MATCH REPORT: North Sydney Bears overcome Mounties in final 10 minutes

Two converted tries in the final 10 minutes helped the Bears to a win in a close encounter with the Mounties at North Sydney Oval on Sunday afternoon. In a tense, hard-hitting final five minutes of play, the Mounties came close on a few occasions but it was the Bears who sealed the win after Tom Freebairn strode over next to the posts in the dying minutes to make it 24-14.

Last week: The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties suffered their second defeat in a row, losing to the North Sydney Bears, 24-14, at North Sydney Oval. Mounties led by two with 10 minutes remaining, but two tries to the Bears in the final stages saw them overpower the Mt Pritchard outfit.

The Bears were the first to score through hooker Sam Verrills, who stepped his way to the line in the 25th minute. However, Mounties hit back eight minutes later, with Ata Hingano intercepting and making a 90 metre run to set up centre Reubenn Rennie for a four pointer.

The teams were level, 6-6, at the break, but Mounties started strongly when the match resumed - with half Dean Matterson setting up prop Royce Hunt scoring a try three minutes into the second half. Their 12-6 lead did not last long, with Bears winger Bernard Lewis making a run down the sideline - the defence falling for his dummy pass, on his way to the try line. His try saw the match all tied up, 12-12, at the 50th minute.

Mounties took the lead back with 15 minutes left on the clock, courtesy of an Andre Niko penalty goal from in front. But it was the Bears that finished the stronger. In the 70th minute, lock Max Bailey followed a Brock Lamb kick, snatching the ball out of the hands of Andre Niko to score. The Bears had an 18-14 lead, and then iced the game with a Tom Freebairn try in the final minutes.

The Bears dominated possession, with a 56 per cent share of the ball, with Mounties completing at just 71 per cent (Bears 76 per cent). Emre Guler (50), Kyle Paterson (40) and Jarrett Boland topped the tackle count for Mounties. Guler (155), Reubenn Rennie (147) and Eddie Aiono (136) topped the metres gained. Guler and Royce Hunt were strongest for Mounties in the forwards, while Rennie and Andre Niko stood out in the back line.

This week: Mounties have fallen to second place on the competition ladder, with the Panthers moving into first place. Mounties now face the sixth placed Western Suburbs Magpies - the feeder club for the Wests Tigers - on Saturday at Campbelltown Stadium. It is part of a double header, with the Canberra Raiders meeting the Wests Tigers in Jersey Flegg in the warm up game. The Magpies drew, 22 all, with the St George Illawarra Dragons at Kogarah Jubillee Oval last Sunday. The Dragons were in control for much of the game, and led 22-4 early in the second half. But the Magpies scored the final three tries of the match, two in the final 12 minutes, to snatch a last gasp draw.

It was the Magpies' second draw of the season, after finishing level with the Bulldogs, 10-10, three weeks ago. They have also recorded five wins and two losses so far this season - and won twice in their past five games, against the Newtown Jets (32-22) and South Sydney Rabbitohs (30-18). Mounties have won seven, drawn one, and lost three. Mounties are still the top attacking team, but after conceding 76 points in the past two weeks, they now rank 10th in defence. They have averaged 31 points per match (Magpies 22) and conceded an average 22 points per match (Magpies 19).

Mounties team changes: Andre Niko moves to fullback, with Eddie Aiono shifting to Niko's regular wing position. Ata Hingano is out, with Dean Matterson moving to five eighth and Brendan O'Hagan coming into the team at halfback. Sam Duggan has been named at starting hooker, with Kyle Paterson dropping to the interchange bench. Royce Hunt has been named in the extended Raiders squad and Vincent Rennie is named in his place at starting prop. Emre Guler has been promoted to the Raiders top 17, with Jack Murchie returning in his place in the second row. Raiders Jersey Flegg forward, Darby Medlyn comes in on the bench.

Our tip: Mounties have a very good record against the Magpies, and have won two of the three matches they've played at Campbelltown - a venue right in their own backyard. Mounties have named a fairly strong side, but they are again disrupted due to the large number of Raiders players who are injured or suspended. It might be difficult for them to avoid a third straight loss in this one. Hopefully, they can overcome the odds and take the win "on the road".

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders affiliate Mounties prevail at Campbelltown Stadium

The weather was dull and the floodlights failed to light up the football at times, but Mounties have momentarily retaken the competition lead in the Canterbury Cup from Penrith for at least the next 24 hours, following their 18-12 win over Western Suburbs at Campbelltown Stadium this afternoon.

Mounties may have been without their classy spine of Aiden Sezer, Ata Hingano and Tom Starling for their clash with the Magpies, but the visitors were still too classy when it mattered, despite the home side being strengthened by late inclusions, Elijah Taylor, Chris McQueen and Paul Momirovski.

It felt damp, cold and I was chilled to the bones by the end of the day. It was dark by about 3:30pm. I've driven home to Canberra and I still haven't fully warmed up. Neither game will challenge for the most entertaining of the year, to be polite. I found the whole place bleak, uninviting, desolate and lacking any atmosphere whatsoever.

