Penrith take a 24-22 lead. They’ve had a man in the bin for 10 minutes but they’ve come from behind.

I was only listening on the radio. I don't know what it is, but the Panthers seem like Mounties bogey team. They really should have beaten that Panthers team, with lots of players "saved" for next week by the Panthers' NRL team. And the were playing 12 men in the second half for 10 minutes, after a binning. Mounties just switch off too often, the signs were there last week.

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders affiliate Mounties suffer first defeat of the season

The Panthers have overcome a mounting injury toll and sin bin to stun the ladder-leading Mounties 30-22 at Aubrey Keech Reserve. Kaide Ellis, Hame Sele, Jarome Luai and Tyrell Fuimaono were late scratchings with all four expected to play NRL next week. Shawn Blore (ankle), Spencer Leniu (knee) and Daine Laurie (concussion) were also ruled out.

Some lucky bounces for the Panthers but some soft tries in the final stages. No doubt the players were weary, but there wasn't much urgency.

Preview

Last week: The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties suffered their first loss of the season in their last outing - a 30-22 loss to the Penrith Panthers at Aubrey Keech Reserve in Round 8.

It was a match Mounties should have won - given the significant late disruptions to the Panthers' line up. The Panthers withdrew Kaide Ellis, Hame Sele, Jarome Luai and Tyrell Fuimaono, given their injury woes at NRL level - while Shawn Blore, Spencer Leniu and Daine Laurie were all ruled out with injury. But Penrith just seems to be one of the Mounties' "bogey" teams.

Mounties led 16-12 at half time, and extended their lead to ten points in the 45th minute when Tom Starling put Reuben Porter over the line. Panther Matheson Johns was sent to the sin bin in the 56th minute, but Mounties failed to take advantage. Penrith scored the final three tries of the match, taking the lead with 12 minutes remaining. Billy Burns scored his second try of the match with eight minutes remaining to wrap it up.

Emre Guler (eight runs for 91 metres, 28 post contact metres, one line break, three tackle breaks, 36 tackles, 97 per cent tackle efficiency) and Tom Starling (12 runs for 100 metres, one line break, one line break assist, one try assist, 86 metres from 10 dummy half runs, 10 dummies, 37 tackles, 97 per cent tackle efficiency) were amongst the best for Mounties.

Jack Murchie (38), Starling (37) and Guler (36) topped the tackle count for Mounties. Reubenn Rennie (149), JJ Collins (123) and Anthony Laoun (106) topped the metres gained.

This week: Mounties still sit atop the NSW Cup ladder, with the Panthers biting at their heels. They now face the fourth placed South Sydney Rabbitohs on Saturday afternoon in "Magic Round" at Panthers Stadium. The Rabbitohs have suffered two, two point losses in a row. In Round 7, they lost to the Panthers, 20-18, at Panthers Stadium - and they then lost to the Newtown Jets at Henson, 26-24. The Rabbitohs have won five and lost three matches this season. Mounties have won six, drawn one, and lost one.

Mounties are the top attacking and third best defensive team in the competition. They have averaged 34 points per match (Rabbitohs 22) and conceded an average 19 points per match (Rabbitohs 20). Mounties have conceded a total of just four more points than the best defensive outfit (the Bears) and two more than the second best (the Panthers).

Form: Mounties: WWWWL
South Sydney Rabbitohs: WWWLL

Mounties team changes: Mounties have a host of team changes this week. There is a bye in the Jersey Flegg competition this week, and a number of Canberra Raiders Flegg players are being given an opportunity in the higher grade. Brad Abbey comes back from injury, replacing Anthony Layoun in the No. 1 jersey. Seb Kris has been named for his NRL debut with the Raiders, and Flegg player Harley Smith Shields comes into his vacant centre spot. Vincent Rennie comes in at starting prop, in place of Royce Hunt, with Hunt named on the extended bench for the Raiders. Jack Murchie is under an injury cloud (arm/wrist/hand), but has also been named on the Raiders' extended bench. Steve Tavita comes in at lock, with Jarrett Boland moving into Murchie's second row position. Flegg hooker Kyle Patterson and lock Darby Medlyn have been included on the bench. JJ Collins, suffered concussion in the NSW Residents loss to Queensland Residents last Sunday, and he has dropped out of the squad. Ryan King and Flegg forward Duwanye Mariner have been named on the extended bench.

Our tip: It is very difficult to tip a winner in this one, given the significant team changes for Mounties. Regardless, first versus fourth should be a good clash, and it'll be interesting to see how some of the Raiders Flegg players perform. Given the form lines, we'll go with a win for the men in black and yellow.

Why is this game being played at Panthers and not a curtain raiser in Canberra?

It is "Magic Round" in NSW Cup, as explained in the just updated preview. Which is sort of ridiculous, frankly. It would make much more sense to have it played the game at Canberra Stadium. "Magic Round" in NSW Cup is staged at Panthers Stadium on Saturday and Henson Park on Sunday.

Yes, it is. I mean it is not like many thousands more people pour into these grounds for NSW Cup on a "Magic Round". The usual supporters who travel, travel, and the home team fans, come for the home team. Hardly any one is going to sit there all day watching all the matches... because they've been desperate to see three NSW Cup matches in a row. It is ridiculous.

MATCH REPORT: Mounties' second half defensive effort enough to repel South Sydney Rabbitohs

Mounties’ classy spine of Aiden Sezer, Ata Hingano and Tom Starling have chosen Magic Round to produce some tricks of their own and ensure their side didn’t feel the ill effects of the early loss of fullback Brad Abbey to injury, with a solid 32-18 win over South Sydney at Panthers Stadium.
