33rd min TRY RABBITOHS to Mawene Hiroti, it is off the back of a dropped ball, Sam Williams pass not taken. Too many errors from Mounties. Hiroti converts his own try.

HALF TIME

South Sydney Rabbitohs 18
Mounties 4

Lots of errors from Mounties, gifting the Rabbitohs too many opportunities. Mounties continue their slump.

It sounds like the Mounties are cooked but Souths are a good team I think they will go close to winning of this year

TRY MOUNTIES to Sam Williams, consolation try taking on the line himself. Went down the left side.

MATCH REPORT: South Sydney Rabbitohs record comfortable win over Mounties

A powerful first-half from the South Sydney Rabbitohs has helped record a 30-18 victory over the Mounties at Metricon High Performance Centre on Saturday.

Jaydn Su'A made a strong first impression in the cardinal and myrtle with a try in the opening half while Mirene Hiroti crossed for two tries of his own – one on either side of half-time.

Preview

Last match: The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties crashed to their fifth loss in their past six matches in Round 16 - when they were defeated by the South Sydney Rabbitohs, 30-18, at Redfern Oval.

Mounties were boosted by the late inclusion of Sam Williams, Sebastian Kris, Corey Horsburgh and Royce Hunt - while hooker Billy Brittain and fullback Corey Allan were late withdrawals for the Rabbitohs. But ultimately, that wasn't reflected in the performance of the two teams.

The Rabbitohs were well in control through the contest, with Mounties scoring two consolation tries in the final 10 minutes to Andre Niko and Sam Williams. South Sydney led 18-4 at half time - and went to a 20 point lead early in second half, when they were first to score through lock Bayley Sirononen. Royce Hunt gave the visitors some hope when he crossed in the 48th minute, reducing Mounties' deficit to 14 points. But when Rabbitohs winger Mawene Hiroti scored his second try of the afternoon in the 67th minute - giving South Sydney a 30-10 lead - it was pretty much game over.

There was little doubt who was man of the match - Rabbitohs half Adam Doueihi, who set up three tries, made five tackle breaks, a line break, and ran for 130 metres. Tom Starling (15 runs for 121 metres, three tackle breaks, nine dummies and 44 tackles), Emre Guler (17 runs for 167 metres, 52 post contact metres, three tackle breaks, one off load and 26 tackles) and Royce Hunt (one try, 11 runs for 93 metres, one line break, five tackle breaks, four off loads, 27 tackles) were amongst the strongest for Mounties.

Corey Horsburgh broke the 100m gained mark, and was busy in defence - but missed three tackles, made one error, conceded two penalties and was sin binned for striking towards the end of the match. Jack Murchie missed five tackles and made two errors. They're not the sort of figures Ricky Stuart would have been hoping to see from his potential bench forwards.

Emre Guler (167), Matt Timoko (154) and Tony Satini (146) topped the metres gained for Mounties, while Tom Starling (44), Corey Horsburgh (29) and Royce Hunt (27) topped the tackle count.

This week: Mounties are still placed fifth on the competition ladder, but the break they had on the teams below them has closed. The sixth placed North Sydney Bears are now just one competition point adrift, while the Newtown Jets are two competition points behind. Mounties are also now three competition points behind the ladder leaders, the Rabbitohs and Panthers.

This week they face the fourth placed St George Illawarra Dragons at Wollongong - in a warm up match for the NRL clash between the Raiders and Dragons. Up until last weekend, the Dragons were on a three game winning streak, with victories over the Panthers (24-22), Sea Eagles (20-14) and Warriors (28-6). However, they lost in their last outing, to the Newtown Jets, 24-18, at Henson Park. The Jets led 24-4 at half time - but the Dragons came back scoring three tries in the second half. However, Newtown was able to hold the Dragons at bay in the final eight minutes and secure a six point victory.

This match is a battle between the top two attacking teams (Mounties ranked first, Dragons second). Mounties keep piling on points, despite their five recent losses. In those defeats Mounties have still scored an average of 22 points - certainly enough points to win. The defence has been the problem and that is where the Dragons will have the advantage in this contest.

Season record: Mounties 8 and 6, 1 draw (5th, +72)
Dragons 8 and 5, 2 draws (4th, +110)

Attack: Mounties 29 points, Dragons 27 points scored per match
Mounties rank 1st, Dragons 2nd

Defence: Mounties 24 points, Dragons 20 points conceded per match
Mounties rank 10th, Dragons 4th

Form: Mounties: LWLLL
Dragons: DWWWL

Recent meetings:
2019 Round 1 - Mounties 28 drew St George Illawarra Dragons 28 at Aubrey Keech Reserve
2018 Round 24 - St George Illawarra Dragons 26 defeated Mounties 12 at Canberra Stadium
2018 Round 1 - Mounties 22 defeated St George Illawarra Dragons 20 at Wollongong Stadium

Head to head: Mounties 5, St George Illawarra Dragons 7, 1 draw

Mounties team changes: Halves Sam Williams and Brendan O'Hagan have swapped jerseys, but that probably doesn't mean too much! Corey Horsburgh moves back up to the Raiders NRL squad, with Royce Hunt shifting to second row to replace him. Steve Tavita comes into the starting team at lock. Jarrett Boland comes into the top 17 on the bench.

Our tip: Mounties have been significantly disrupted in the past six weeks, as injury and suspension for the Raiders have flowed on to the Mt Pritchard outfit - and they've struggled as a result. They led the competition for a good part of the season, but the past six weeks have seen them dropping down the ladder like a stone. They will be desperate to turn things around against the Dragons - but given the recent form lines, St George Illawarra will be clear favourites at home. The head says Dragons by at least four. Hopefully, Mounties can build come cohesion and lift the defensive intensity - and get the two points.

Hmmm- meanwhile Guler racked up some big numbers and Hunt also had a lot of impact (judging by( tackle breaks and offloads.

I would have thought he was a certainty to play given his lack of minutes in recent weeks. He needed game time. You don't think his replacement is also going to come from this game?

I'm not really sure how Guler dropped down the pecking order so quick this year.
