team yet to record a win. The Bulldogs suffered a 26-12 loss to the Wests Tigers last Saturday at Leichhardt Oval. The Raiders have won two of the three clashes played against the Bulldogs in this competition - but the Bulldogs won the last contest, 16-12, in Round 5 last year at Belmore.

18. Mitchell Hyslop 19. Aiafi Pomale 20. Papasees Tamaseu

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have lost their three opening matches of the season in Harold Matthews - one of three teams yet to get a win. They suffered a big 38-6 loss at the hands of the Illawarra Steelers last Saturday on a very warm day at Kippax. It was pretty much all one way traffic, with the Raiders conceding seven tries. Canberra scored a consolation try inside the last 10 minutes, when half Leroy Murray kicked ahead for himself. He regathered to score after the ball took an awkward turn - and he converted his own try. Canberra sits in last place on the ladder and now travel to Sydney for a meeting with the 12th placed North Sydney Bears. The Bears have one win to their name this season - a 24-20 win over the Sharks at Cronulla last Saturday. The Raiders have won three of the past four matches against the Bears - but lost the last encounter, 26-12, in Round 3 of 2019 at Mascot.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders SG Ball team are on top of the SG Ball ladder, after opening the season with three wins in a row. The Raiders produced a big 36-10 victory over the Illawarra Steelers at a very hot Kippax last Saturday. It was a strong performance from the young Green Machine, considering the loss of prop Jayden Clarkson (ankle) and centre Xavier Savage (hamstring) during the match.

In his debut in green, Savage showed what all the excitement has been about, scoring the first try of the match, after just three minutes. He is elusive and speedy and both were clearly on display. Unfortunately he left the field shortly afterwards, with a hamstring problem. The Steelers quickly fought back, with tries to centre Brandon Morkos and winger Cooper Tunbridge - taking a 10-6 lead after 15 minutes. But the Raiders gradually re-asserted control, with tries to Mitchell Prest and Connor Williams, in the space of three minutes, delivering an 18-10 lead for the home team at the break. It was not all easy going for the Raiders in the second half, but they were able to keep the Steelers scoreless, while piling on four tries themselves. Half Sione Moala and hooker Toby Thorburn were busy, while Noah Saddler and Clay Webb impressed in the second row. Moala, Webb and Saddler all scored well deserved second half tries.

Round 3 SG Ball highlights: https://www.nswrl.com.au/news/2021/02/2 ... g-ball-r3/

The Raiders are the only team with a perfect 3-0 record. In Round 4, they head to Macquarie University for a clash with the North Sydney Bears. The Bears are yet to post a win, and sit in 14th place on the ladder. The Bears suffered a huge 50-6 loss to the Sharks last weekend at Cronulla, conceding nine tries, six in the second half. However, they only lost by two points to the Eels in Round 2. The Raiders have a 3-0 recent record against the Bears. Canberra won the last clash between the clubs, 28-20, back in Round 9 of 2018 at North Sydney Oval.

Seems to be getting good reviews for his Matts performances this year off the bench... interesting that he's switching clubs at this point.

Junior Reps Round Four Preview

The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews Cup side travel to Wollongong to face the North Sydney Bears this Saturday.

“The squad from last year has changed significantly and we’ve got more local kids in the group this year,” coach David Small said. “Those kids are adjusting to playing junior reps compared to playing just local footy.”

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale team won their first match of the season on Saturday - defeating the Canterbury Bulldogs, 24-12, in Sydney. The Raiders took a 16-0 advantage to the break, with centre Madyson Tooth scoring a double. The Bulldogs got themselves back into the game shortly after half time, with two tries in the space of two minutes. But tries to benchie Teliya Hetaraka and centre Valasi Asomua wrapped up the victory.

They maintained seventh place on the ladder - and are still in the hunt for a top six finish. However, things don't get any easier this week, when the Raiders host the undefeated Newcastle Knights at Kippax. The Raiders are yet to defeat the Knights in this grade, with the Knights winning 20-4 in the last encounter between the clubs - back in Round 6 last year.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have lost their four opening matches of the season in Harold Matthews - one of three teams yet to get a win. Last Saturday, they suffered a 28-16 loss to the North Sydney Bears, after trailing by just two points at the break. The Bears scored the first three tries of the game, but the Green Machine struck back with tries to Clay Sing in the 20th minute, and centre Siamani Leuluai four minutes later. A try to halfback Leroy Murray 10 minutes into the second half, kept the Raiders right in the match. But a double to Bears winger Tomasi Tupou sealed it for North Sydney. In Round 5, the Raiders host the seventh placed Knights - a team with a 3 and 1 record so far in 2021. The Knights have won four of the past five matches between the two clubs, with the other match drawn. The Knights won in Round 6 last year, 14-4, at Cessnock.

They scored a total of 12 tries, with captain Clay Webb and centre Deaking Bright getting hat tricks. Michael Asomua and Joshua Billing both scored doubles.

The Raiders are the only team with a perfect 4-0 record. In Round 5, they meet the eighth placed Newcastle Knights at Kippax. The Knights have a 2 and 2 record this season - and are coming off a 26-20 loss to the Rabbitohs at Redfern last Saturday. The Raiders have won two of the past three matches between the clubs in this grade - but they have not met since the Knights won, 44-12, in Round 8 of 2018 at Seiffert Oval.

I know it is included above, but just to highlight that the games on Saturday are at Seiffert Oval not Raiders Belconnen as per some of the earlier versions of the fixture.

It is not as if they are around the corner from each other if you go to the wrong one!!

Junior Reps Round Five Preview

Fresh from having dispatched the North Sydney Bears 56-12, SG Ball coach Ash Barnes is pleased with his sides recent improvement in defence.

“It’s one of the things that we’ve talked about extensively in the pre-season and into the season,” coach Ash Barnes said. “We weren’t happy with our first game where we leaked 24 points – that’s something that isn’t up to the standard of what we try and set ourselves.”

7th min TRY KNIGHTS to centre Preston Conn out wide. It is off the back of a penalty. Great conversion from Ethan Ferguson.

Drinks break at the 16th minute... the Raiders have settled but they still trail by 12. Cool breeze today, but probably warm out on the field. Perfect blue skies.

12 minutes to the break, the Raiders made another error in their own half, but they defended the error well. Rucking it out of their own end.

11 minutes to the break, good kick for touch... but it’s a centimetre too long. Puts the Raiders on the back foot again.

21st min TRY KNIGHTS to second rower Cooper Bigeni following the kick to the try line. The Raiders putting themselves under pressure through errors. Converted Ferguson.

27th min TRY KNIGHTS to Ethan Ferguson. It’s an intercept and he runs 80 metres to score out wide. Canberra’s Blake Halls didn’t ever give up the chase. Ferguson converts his own try from out wide.

30th min TRY RAIDERS to centre Hunter Marsh in the corner right on half time. The Knights made a rare error and were then penalised in the red zone for a clear professional foul. Converted from the sideline by Leroy Murray.
