Re: 2019 Mounties
The Mounties team announcement on Tuesday included Bateman. Concurrently, the Raiders announced Bateman was out... which is why our preview above on Tuesday noted there'd be further changes.
Re: 2019 Mounties
Fair enough. I have been a bit busy to trawl this site regularly. When I saw he was picked I assumed he was playing, not out for 6 weeks.greeneyed wrote: ↑April 27, 2019, 8:38 pmThe Mounties team announcement on Tuesday included Bateman. 44th min TRY MOUNTIES to Hudson Young. He gets a double... reward for being on the spot. Sea Eagles couldn’t handle the kick to the corner. Good defence saw Mounties force a line drop out in the lead up. Niko can’t convert from out wide.

49th min TRY SEA EAGLES to Taniela Paseka, it’s his second. It’s the result of Mounties being forced to take the ball in an offside position on their own goal line... and conceding the penalty. Miski converts.

Mounties are just not switched on. They should easily be accounting for this Sea Eagles team.

Last week: The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties continue their reign at the top of the competition ladder, after a 44-22 victory over the Blacktown Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval in Round 7. Mounties kept allowing the 11th placed Sea Eagles - a team that has won just one game so far this season - back into the match, but ultimately they proved to be too strong.
Mounties started the match brightly, with Corey Horsburgh picking up a difficult loose ball to send Bailey Simonsson on an 80 metre uncontested run to the try line line, to score under the posts. A further try to winger Andre Niko in the corner just a few minutes later, saw the visitors go out to an early 10-0 lead.
However, Mounties seemed to then clock off, with the Sea Eagles scoring three tries in the space of less than 10 minutes. Prop Taniela Pasaka started the scoring for the Sea Eagles in the 14th minute, before centre Sam Smith took advantage of a loose ball five minutes later, running 95 metres to score. And when second rower Haumole Olakau’tau crossed out wide in the 22nd minute, the Sea Eagles were suddenly ahead 16-10.
Mounties struck back in the 30th minute, after Aidan Sezer took an intercept, making a 70 metre run down field. He didn't have the pace to evade the chasing defenders, but his efforts laid the platform for a Hudson Young try on the ensuing play. The conversion from Andre Niko leveled the scores, with the teams heading to half time with a 16-16 scoreline.
Four minutes into the second half, Hudson Young was on the spot for a four pointer, when the Sea Eagles were unable to handle a Sezer kick to the the corner. But the match tilted back to the Sea Eagles in the 49th minute, when Taniela Paseka grabbed his second try of the afternoon. Blacktown had secured a 22-20 lead, but that would prove to be the end of the scoring for the "home" team.
In the 59th minute, an Ata Hingano kick and chase saw the Mounties half take back the lead for the men in black and yellow - before Tony Satini miraculously stayed in the field of play, planting the ball in the corner for his own try three minutes later. With eight minutes left on the clock, hooker Tom Starling made a brilliant break and put in a perfectly weighted kick for Hudson Young to get a hat trick. The try gave Mounties a comfortable 38-22 lead. They iced the cake with a stunning converted try right on full time, with winger Satini kicking back inside for centre Reubenn Rennie to score.
Mounties ended the game with almost a 60 per cent share of possession, though both teams were guilty of too many errors (10 apiece). Mounties dominated the running metres (a margin of 400 metres) and offloads (17-9) and forced three line drop outs. The Mounties made more line breaks (5-4), but the Sea Eagles produced a ton of tackle breaks (29-18). Both teams had a similar effective tackle rate, with Mounties producing more missed tackles (29-18) while Blacktown made more ineffective tackles (27-13).
Hudson Young was man of the match (three tries, 15 runs for 137 metres, 42 post contact metres, one line break, five tackle breaks, three offloads and 22 tackles). Bailey Simonsson, Tony Satini and Reubenn Rennie were the strongest performers in the backs - all scoring tries - while Corey Horsburgh was also strong in the forwards. Aidan Sezer did some good things, but is still not dominating at this level - which suggests he might still be getting back to full fitness (oblique).
Horsburgh (34), Reuben Porter (31) and Tom Starling (26) topped the tackle count for Mounties. Simonsson (206), Horsburgh (172) and Rennie (171) topped the metres gained.
This week: Mounties now face the third placed Penrith Panthers at Aubrey Keech Reserve this Sunday. The Panthers have posted narrow two point wins in their past two outings - first, over the Jets (18-16) and then over the Rabbitohs (20-18). The Panthers survived a late challenge from the Rabbitohs in the last round, with second rower Billy Burns' hat trick of tries securing the win for Penrith. The Panthers have won five and lost two matches this season. So far, they have only been beaten by the Western Suburbs Magpies and the New Zealand Warriors. Mounties have yet to taste defeat, posting six good wins - and drawing 28-28 with the Dragons in Round 1.
Mounties are the top attacking and defensive team in the competition. They have averaged 36 points per match (Panthers 19) and conceded an average 17 points per match (Panthers 18, ranked second in defence in the league).
Form: Mounties: WWWWW
Penrith Panthers: WLLWW
Head to head: The Mounties lost to the Panthers in Round 5 of 2018, 36-22, at Aubrey Keech Reserve - and were then even more decisively beaten by the Panthers, 34-14 in Round 12 at Panthers Stadium.
Mounties team changes: Michael Oldfield shifts from centre to take over the No. 1 jersey, with Bailey Simonsson promoted to the Raiders top 17, covering for an injured Jordan Rapana. Sebastian Kris comes back into the side at centre. Aidan Sezer has again been named as Mounties' halfback. With Corey Horsburgh and Hudgson Young promoted to the Raiders' bench, JJ Collins comes in at starting prop, while Jack Murchie will start in the second row. Dean Matterson and Vincent Rennie have been included on the bench.
Our tip: The Panthers are a club with enormous depth - with the likes of Jarome Luai, Daine Laurie and Dylan Edwards directing their "reggies" team. Even though they might not score a lot of points, they can clearly manufacture a close win on the back of their defensive efforts. It is concerning how Mounties tend to "switch off" during games. They won't be able to that in this contest. But if they're focused, their attack should prove to be the difference. We'll tip Mounties at home.

I thought Naden went to newcastle. Didn't think he'd be on the wing. Seemed like a career centre.
