Junior Representatives Round 7 Preview

The Raiders Harold Matthews Cup side won’t be appearing in the finals this season, but they're a young squad with potential.

“There’s a few boys that could make the next step into SG Ball next season. I’ve got five in the squad that are a year young so they’ll be back next year. All of them have been outstanding this year so the future is looking pretty bright,” coach David Small said.

Really is teaming down in Sydney, but HE Laybutt Field still in superb condition. Thought the Colts might have been steamrolled after the fast start from Central Coast... but they’ve held on, and were threatening at times.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have had two weeks off, after their Round 7 clash with the Dragons was washed out and the scheduled Round 8 bye. The Round 9 match against the Roosters Indigenous Academy was to be the Raiders' last game of the regular season - but their rained out game against the Dragons will now be played on Saturday week.

The Raiders have a 1 and 4 record - plus the draw - to their name. They need to win both of their remaining games - against teams in the top six - if they're to have any hope of playing finals football. However, their slim chances are now dependent on other games falling their way. Their opponents this week, the Roosters, have a 3 and 3 record so far in 2021. The Roosters produced a big 50-0 victory over the Parramatta Eels on Saturday, scoring a total of 10 tries.

There have been two previous encounters between the Raiders and Roosters in this grade. The Roosters won 42-28 back in 2018, when the competition was played in a Nines format. In Round 4 last year, the Raiders won 18-10 at Henson Park.

14. Tyren Ryan 16. Hayden Barton 17. Nosa Obaseki 19. Ethan Halatokoua

18. Oscar Morgan 20. Baxter Senior 21. Henry Finau

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have lost all six matches of the season in Harold Matthews - and are now the only team yet to get a win. They are presently sitting in last place in the ladder, but they will will be aiming to avoid the wooden spoon in their final two games of the season. This Saturday they meet a Sydney Roosters team that is sitting in the top eight, with four wins and two losses to their name. They will finish the season on Saturday week, when they face the Dragons in the postponed Round 7 game. The Roosters suffered a 28-16 loss to the Eels at Cabramatta Stadium last Saturday - and have had back to back losses. The Raiders have won two of the past three matches between these two clubs - including the Round 4 clash in 2020, 24-18, at Henson Park.

Canberra Raiders

1. Jack Sandford 2. Deakin Bright 3. Xavier Savage 4. Josh Billing 5. Michael Asomua 6. Mitchell Spencer 7. Sione Moala 8. Caleb Esera 9. Toby Thorburn 10. Mitchell Prest 11. Noah Saddler 12. Clay Webb 13. Trey Mooney

14. Connor Williams 15. Loghan Lewis 17. Blake Martin 18. Jack McDougall

22. Joshua Pokoney

Sydney Roosters

1. Ethan King 2. Petelo Kepaoa 3. Vaiala Tamati 4. Jordan Swann 5. Kyron Fekitoa 6. Sandon Smith 7. Hugo Savala 8. Nicholas Fenton 9. Thomas Deakin 10. Jeff Tatupu 11. Corey Ross 12. Zac Montgomery 13. Joshua Wong

14. Tyler Moriarty 15. Sione Vaenuku 16. Kani Manu 17. Jerry Ratabua

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have lost their hold on first place on the SG Ball competition ladder, after suffering their first defeat of the season in Round 6 at the hands of the Eels. They've had the last two weeks off to reflect on that loss, after their Round 7 game against the Dragons was rained out, and last weekend's bye. They currently sit in fourth place on the ladder, one competition point behind the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs.

The Raiders now meet the third placed Sydney Roosters - a team with an identical 5 and 1 record this season. Only points differential splits the two teams, and there is not much difference there, either. With the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs still to face each other on Saturday week, this game be could be critical to a number of teams' hopes of a minor premiership. The Raiders will be boosted by the inclusion of Caleb Esera, Clay Webb, Trey Mooney and Xavier Savage. The Roosters produced a 36-22 win over the Parramatta Eels at Cabramatta in Round 8, building on a narrow two point half time lead. They ended up with seven tries, five in the second half.

The Roosters have won two of the past three games played against the Raiders in this grade - with the Sydney outfit winning in Round 4 last year, 20-26, at Henson Park.

This one should be a great clash!

As I understand it, the game against St George from Round 7 (which got washed out) is going to be played on Saturday week, so we have two games to go.

Ideally we want to finish top 2 as the finals system this year is 1 and 2 get the week off whilst 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5.

Junior Reps Round 9 preview

SG Ball Coach, Ash Barnes says having a young gun lock, Trey Mooney, back in the side will give the team a lift going into this weekend’s clash with the Roosters.

