Queanbeyan Blues on Instagram and Facebook:

"Due to advice received from the NSWRL, clubs have been advised to cease training effective immediately.

Further information is due to be released tomorrow and we will update as we are notified."

Goulburn Bulldogs on Facebook:

"The inevitable has happned and the Goulburn Bulldogs are in lock down from training and playing as a group/club.

NSWRL and the Canberra Region Rugby League has requested that all training is to be cancelled for two weeks at this stage. So no training this week or next. This could be extended depending on the outbreak of this virus or from from further advice from the powers that be.

The club trial this weekend against Mittagong has also been cancelled.

At this stage, the competition is looking at starting two weeks later now, also dependant on advice from the CRRL. This is a rough plan but will most likely change as well..."

Woden Valley Rams, Tuggeranong Bushrangers, West Belconnen Warriors have also issued similar statements.

NSWRL suspends all competitions over COVID-19

A special meeting of the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) Board has agreed to postpone all Community Rugby League until at least 1 May 2020, effective immediately, while all major NSWRL competitions have been suspended until 31 May in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Community Rugby League, which involves more than 100,000 grassroots players across NSW, from Under 6s to open age, was due to kick-off on 4 April, but will now be delayed until at least 1 May.

NSWRL’s 13 major competitions, most of which started last weekend, with the exception of junior representative competitions which kicked off in February, have been suspended until 31 May. The later date will allow teams to train and prepare earlier in May if Community Rugby League is cleared to resume.

Community rugby league postponed

The National Rugby League (NRL), in partnership with State governing bodies, has postponed community rugby league in Australia until at least the first weekend of May.

The postponement includes all junior and senior community club rugby league competitions, training, gala days and future League Stars programs.

NRL Head of Football – Participation, Pathways and Game Development, Luke Ellis said the decision to suspend community club rugby league immediately was made after consultation with the State governing bodies to assist in slowing the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

“Community rugby league will be postponed until at least the first weekend of May, that includes playing games and training,’’ he said.

“The decision to pause community rugby League in Australia was not taken lightly and is simply about the NRL and State governing bodies, as custodians of rugby league, putting extra-conservative measures in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health and wellbeing of our participants,” Ellis said.

“Community rugby league doesn’t have the ability to enforce the same social distancing procedures as the elite game. That’s why, in partnership with our state bodies, we have chosen to err on the side of caution.”

The NRL will continue to meet with state governing bodies in relation to community rugby league and will review today’s announcement based on government health departments and experts.

Mr Ellis added the NRL and state leagues remained committed to growing community rugby league participation and would keep all participants informed of future developments.

“Community rugby league is the foundation of our game. We are committed to seeing it flourish. I understand some participants will be disappointed with the decision, but community health must come first.”

“We look forward to our community rugby league participants returning to the game as soon as expert advice deems it appropriate.”

Canberra Raiders Cup start delayed

The Canberra Raiders Cup will work on a range of contingency plans to try to get in a full season, including speaking to the ACT government about using the buffer zone between winter and summer sports. Both junior and senior rugby league in Canberra has been pushed back until early May at the earliest due to the coronavirus.

The Canberra Raiders Cup was due to start on April 18, which means at least the opening two rounds will need to be either cancelled or rescheduled.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Canberra Region Rugby League still looking at options to get on field in 2020

The Canberra Raiders Cup might be reduced to carnivals and gala days as late as November if their best-case scenario of an abbreviated season falls through.

"Our scenario planning starts with some sort of competition, that's your August-September, if we're starting to get into October-November it starts to take on your carnival and gala days to get something up and happening. It might be four or five carnival days at different locations depending on what resources are available.

ACT government announces $3.3 million cash injection for Canberra sport

The ACT government will inject $3.3 million into Canberra's sports sector in a bid to keep leagues above water as their clubs stare down the barrel of major financial hits.

"The waiving of ground hire fees is very much appreciated, and it's something the whole sector has spoken to the government about and the government has listened," Canberra Region Rugby League boss Mark Vergano said.

NSWRL aims to re-start grassroots rugby league in July

The New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) Board today established a plan to work towards a re-start of Rugby League activities from July 2020 to coincide with a common return date for some other winter sports across the state and the commencement of term 3 in the school year.

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said the decision to work towards a shortened Community Rugby League season and a re-start of other abbreviated senior competitions from 18 July 2020 will be further reviewed and confirmed on 1 June 2020 subject to the existing Government advice available at the time.

The decision to work towards starting Rugby League competitions from 18 July 2020, and to resume training from 1 July 2020, applies to the following:

Community Football, involving more than 100,000 boys, girls, men and women across the state to commence. The 2020 season was originally due to commence 4 April when it was postponed in March. All Clubs and Leagues are encouraged to continue to take registrations beyond the traditional 30 June registration cut-off date.

