AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale team was defeated by the Illawarra Steelers, 28-16, last Saturday at Kippax. It was a fairly close contest in the first half with both teams scoring two tries - and goal kicking proving the difference to the 12-8 half time lead for the Steelers. But the Raiders could not keep pace after the break. The Steelers' speedy fullback Teegan Berry scored an impressive hat trick - and the Raiders gave her too much room, too often. Madyson Tooth opened the scoring for the Raiders in the 13th minute, with a very good run on the last tackle. The best try for the Green Machine was scored 10 minutes later, with winger Chloe Muggleton making a great break down the scoreboard touchline. Captain Krystal Blackwell scored a cheeky consolation try in the final minute, taking off from the scrum base for an incisive run. But by then it was all too late.

The Raiders are yet to produce a win in this grade in 2021, and are placed seventh in a nine team competition. Canberra did not lose by much in the opening two rounds, but some crucial errors have proven costly. The Green Machine now meets the eighth placed Canterbury Bulldogs - another team yet to record a win. The Bulldogs suffered a 26-12 loss to the Wests Tigers last Saturday at Leichhardt Oval. The Raiders have won two of the three clashes played against the Bulldogs in this competition - but the Bulldogs won the last contest, 16-12, in Round 5 last year at Belmore.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have lost their three opening matches of the season in Harold Matthews - one of three teams yet to get a win. They suffered a big 38-6 loss at the hands of the Illawarra Steelers last Saturday on a very warm day at Kippax. It was pretty much all one way traffic, with the Raiders conceding seven tries. Canberra scored a consolation try inside the last 10 minutes, when half Leroy Murray kicked ahead for himself. He regathered to score after the ball took an awkward turn - and he converted his own try. Canberra sits in last place on the ladder and now travel to Sydney for a meeting with the 12th placed North Sydney Bears. The Bears have one win to their name this season - a 24-20 win over the Sharks at Cronulla last Saturday. The Raiders have won three of the past four matches against the Bears - but lost the last encounter, 26-12, in Round 3 of 2019 at Mascot.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders SG Ball team are on top of the SG Ball ladder, after opening the season with three wins in a row. The Raiders produced a big 36-10 victory over the Illawarra Steelers at a very hot Kippax last Saturday. It was a strong performance from the young Green Machine, considering the loss of prop Jayden Clarkson (ankle) and centre Xavier Savage (hamstring) during the match.
In his debut in green, Savage showed what all the excitement has been about, scoring the first try of the match, after just three minutes. He is elusive and speedy and both were clearly on display. Unfortunately he left the field shortly afterwards, with a hamstring problem. The Steelers quickly fought back, with tries to centre Brandon Morkos and winger Cooper Tunbridge - taking a 10-6 lead after 15 minutes. But the Raiders gradually re-asserted control, with tries to Mitchell Prest and Connor Williams, in the space of three minutes, delivering an 18-10 lead for the home team at the break. It was not all easy going for the Raiders in the second half, but they were able to keep the Steelers scoreless, while piling on four tries themselves. Half Sione Moala and hooker Toby Thorburn were busy, while Noah Saddler and Clay Webb impressed in the second row. Moala, Webb and Saddler all scored well deserved second half tries.

The Raiders are the only team with a perfect 3-0 record. In Round 4, they head to Macquarie University for a clash with the North Sydney Bears. The Bears are yet to post a win, and sit in 14th place on the ladder. The Bears suffered a huge 50-6 loss to the Sharks last weekend at Cronulla, conceding nine tries, six in the second half. However, they only lost by two points to the Eels in Round 2. The Raiders have a 3-0 recent record against the Bears. Canberra won the last clash between the clubs, 28-20, back in Round 9 of 2018 at North Sydney Oval.