“Trey Mooney is making his first appearance of the year, he had an operation on his feet throughout the offseason and he’s going to make his first appearance for the team. That’s going to be a big inclusion for this game.”, Barnes said.

Lot's of work to do for the SG Ball side. Some real lazy defence in the ruck. Good to see "Terry" Mooney back. The side copped a battering today especially Clay Webb. Hopefully finish the regular season strongly against the Dragons.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale side suffered a 26-12 defeat at the hands of the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy in Round 9 at Mascot. The Roosters went to a 16-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes, scoring three tries, including a double to second rower Otesa Pule. A try to centre Makayla Morris, two minutes before the break, kept the Raiders in striking distance - trailing by 12 at half time. Morris produced another four pointer mid way through the second half, reducing the deficit to eight. But the Roosters struck back almost immediately with two tries in the space of five minutes, to take a 26-8 lead. Raiders prop Teliya Hetaraka scored what was essentially a consolation try, with around five minutes left.

The loss extinguished the Raiders' slim finals chances. They are three competition points away from the sixth placed Sharks, with only this week's match against the Dragons remaining. The Raiders have a 1 and 5 record - plus a draw - to their name in 2021. The Dragons will be playing finals football and won't be an easy assignment for the Green Machine. The Dragons are 4 and 3 so far this year, but have won three games in a row. In their last outing, they produced a 28-6 win against the Sharks at Mascot on Good Friday. The Raiders will no doubt be looking to finish the regular season on a good note.

The only previous encounter between the Raiders and Dragons in this competition saw the Sydney team run out winners, 56-14, in 2019.

14. Elijah Porter 15. Oliver Townsend 16. Hussein Anani 17. Matthew Alhazim

23. Flynn Gannon 24. Tyrell Fakaua

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders are the only team yet to record a win in Harold Matthews. In Round 9, they lost 36-10 to the Sydney Roosters - after trailing 16-4 at half time. Siamani Leuluai scored a double for the Raiders - one in each half, using effectively the same tractoring play. However, the Roosters were always well in control, scoring seven tries. The Raiders (0 and 7) meet the Dragons this week - and will be hoping to get a W in their column from their final game of the season. The Dragons have also had a difficult year, having posted just one win and six losses. However, even if the Raiders can get a win on Saturday, points differential seems likely to hand Canberra the wooden spoon. The Raiders have won three of the past four matches against the Dragons, including the last match-up, 20-8, in Round 2 of 2020 at Kippax.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders SG Ball team lost their second match of the season on Saturday, with the Sydney Roosters producing a 30-24 victory at Mascot. The Roosters led 24-0 after 25 minutes, scoring four straight tries to open the match. Forward Trey Mooney got the Raiders on the board in the 28th minute, spinning around in the tackle to get over the line. Winger Michael Asomua then crossed in the corner, with seconds left in the first half, keeping the Raiders in the game. They trailed 24-10 at the break.

The Raiders made a good comeback in the second half. in the 46th minute, Asomua put in a kick back inside, with Josh Billing brilliantly chasing to score. That reduced the Roosters' margin to 10 points. Josh Wong struck back for the Roosters in the 55th minute, stretching their lead to 30-14. Caleb Esera charged over in the 58th minute, following a penalty for a high shot. Then with just a few minutes remaining, Toby Thorburn darted out of dummy half - to get his team within six. Sadly, Mitchell Spencer missed a relatively easy kick - and the Raiders were unable to breach the gap in the final minute. The win put the Roosters in the box seat for the minor premiership.

The Raiders have lost back to back matches, after sitting on top of the competition ladder for much of the season. They now sit in fifth place on the ladder, with only a meeting with the 14th placed Dragons remaining in the regular season. The Dragons have a 1 and 6 record so far - having defeated only the Victoria Thunderbolts in Round 6. They suffered a 56-24 loss to the Manly Sea Eagles in their last outing. A win should still see them force their way into the top four, with the second placed Bulldogs to meet the fourth placed Rabbitohs on Saturday.

The Dragons have won two of the past three matches against the Raiders in this grade, including the the last encounter, 24-10, in 2019.

Looks like the Raiders have finished fourth in SG Ball. So, despite the NSWRL website draw suggesting there are quarter finals and a top eight... as per another of their announcements it seems it is a top six.

In Week 1 it is 3 V 6 and 4 V 5, so the Raiders meet the Bulldogs in the first week of finals. 1 and 2 have the week off. It is elimination from here for the Raiders.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders SG Ball team finished the regular season with a big 56-6 win over the St George Dragons on Saturday. The Dragons scored first, but the Raiders ensured that things went pear shaped for the home team from there. The Raiders led 22-6 at the break and then completely monopolised the score board in the second half. Canberra scored a total of 10 tries, with centre Josh Billing getting a hat trick, while prop Caleb Esera produced a double.