Ron Massey Cup, Sydney Shield and Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership to resume.

Canberra Raiders Cup aiming for July re-start

The Canberra Raiders Cup could receive the green light to start on July 18, in line with NSW Rugby League's plans to resume community competitions. Canberra Region Rugby League general manager Mark Vergano said they would start consulting with clubs and sharing competition models for a potential July start.

"It's good for us and our clubs, it gives everyone a focus to work towards now," Vergano said.

It will be interesting to see how this will work. One would expect these games, not only in the ACT but around NSW / Qld will generate some big crowds if you can’t attend NRL.

Not only from general RL fans but these games get crowds of families and in the case of kids games, pretty impossible not to play them without the parents there.

What’s more many of the grounds are open parks or if they have a fence, it is very easy to watch from the other side of the fence.

One would have to ask if these games can happen why can’t we have crowds at NRL games by then. If you are going to be infected it is going to be from someone nearby, not on the other side of the ground. You have as much chance of being infected in the grandstand at Phillip if it is more than 1/2 full as at Canberra stadium.

I doubt there’ll be crowds. The 500 people limit is going to be one of the last things to be removed.

Pretty hard to stop crowds at the grounds where there is no fence, which is the case for many junior games. Most Canberra Raiders Cup grounds you could watch from outside the fence anyway.

I can't think of any Canberra Raiders Cup grounds which aren't enclosed, and I am struggling to think of any ground which is easy to watch from outside the fence... and leagues clubs will likely still be closed at those grounds where the club is along the sideline.

If junior footy takes place while there is a 500 crowd limit... they'll need to control it somehow, otherwise the games can't happen.

What stops them from doing what they did when they closed beaches? You issue a fine or 2 and people will be straight out of there.

Queanbeyan teams face different rules to Canberra rivals

Queanbeyan teams could be left behind if the ACT government gives the all clear for sports to resume training in Canberra as early as this week. The government has eased coronavirus restrictions, Chief Minister Andrew Barr giving the go ahead for groups of 10 people to kick the footy at the park.

"Everything is heading in the right direction with the work on those return to play protocols, but we have to keep complying because that will allow us to get back on the field," CRRL boss Mark Vergano said.

Statement from the Canberra Region Rugby League

The CRRL understands that there has been interest in the rugby league community surrounding some Canberra Raiders players questioning the NRL No Jab No Play protocols.

The protocols at this stage are solely for the NRL as a professional sport.

There have been no decisions taken in this area for community sport.

The CRRL continues to work closely with Governments and take appropriate medical advice as well as working with its head affiliated body, the NSW Rugby League, on all aspects of the potential Return to Play protocols.

As these protocols are developed and decided upon, the local rugby league community will be advised accordingly.

Canberra community sport plan set to be unveiled after 'confusing' messages

The ACT government is poised to unveil its plan for restarting community sport on Wednesday. Chief Minister Andrew Barr cleared the way for 10 friends to kick a football at a field or attend boot camps, but Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said Canberra sporting teams would be limited to two people at a time. ACT sporting grounds are yet to be officially opened.

Free to train: Canberra Raiders Cup teams get a boost with easing of restrictions

Senior and junior Canberra sporting teams will be allowed to train in groups of 10 or less from Saturday.

"Informal, outdoor, non-contact sport [can] restart for small groups of up to 10 people," Chief Minister Andrew Barr said. "We will not see a return to community football competitions just yet. This is to allow for training, whether that is through community clubs... or individual activities.

Read more: https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/ ... /?cs=14280

https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/ ... /?cs=14237

Restrictions on informal sport carefully eased

The ACT Government has announced the first phase of gradual easing of restrictions on sport and recreation with informal outdoor, non-contact sport to restart and commercial pools allowed to reopen from midnight Friday 15 May.

From midnight Friday 15 May 2020, non-contact social sporting activity can recommence in outdoor spaces with a maximum of 10 people.

The ACT Government is working with sporting organisations on how this can be properly managed to continue to observe physical distancing measures, personal hygiene, and effective cleaning of any touch points.

Sports that can deliver outdoor activities, or are able to modify their activities, to comply with the rules for this first phase are able to recommence training. These rules require that small groups are always maintained, with physical contact to be avoided. Sports must also promote general hygiene and physical distancing as an integral part of their activity.

The general principles that will apply are:

Outdoor sports only
Groups of a maximum of 10 people
Get in, train and get out
Practice good hand hygiene before and after training
Changerooms, canteens and kitchens remain closed – arrive dressed and ready to train
Stay home if you are unwell
Don’t share drinks or towels
Sharing of equipment such as balls and weights is allowed however should be kept to a minimum
Sportsgrounds must be booked prior to use
Follow the one person per 4 square metres rule to ensure sufficient physical distancing between participants
Additionally, sporting organisations will be asked to prepare a ‘Return to Play in a COVID safe environment’ plan to support the resumption of sporting activity in their specific context.