100%!! Like a jail yard! Bit like walking up Northbourne at 3am! Haha. The 20’s just got penalised out of the game and everything that could have went wrong did! I dont think the tigers could have played any better and the raiders any worse! One of those days.... im sure they will bounce back. I thought Mounties where good in cup.The left centre played well. Who where your standouts in both games?

Last week: The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties got back on the winners list on Saturday at a cold, damp an dark Campbelltown Stadium, running out 18-12 victors. Both teams scored three tries in a stolid, grinding affair, with only the goal kicking proving the difference. Mounties were disrupted and without spine players of the likes of Ata Hingano and Tom Starling - while the Magpies benefitted from the late inclusion of Elijah Taylor, Chris McQueen and Paul Momirovski. However, Mounties did just enough to take home the competition points.

The Magpies were the first to score in the 16th minute, when Andre Niko was unable to handle a high kick, and Chris McQueen raced through to ground the ball in the corner. The visitors hit back in the 27th minute, with halfback Brendan O'Hagan throwing a huge dummy, and stepping back inside for what seemed an easy try. Niko's conversion gave Mounties a 6-4 lead, which they took to the break.

Five minutes into the second half, the Magpies grabbed back the lead, with a Tyson Gamble kick perfectly placed for winger Billie Maarbani - who plucked the ball out of the air and scored, without a challenge from any Mounties player. Mt Pritchard reasserted control in the 57th minute, with centre Reubenn Rennie producing a great pass to his winger, Niko, who scored in the corner. They followed up in the 68th minute, when Dean Matterson grubbered for Rennie. Just about everyone but Rennie thought the kick was too long, but he raced through and grounded the ball just inside the dead ball line.

That gave Mounties an 18-8 lead and the game looked to be in their keeping. But after a short kick off, the Magpies regathered the ball - and winger Kane Bradley crossed the line shortly after. Wests threw everything they had at Mounties inside the final 10 minutes, but it wasn't quite enough, with Mounties holding on for a six point victory.

Mounties dominated possession (54 per cent possession share) off the back of an 89 per cent completion rate (66 per cent for the Magpies). The Magpies made 13 errors (Mounties five) and conceded eight penalties (Mounties seven). Mounties made more runs (196-164), running metres (1655-1471), post contact metres (572-449), line breaks (3-2) and tackle breaks (32-26). They probably should have put on more points, but the attack was understandably disjointed. The Magpies had to make more than 100 more tackles than Mounties, and while they missed more tackles (32-26), Mounties produced more ineffective tackles (19-12) - and the Magpies had the better effective tackle rate.

Mounties included Duwanye Mariner on the bench, late, after he played Jersey Flegg - but was not credited with any minutes. So from that perspective, Mounties did well to win with just 16 players.

Royce Hunt (19 runs for 209 metres, 77 post contact metres, one line break, nine tackle breaks, three offloads, 22 tackles), JJ Collins (18 runs for 182 metres, 71 post contact metres, three tackle breaks, 29 tackles) and Reuben Porter (12 runs for 101 metres, 39 post contact metres, 43 tackles) were the strongest in the forwards. Reubenn Rennie (19 runs for 159 metres, 63 post contact metres, one line break assist, one try assist, four tackle breaks, two offloads) stood out in the backs, while Brendan O'Hagan, Dean Matterson and Sam Duggan were all solid amongst the play makers.

Royce Hunt (209), JJ Collins (182) and Reubenn Rennie (159) topped the metres gained for Mounties, while Sam Duggan (46), Reuben Porter (33) and Jack Murchie (31) topped the tackle count.

This week: Mounties maintained second place on the competition ladder and now face the eighth placed Newtown Jets - the feeder team for the Cronulla Sharks - at Aubrey Keech. The Jets won 22-10 over the Wentworthville Magpies at Henson Park last Saturday - jumping over their opponents into the top eight in the process. While the Magpies scored first, through second rower Salesi Fainga'a in the 10th minute, the Jets were in control for the majority of the contest.

The Jets have recorded five wins, a draw and six losses this season - but are undefeated in their past five matches. The closest they have come to a loss was a 20-20 draw against the Warriors in Round 12. They lost earlier this year to the Mounties 32-16 at Shark Park. Mounties have won eight, drawn one, and lost three this season. Mounties are top attacking team in the competition, but rank seventh in defence. They have averaged 30 points per match (Jets 23) and conceded an average 22 points per match (Jets 26).

Mounties team changes: Mounties have retained their starting 13 from the win over the Magpies. Michael Oldfield has been given the No. 1 jersey, after he was a late inclusion at centres, but actually played at fullback instead of Andre Niko, last week. Niko takes his regular wing spot. In the only change to the top 17, Dan Kier comes in on the bench for Duwanye Mariner.

Our tip: Mounties have a very good record against the Jets, and the Jets have only won once in four matches played at Aubrey Keech. However, Mounties will no doubt again be disrupted by the injury and suspension in the Canberra Raiders' ranks. In addition, the Jets have some strong recent form - after opening the season with four straight losses. This will be a tough assignment for the men in black and yellow - and sadly we won't be surprised if the Jets can get the "upset".