The Raiders qualified for the finals in fourth place - with six wins and two losses. That means they meet the fifth placed Bulldogs in Week 1 of the play offs. The Bulldogs have a 5 and 1 record for the season, along with two draws.

The Dogs are coming off a 28-18 loss to the Rabbitohs at Stadium Australia - with the result ensuring that South Sydney finished in third. The Rabbitohs started fast, scoring the opening three tries. Canterbury fought back with tries either side of the break - to half Joseph O’Neill and fullback Cameron Lawrence. But Rabbitohs centre Faresa Palu scored back to back tries in the space of six minutes to secure the match for his team. Bulldogs winger Brandon Tapuai scored a consolation try in the final few minutes. It was the Bulldogs first loss of the year.

The Raiders and Bulldogs have not yet met this year - and you have to go back to 2017 to find the last clash between the clubs in this grade. For what it is worth, Canterbury won that game, 38-10 at Belmore. The Raiders won the only other recent clash back in 2015, 42-22, again at Belmore.

The Raiders are on a WWLLW form line in their past five games, while the Bulldogs have a WWWDL recent record. Against top six teams this year, the Bulldogs have a 2 and 1 record this year - winning against the No. 1 team, the Roosters in Round 1 (24-16) and the Sea Eagles (26-24). The Raiders have a 1 and 1 record against top six teams - winning over the Steelers (36-10), but losing to the Roosters (30-24) in Round 9.

The Raiders opened the season with a five game winning streak, but suffered a late season dip - in part due to disruptions to the line up. They are now close to full strength. This should be a very good contest.

Should be a great contest. Hopefully it will be streamed live on the NSWRL Facebook page. They haven’t announced what games they are doing.

One can only describe it as a televisual feast if it eventuates.

Agree, players also in contention for both state U19 rep sides will want to put their best foot forward. Raiders by 14.

SG Ball Finals Week 1 Preview

The Canberra Raiders S.G. Ball Cup side will take the field this Saturday in a sudden-death elimination final against the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs at HE Laybutt Field.

“Our forwards did a fantastic job [on the weekend]. Caleb Esera and Trey Mooney really stood up for us through the middle third on the weekend,” coach Ash Barnes said. “For us this weekend, our forwards are going to have to do a really good job against a strong Dogs pack.”

Looks like an eight point try to the Raiders there... or the scores coming through have doubled up on a conversion... Raiders lead 34-10.

Full time 44-10. Great stuff boys.

I am not sure how the semis draw works. 6th placed Illawarra have beaten 3rd placed Souths so I am not sure if that makes us 3rd seeds and we play Roosters or whether the winner of our game was always going to play Manly.

To answer my own question, according to the PDF version of the draw the 2nd placed team plays the highest ranked winner from week one.

Therefore we play Roosters next week. Manly will play Illawarra in the other preliminary final.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have qualified for Week 2 of the SG Ball finals, defeating the Canterbury Bulldogs, 44-10. The dimensions of the victory - an eight tries to two win - was impressive, given that the Bulldogs finished the regular season level with the Raiders in terms of competition points. The Bulldogs had only tasted defeat once. The Bulldogs led 10-4 after 16 minutes - but the Raiders held them scoreless after that and piled on seven consecutive tries. Centre Josh Billing got a hat trick, while lock forward Trey Money scored a late double.

The Raiders now meet the Manly Sea Eagles in a Grand Final qualifier. The Sea Eagles finished second - and have had the week off, so they will be tough opponents for the Green Machine. Manly had a 6 and 1 record in the regular season - plus had one draw. The Raiders now have a 7 and 2 record, including last weekend's match.

The Raiders are on a WLLWW form line in their past five games, while the Sea Eagles are on a four game winning streak. Manly had a better defensive record than the Raiders in the regular season, conceding 16 points per game, compared with 21 conceded by Canberra. However, the Raiders just shaded the Sea Eagles in attack (37 points scored per game, compared with 36 for Manly).

The Sea Eagles have not won against a top six team this year, drawing with the Rabbitohs, 22 all, in Round 2 and suffering a narrow loss to the Bulldogs, 26-24, in Round 5.

This should again be a very good contest.

My apologies. I have had an absolute shocker here. I am sure I saw that Manly finished on top not the Roosters. In that last round, it seems results weren't going through the NSWRL system and updating the ladder (our game had 6 mins to go for 2 days) and perhaps that is where I saw Manly were on top.

So my understanding that we are to play the 2nd ranked team was correct, but I had the second ranked team wrong all along.