A number of small groups will be able to train within an area, such as a football field or court, as long as they are clearly separated at all times and following the one person per 4 square metres rule.

ACT Government sportsgrounds will be available for bookings from 18 May 2020, with existing suspended booking reinstated and new bookings available in line with the ordinary arrangements during the current playing season. However, communal facilities such as changerooms, clubhouses and kitchen facilities will remain closed for the time being.

While the phased re-start of organised sport limits competition play, ACT Government sportsgrounds will be available for weekend training.

Bookings are required to make formal use of sportsgrounds for training and take precedence of informal community use. Changes to existing bookings or new bookings will be taken from Thursday 14 May.

Restrictions on pools will also be eased from midnight Friday 15 May, with pools allowed to reopen for small groups of up to 10 people per pool and one swimmer per lane.

While the option for pools to open will become available, reopening for restricted pool access remains a commercial decision for individual pool operators. Government owned pools, including Gungahlin Pool, Canberra Olympic Pool, Tuggeranong Pool, and Erindale Active Leisure Centre, will not reopen at this time while maintenance and upgrade works are completed. Government owned outdoor pools, being Dickson Pool and Manuka Pool, remain closed for winter as is usually the case.

Indoor sporting venues and fitness gyms will remain closed at this stage. The ACT Government will work with businesses and the community about when it is possible for indoor fitness gyms to reopen, in line with health advice.

It is great to see further easing of restriction and what that can mean for community sport in the ACT. The relaxed restrictions announced today recognise how hard our community has worked to stop the spread of COVID-19.

This news will be a welcome relief for sporting organisations and for members of the community keen to get active and back into the social sport that they love.

The pandemic is ongoing and the ACT Government will remain vigilant. If this situation changes again and an increase of new cases of the virus arises, the government remains ready to respond sensibly.

Remember that in any activity you do, you must maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres apart or 4 square metres per person and continue to practice personal hygiene. These measures continue to be most effective to stop the spread of COVID-19.

More information will be available on the ACT Government COVID-19 response website at www.covid19.act.gov.au

ACT government media release

Training can resume. As I read the article it must be in groups of 10 but you can have multiple groups. Body contact not allowed but the use of footballs is OK.

No training yet for Canberra Raiders Cup teams

The NSWRL Rugby League has yet to sanction a return to training for all clubs in both the ACT and NSW. Therefore, at this time, no teams can train as they will be uninsured. NSW Rugby Leagues Associations Chairman, Matt Brady stated the following:

“At this stage no training session whether in small groups or not has been sanctioned. This means there is no cover for anyone to participate in any organised training sessions at this stage. As previously stated, our proposed timeline is for training to return at the beginning July with games to resume mid-July. This will all be confirmed in the first week of June by the NSWRL.

'It's a beast': The grim financial reality facing Canberra Raiders Cup clubs hit by the coronavirus

Canberra's rugby league teams are facing the grim financial reality of a loss of funding from licensed clubs and sponsor revenue as a result of the coronavirus - and some may not be able to afford to play in 2020.

West Belconnen Warriors president Steve Kirby said: "You want sports to be back playing and I understand that. But if it's at the detriment of the club surviving, it's an easy decision for all sports to make. It's not just playing. It's the health and safety of volunteers ... and there's no money coming through the door. It's a massive beast."

This is a great interview. Really insightful in all the thinking about the return to play. Also think Vergano was absolutely spot on in his views on Peter V’Landys.

NSWRL community football to resume in July

The NSWRL is pleased to confirm that community football for children in competitions up to and including under 18 comps will resume in July. The NSWRL has been working towards a re-start of modified and select competitions from 18 July and a return to full contact training from 1 July.

There has been no decision on adults returning to play, which means the senior NSWRL competitions – Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership and Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield – along with senior community football competitions, scheduled to re-start 18 July 2020, are still on hold, pending further advice.

Uncertainty around Canberra Raiders Cup teams following coronavirus pandemic

CRRL boss Mark Vergano is looking at a 13-14-week Canberra Raiders Cup season starting on July 18, but a draw can’t be done until the teams participating are finalised.

Canberra Raiders Cup in doubt as teams pull out

The 2020 Canberra Raiders Cup season is in doubt, with two teams pulling the pin, another one unlikely and three clubs unsure. It means the Canberra Raiders Cup could follow the lead of the group 10 and 11 competitions, opting to write off 2020 and resume next year.
